Campgrounds near Pettit, Oklahoma
Pettit sits in the wooded Cookson Hills of northeastern Oklahoma, on the western shore of Lake Tenkiller in Cherokee County. Tenkiller Ferry Lake is often referred to as Oklahoma's clear water paradise, drawing RV travelers for boating, swimming, scuba diving, and bass fishing on more than 130 miles of shoreline.
The area mixes U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks with state-managed and privately operated campgrounds, so RV renters can pick between full-hookup resorts and simpler lakeside sites. Cedar Creek Campgrounds & Storage and Tenkiller Skies sit close to Pettit itself, while Cherokee Landing State Park occupies a peninsula on the north end of the lake. Cookson Bend Resort and Marina and Sixshooter Marina & Cabins are on the eastern shore and put anglers within reach of deeper coves.
The region is part of Green Country, northeastern Oklahoma's area of dense oak-hickory forests, tall bluffs, and rolling hills, and the Cherokee Nation capital of Tahlequah is a short drive north for supplies, groceries, and dump-station stops.
Things to do around Pettit
Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Tenkiller is known for clear water and is a popular spot for freshwater scuba diving, swimming, and other water sports. Anglers target bass, crappie, and catfish, and coves near Cookson Bend Resort and Marina and Sixshooter Marina & Cabins are established fishing spots on the east side of the lake.
On shore, Cherokee Landing State Park offers hiking on the Red Fox trail, a 9-hole disc golf course, and an outdoor volleyball court. The park has a swimming beach on Lake Tenkiller, a playground, and a softball field, making it a workable base for families with kids.
Tahlequah adds Illinois River float trips, Cherokee Nation cultural sites, and restaurants within a half-hour drive of most Pettit-area campgrounds.

Late spring through early fall is peak RV season on Lake Tenkiller. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book heaviest, and lakeside sites at Cherokee Landing State Park and nearby Corps of Engineers areas fill weeks in advance. Wildflowers and migratory birds arrive in spring, and the park is known for spring wildflowers, great birding, and even migratory cranes.
Summer brings hot, humid days and warm lake water, ideal for swimming and tubing but hard on pets left in rigs. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and lake levels can rise quickly after heavy rain. The south end of Cherokee Landing can be subject to flooding during high water events, so RV camping is relegated to the north end of the park.
Fall brings cooler nights, clearer skies, and lighter crowds through October. Cherokee Landing State Park operates year-round, though some private marinas and resorts scale back services once boating season winds down.
How to book near Pettit
Oklahoma State Parks handles Cherokee Landing State Park reservations through its ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so mark the calendar for holiday weekends the moment the window opens.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Tenkiller Ferry Lake, including Pettit Bay and Cookson Bend, are booked through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window. Private options such as Tenkiller Skies, Cedar Creek Campgrounds & Storage, Cookson Bend Resort and Marina, and Sixshooter Marina & Cabins take bookings directly by phone or through their own websites, and policies on deposits, minimum stays, and pets vary by property.
Cherokee Landing RV sites include water and electric, but some pads need longer hoses to reach the water spigot. Confirm hookup specifics before arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the Pettit area are paved but narrow in spots, with wooded shoulders and some steep grades near the lake. Cell service is generally solid near Tahlequah and thins out inside the state park loops and along coves on the east shore.
Most lakeside state and Corps sites offer electric and water but not sewer at the pad, with a central dump station on the way out. Cherokee Landing has RV sites that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet long, with electric and water hookups, a dump station, and bathhouses with hot showers.
Expect uneven pads at older loops, mosquitoes near the water at dusk, and busy boat ramps on summer weekends. Bring leveling blocks, bug spray, and enough fresh-water hose to reach hydrants set back from the pad.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pettit, OK
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pettit, OK?
RV rental in Pettit is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy Lake Tenkiller. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, campervans land in the $130 to $200 range, and Class C motorhomes are usually $175 to $275 per night. Because hosts on RVezy set their own pricing, you can filter by price range and sort by lowest cost to find a cheap RV rental in Pettit that still has everything you need. Weekday bookings in May or September often cost noticeably less than peak summer weekends, so shifting your trip even one day can stretch your budget further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pettit%2C%20OklahomaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Pettit, Oklahoma?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pettit. Oklahoma specifically exempts recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements when used for personal travel, regardless of weight, so even a big Class A motorhome is fair game with a standard license. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple this part is.
oklahoma.gov/service/all-pages/cdl-first-time-applicants.htmlIs the RV protected if something goes wrong on my trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Pettit with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your rental, and you choose your level of coverage during checkout (you pick this, not the host). That matters here because the backroads around Tenkiller and the Cookson Hills include some gravel approaches to coves and marinas, and knowing you are covered for the unexpected lets you focus on the scenery. Pick the plan that feels right when you book, and you are good to go.

If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides credits so your trip plans stay protected. Specific timelines depend on how far out your trip is, and full details live in the RVezy Help Center. Go ahead and lock in the dates you want for your RV rental in Pettit; you can review the policy details before you confirm.

