Campgrounds and RV parks near Redbird Smith, OK

Lake Tenkiller is the main draw. Boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking, and swimming are common, and Lake Tenkiller is considered one of the best places in the state for scuba diving, as its waters are clear from eight to 28 feet. Tenkiller Scuba Park is a diver's dream, with a sunken airplane fuselage, school bus, helicopter and two boats to explore underwater. Anglers pursue largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, and white bass, plus crappie, catfish, and walleye. Paddlers can float the Illinois River upstream of the lake, and rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the Illinois River below the dam. An outdoor swimming pool is available seasonally at the park and includes a water slide and splash pad, and the Tenkiller Multi-Use Trail is a handicap accessible paved trail 1.5 miles in length, suitable for kids and strollers.

Peak season runs late spring through Labor Day, when lake temperatures are warm enough for swimming and every marina, beach, and pool is operating. Reserve state park sites well ahead for holiday weekends, since Tenkiller is one of the most popular water destinations in eastern Oklahoma. Heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can sometimes occur during the warmer months, so scheduling water time earlier in the day helps. Spring brings frequent rain and the best fishing for bass and crappie, but campers should watch river levels on the Illinois and Baron Fork before booking riverside sites. Fall is often the most comfortable window: cooler nights, thinner crowds, and steady lake levels, with fishing still productive. Winter camping is possible but limited, and some private parks reduce services. Travelers should also note that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun a long-term bridge replacement project affecting the route across Tenkiller Dam, and recommended alternate routes are posted on the Corps' Tenkiller Bridge Project page, which may affect the usual route to some campgrounds.

Expect wooded lakeside sites on rolling terrain, with a mix of paved and gravel roads. Lake Tenkiller State Park offers numerous campsites with a mix of RV and tent camping facilities, including sites with full hookups (electric, water, and sewer), partial hookups (electric and water), and basic tent sites without hookups. Amenities typically include boat ramps, courtesy docks, picnic areas, a swimming beach, playgrounds, hiking trails, and restrooms with showers. Cell service is inconsistent in the surrounding hills. Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in Vian and Gore, both a short drive from most campgrounds. Bugs are active spring through fall, so bring repellent, and pack layers for cool evenings even in shoulder-season months.
