Campgrounds near Drain, Oregon
Drain sits in Douglas County at the crossroads of Oregon Route 99 and Oregon Route 38, in a pass through the Coast Range on the route west to the Pacific. Elk Creek and Pass Creek, both tributaries of the Umpqua River, converge in town, and Highway 38 follows the main Umpqua downstream toward Elkton, Scottsburg and Reedsport. The location makes Drain a practical RV base for trips into the Umpqua Valley, the south-central Oregon Coast, and Interstate 5 travel between Eugene and Roseburg.
RV options cluster along the I-5 corridor and the lower Umpqua. Rice Hill RV Park LLC and Sutherlin/Umpqua Valley KOA Holiday sit just off the freeway for easy in-and-out stays, Timber Valley Park serves longer-stay travelers in the Sutherlin area, and Elkton RV Park and Sawyers Rapids RV Resort put visitors closer to the Umpqua River itself, downstream from Drain on Highway 38.
Most commercial parks in the area book directly through the property; nearby state, county and federal campgrounds use separate reservation systems described below.
Things to do near Drain
The Umpqua River is the main draw. The stretch from Roseburg to Elkton is considered the area's prime water for smallmouth bass and shad, with bass fishing strongest from May into September and shad running April through mid-June. Steelhead can be targeted year-round on the main Umpqua, with spring Chinook from March through mid-June and a fall Chinook run that begins in mid to late July and tapers in November.
Highway 38 is also a working scenic route to the coast at Reedsport and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Closer to town, the Pass Creek covered bridge sits in a park behind the Drain Civic Center, and county fishing access points and boat ramps along the lower Umpqua provide bank and boat-launch options within a short drive.

Drain has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and chilly, wet winters. Summers are short, warm, dry and mostly clear, with August the warmest month and skies clear roughly 82 percent of the time. June through September is the prime stretch for RV travel: dry pavement, reliable river access, and the best window for smallmouth bass and fall Chinook on the Umpqua.
Spring is cool and showery but workable, and it lines up with spring Chinook, shad, and rising flows on the North Umpqua, where late spring and early summer are considered strong months for paddling. Fall stays mild into October before the rains return in force.
Winter is the wet season. December is typically the wettest and coldest month, with heavy rainfall, short daylight, and occasional cold snaps. Snow is rare in town, but Coast Range and Cascade passes can see winter weather, and river levels run high. Many seasonal campgrounds on federal and state land close or run on reduced services from late fall through early spring.

We had never done trailer camping. Nancy and Scott are incredibly helpful and understanding. They spent lots of time walking us through all the ins and outs of their trailer. The trailer itself was very clean and well equipped. Nancy had thought of just about everything. Oh yes, and the bed was very comfortable. We had a great time and would only recommend this rental.

Booking and reservations
Private RV parks around Drain, including Rice Hill RV Park LLC, Elkton RV Park, Sutherlin/Umpqua Valley KOA Holiday, Timber Valley Park and Sawyers Rapids RV Resort, are booked directly with each property. Call ahead in summer; riverfront sites and pull-throughs near I-5 fill earliest for weekends and holidays.
Oregon State Parks campgrounds in the broader region use a single reservation system. New reservations are accepted from the same day as arrival through six months in advance, with new dates released online at 6 a.m. Pacific. Reservations are required for yurts and cabins, and some campgrounds remain first-come, first-served.
U.S. Forest Service and many BLM sites in the Umpqua basin are booked through Recreation.gov, also on a six-month rolling window. Confirm seasonal opening dates before traveling; some forest campgrounds stay closed into late spring due to snow or storm damage.
What to expect
Expect a rural, small-town base. Drain itself is compact, with basic services along Highway 99 and Highway 38; larger grocery, fuel and big-box stops are in Sutherlin, Roseburg and Cottage Grove. Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-5 and in town but can drop in the canyons of the Coast Range and along Highway 38 west of Elkton.
Roads west to the coast are two-lane, winding and shared with log trucks. Plan for slower travel times with a trailer or motorhome, and fuel up before heading down Highway 38 toward Reedsport.
Summer brings wildfire risk across southern Oregon. Check current fire restrictions and air-quality conditions before lighting campfires, and confirm with each campground whether fires, generators and pets are allowed. River access points often charge a day-use or parking fee.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Drain, OR
How much does an RV rental in Drain, OR typically cost?