They will also walk you through the systems, hook up power and water, and answer your questions before leaving. Check the mileage policy on each listing before you book, and if you are planning a longer loop, message the host to arrange extra miles up front.

Spring days are typically a comfortable 65 to 80 degrees with the Illinois River at prime float levels, while fall brings crisp 70-degree afternoons and gorgeous Cookson Hills color. July and August get hot and humid with highs commonly in the 90s, but Tenkiller's clear water makes it a perfect summer escape if you book a shaded, electric site for nighttime air conditioning. Winters are mild (often 40s to 50s by day) and many campgrounds stay open year-round, making this one of Oklahoma's best off-season RV destinations.
weather.gov/tsa/I have never rented an RV before. Will I know what to do?
You will be in great shape. First time renting an RV in Pettit is genuinely easy because every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how the slide-outs, water systems, generator, and propane all work. Many also send a written cheat sheet or short video to your phone afterward. If you would rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup, and your campervan rental in Pettit will be waiting at the campground with everything running. You can also message the host before booking with any questions; most reply quickly and love helping new renters feel confident.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire on Highway 82, a dead battery at Pettit Bay, or a mechanical issue on a backroad in the Cookson Hills. Your host is also a direct resource through the RVezy app, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before pickup and you can relax knowing the whole trip is covered end to end.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pettit RV rental across state lines into Arkansas or Missouri?
Yes, interstate travel from Pettit is one of the best parts of basing here. Most RVezy hosts allow trips into Arkansas (Bentonville and Eureka Springs are about 90 to 110 miles east), Missouri (Branson is roughly 200 miles north), Texas, and Kansas, since RVezy insurance coverage applies across the continental US. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Confirm your route with the host when you message them, mention any major destinations like the Ozarks or the Buffalo National River, and they can confirm the plan before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Pettit RV trip is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get around 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically lands at 9 to 13 MPG. Oklahoma consistently has some of the cheapest gas in the country, often 30 to 50 cents per gallon below the national average. The closest fill-ups to Pettit are in Tahlequah and Park Hill on Highway 82. Pro tip: top off in Tahlequah before heading deeper into Tenkiller's coves, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pettit?
For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends at Pettit Bay or Tenkiller State Park, book six months out the moment the window opens. Corps of Engineers sites on Recreation.gov open reservations six months ahead, and Oklahoma State Parks via ReserveAmerica allow bookings up to 11 months in advance with a 1-day minimum lead time. For shoulder-season weekdays, two to three weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: waterfront sites in Pettit Bay II (the full-hookup loop) are the first to vanish, so set a calendar reminder for the day reservations open and grab yours before lunch.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233581What are the local driving conditions like around Pettit?
Driving in Pettit is generally relaxed: rural two-lane highways, light traffic, and friendly rolling terrain through the Cookson Hills. Highway 82 and Highway 10 are the main arteries and handle big RVs comfortably. A few things to know specifically for this area: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a long-term bridge replacement over Tenkiller Dam in October 2025, so plan an alternate route via Highway 82 or Highway 100 if you are circling the lake. Watch for deer at dusk along Indian Road, and take it slow on the winding final mile of West Pettit Bay Road. Otherwise, easy cruising.
swt.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Tenkiller-Bridge-Project/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Pettit?
You will be well taken care of. Pettit Bay Campground offers flush toilets, hot showers, water hydrants, a dump station, swim beach, playground, boat ramps, and an adjacent marina with concessions, with some Pettit Bay II sites offering full water, electric, and sewer hookups. Tenkiller State Park adds a seasonal swimming pool with waterslide, the Driftwood Nature Center, and Pine Cove Marina. Fresh water fills and dump stations are available at most Corps campgrounds, and Echota Village RV Park in Tahlequah has full hookups plus laundry and Wi-Fi. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose, since spigot placement varies site to site.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233581What features and amenities come with the RV itself?
Pettit RV rentals come loaded for comfort. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class C and travel trailer rentals), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, dining seating, and proper seatbelts for travel. Many hosts include a generator (great for boondocking on hot Oklahoma afternoons), an outdoor awning, a TV, and Bluetooth speakers. Wi-Fi hotspots and solar panels are common upgrades. Each listing spells out exactly what is included, and you can message the host to confirm specifics like a coffee maker or pack-and-play before your family RV trip in Pettit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pettit%2C%20OklahomaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in the Pettit area offer some genuinely useful add-ons: delivery and setup, camping packages with chairs, linens, and kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, and propane fills. Pricing varies by host and distance, and each add-on is shown on the listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Tahlequah, Park Hill, or Cookson, with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary, so check whether your listing offers RV rental with unlimited mileage or a per-mile overage rate. If you are heading straight to Pettit Bay, ask about delivery; it often saves time and fuel compared to towing yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pettit%2C%20OklahomaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book (never cash to the host), and the security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged. The deposit is released after your trip wraps up assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any hiccups on your RV rental in Oklahoma, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, refill propane and fuel to the starting level, and empty the tanks at the campground dump station before returning. Easy steps, smooth checkout.
