Campgrounds near Crooked River Ranch
Crooked River Ranch sits on a high-desert plateau in central Oregon, ringed by the canyons of the Crooked and Deschutes rivers and within easy reach of Smith Rock State Park, Lake Billy Chinook, and the city of Bend. RV travelers use the area as a base for canyon hiking, paddling, rock climbing, and reservoir watersports.
Private options closest to the ranch include Stone Ledge RV Park and Copper Ridge RV Resort, which offer full-hookup sites for travelers who want utilities and predictable amenities. Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday sits south toward Redmond and works well for families wanting pools, playgrounds, and KOA-system booking.
For state-park camping, The Cove Palisades State Park spans the Deschutes and Crooked River canyons and is a popular year-round destination for camping, watersports, and hiking. Its two campgrounds, Deschutes Campground - Cove Palisades State Park and Crooked River Camp - Cove Palisades State Park, sit on opposite sides of Lake Billy Chinook and operate on different seasonal schedules.
Things to do near Crooked River Ranch
Lake Billy Chinook is the main draw, with boating, swimming areas near the campgrounds, and rental boats available at the Cove Palisades Resort and Marina. Anglers most often fish for kokanee salmon, largemouth bass, and rainbow and brown trout.
Hikers have several options inside The Cove Palisades. The Crooked River Rim Trail runs about two miles from the Crooked River Campground and offers views of the Cascades, the reservoir, and The Island, a 200-acre landform that serves as raptor habitat. The Tam-a-láu Trail climbs roughly 600 feet from the Deschutes Campground for views of the snow-capped Cascade Range and both river canyons.
Off-water, Smith Rock State Park is a short drive south for world-class rock climbing and canyon hiking, and the town of Madras lies about 10 miles north of the park for groceries and fuel.

Seasons in this part of central Oregon are sharply defined. Weekdays in late May or early September are good alternatives for warm weather without the heaviest crowds.
Within the park, the two campgrounds run on different calendars. Crooked River Campground (E-loop) has a partial loop open in winter and the whole loop open March through October, while Deschutes Campground (loops A, B, C) and the moorage slips open mid-May through mid-September.
Summer brings heat, dry conditions, and elevated wildfire risk. Fire restrictions are common in the hot, dry months, and in times of extreme danger portable cooking devices that run on fuel or propane may also be limited. Spring and fall are quieter, with cooler nights and flat-water paddling conditions on the reservoir arms.