An RV rental in Drain is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Umpqua Valley, with most peer-to-peer rentals on RVezy ranging from about $95 to $175 per night for travel trailers and $150 to $275 per night for Class C motorhomes. Pricing depends on size, age, and season. To find a cheap RV rental Drain travelers love, book on weekdays, target shoulder seasons like late April or October, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Because Drain sits on Highway 38 between I-5 and the coast, many local hosts include generous mileage to encourage road trips toward Reedsport and the Oregon Dunes. Message a host directly through the listing for a custom quote on longer stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Drain%2C%20OregonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Drain, Oregon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Drain. Oregon does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy you'll typically need to be at least 25, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country driver's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the verification step is, usually just a few minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Drain, OR RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Drain booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 38 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the vehicle during your trip, which is reassuring whether you're navigating the windy stretch toward Elkton or pulling into a tight site at Umpqua's Last Resort. At booking you can choose from multiple protection tiers, with higher tiers offering lower deductibles. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's purpose-built for RV rentals and removes most of the financial worry from your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Drain RV trip?
Booking your Drain RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy across the platform. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and the refund amount after that depends on how many days remain before your trip and whether extenuating circumstances apply. Southern Oregon does see occasional summer wildfire smoke and winter ice events on I-5, so book early and review the current cancellation terms at checkout. If plans change, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip to walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Drain?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Drain options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see local hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Drain is a fantastic basecamp for dog owners because nearby trails along the North Umpqua River, Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park outside Oakland, and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area near Reedsport all allow leashed pets. Most state-managed campgrounds in Douglas County require pets to stay on a six-foot leash and never be left unattended at the site. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy paws since winter and spring trails in the Coast Range can get soggy.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=things-to-do.dogsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Drain?
Yes, RV delivery in Drain is one of the most popular options on RVezy and it's perfect if you're new to RVing or want to skip the driving. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer at nearby spots like Pass Creek County Park in Drain, Elkton Community Education Center RV sites, or Umpqua's Last Resort along the North Umpqua. On the listing page, filter by Delivery to see who offers it. Hosts typically charge a per-mile delivery fee from their home base, then handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough on arrival. You just show up and start the campfire, making it the easiest way to enjoy a first time renting an RV.

Confirm mileage on the listing before booking so you can plan freely.
tripcheck.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Drain, OR?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to where to park an RV near Drain. Pass Creek County Park sits at the north edge of town with shaded sites, electric hookups, and a stocked fishing pond, making it the most convenient option. About 20 miles west on Highway 38, Elkton RV Park puts you on the Umpqua River with full hookups and easy wine country access. Umpqua's Last Resort, roughly an hour east, offers 50-amp full-hookup sites deep in the Umpqua National Forest. For coastal vibes, Loon Lake Recreation Site (about 45 minutes southwest) is run by the BLM and stunning. Book Oregon State Parks like Jessie M. Honeyman up to six months ahead through the official reservation system.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.findWhen is the best time to visit Drain in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Drain is late May through early October, when the Umpqua Valley shows off its warm, dry summers. July and August bring sunny days with highs around 80°F and cool nights in the high 40s, perfect for campfires. September is a local favorite because crowds thin out, wineries kick into harvest mode, and steelhead fishing on the North Umpqua peaks. Winters are mild but wet (highs near 49°F and roughly 40 to 48 inches of annual rain), so a cozy motorhome rental in Drain in February with a good furnace can be a peaceful, budget-friendly escape. Snow is rare in town.
weather.gov/mfr/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Drain?
First time renting an RV in Drain? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water system, generator, propane, and dump valves, and they're a text message away during your whole trip. Drain is a small, quiet town, so you get a calm, low-traffic environment to practice driving before heading out to Highway 138 or I-5. Many hosts include a printed cheat sheet. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, book delivery and the host will set up the rig at your campsite. Plus 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have a breakdown or flat tire during my trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Drain booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is a phone call away whether you're parked at Pass Creek, climbing toward Diamond Lake on Highway 138, or on the coastal stretch near Reedsport. Roadside covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. The Douglas County area has solid cell coverage along I-5 and Highway 38, though signal can drop in the upper Umpqua canyon, so download offline maps before heading into the Cascades. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick mechanical questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/4406703972763-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Drain rental on a cross-state or cross-border road trip?
Yes, Drain is a launchpad for some of the West Coast's best routes. Heading south on I-5 you can reach the California Redwoods in about 3.5 hours, and many RVezy hosts allow travel into California, Washington, Idaho, and Nevada (always confirm the host's travel area on the listing). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts depending on insurance, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular routes from Drain include the Pacific Coast Highway loop via Reedsport, the Crater Lake and Bend circuit, and the Redwoods to Mount Shasta drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Drain RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, but it's easy to plan for. Most travel trailers towed by a midsize truck get around 10 to 14 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 9 mpg. Oregon gas prices typically run a bit above the national average. A 300-mile loop from Drain to Crater Lake and back in a Class C might use roughly 30 to 35 gallons. Fuel up in Sutherlin or Roseburg on I-5 where prices are usually lower than coastal Reedsport. Oregon also allows self-service fueling statewide.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Drain?
For the best campgrounds near Drain in peak season (June through Labor Day), aim to book six months in advance, which is the maximum window allowed at most Oregon State Parks. Reservations open on a rolling six-month basis through the official Oregon State Parks reservation system. Nearby Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, and William M. Tugman State Park all fill fast for summer weekends. Douglas County parks like Pass Creek and Whistler's Bend usually have more last-minute availability. Midweek arrivals (Sunday through Tuesday) are dramatically easier to score, and same-day online reservations are available statewide if your plans shift.
oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Drain?
Driving around Drain is refreshingly easy by Pacific Northwest standards. I-5 runs north-south just minutes from town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Highway 38 west toward the coast is a scenic, low-traffic two-lane road following the Umpqua River. The main things to watch are summer wildfire smoke (check air quality before mountain travel), occasional black ice on winter mornings, and elk crossings at dawn and dusk along Highway 38. If you're heading east on Highway 138 toward Crater Lake, expect winding sections and a steady climb, so take it slow. Real-time conditions and chain requirements are posted on Oregon DOT's TripCheck site, which is a must-bookmark before any campervan rental Drain trip.
tripcheck.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Drain?
Campgrounds near Drain offer a satisfying range of amenities. Full-hookup parks like Elkton RV Park and Umpqua's Last Resort provide 20/30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, and often Wi-Fi. Oregon State Parks in the region typically have electric and water hookups plus shared dump stations, flush toilets, and hot showers. Public dump stations are easy to find in Sutherlin, Roseburg, and Reedsport. Potable water fill-ups are available at most parks and many service stations along I-5. The BLM-run Loon Lake Recreation Site offers a more rustic experience with vault toilets and no hookups, ideal if your rental has a generator. Always confirm hookup amps on the listing so you can match your rig.
blm.gov/visit/loon-lake-recreation-siteWhat's typically included inside an RV rental from Drain?
Most RV rentals in Drain come trip-ready with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, basic cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating that often converts to extra sleeping space, roof-mounted air conditioning, and a propane furnace for cool Umpqua Valley nights. Class C motorhomes and larger trailers usually sleep 4 to 8, making them great for a family RV trip from Drain. Many hosts include a generator (handy for boondocking near Loon Lake), outdoor chairs, a TV, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Listings spell out exactly what's included, and you can message the host to add bedding, kitchen kits, or BBQ grills before your trip.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options are available when I rent an RV in Drain?
When you rent an RV in Drain, you can customize your trip with add-ons set by each host. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor patio mats, portable generators, bike racks, kayaks, propane refills, and Starlink Wi-Fi for off-grid adventures. Pickup is typically at the host's home base in or around Drain, Yoncalla, Sutherlin, or Roseburg, with delivery available for an additional per-mile fee. Mileage allowances commonly range from 100 to 250 miles per day, and some longer bookings come with unlimited miles. Ask about a generator if you're heading to Loon Lake or boondocking spots in the Umpqua National Forest where hookups aren't available.
fs.usda.gov/umpquaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is handled securely inside the RVezy platform, with no cash exchanges with the host at pickup. You'll pay for the rental, protection plan, and any add-ons at checkout with a credit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip; the exact amount is shown on each listing and depends on the RV and the protection tier you choose. Assuming the RV is returned in the same condition with the agreed fuel and mileage, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid surprises, dump the tanks before return, refuel as required, and take photos at pickup and dropoff.
