Camping near Huntington, Oregon
Huntington sits along the Snake River in Baker County on Oregon's eastern border, just off Interstate 84 near the Idaho line. The area's high-desert setting on Brownlee Reservoir gives RV travelers easy reservoir access, open skies, and quick connections to the broader Oregon Trail corridor along U.S. Route 30.
The closest established campground is Farewell Bend State Park, an Oregon State Parks property on the reservoir. Farewell Bend State Recreation Area features a desert experience on the banks of the Snake River's Brownlee Reservoir, with historic markers and interpretive displays on its significance on the Oregon Trail, and RV and tent campsites that serve as base camps for the Snake River Water Trail and other regional attractions. Private options nearby include Oasis on the Snake, a riverside RV park with hookups, and Monroe Creek Campground and RV Park closer to Baker City.
For budget overnighters or event-driven stays, Malheur County Fairgrounds in Ontario and River Point RV Park round out the local choices, giving travelers several styles of site within a short drive of Huntington.
Things to do near Huntington
Brownlee Reservoir is the main draw. Brownlee Reservoir offers fishing, water skiing and boating. Farewell Bend State Park has a paved boat ramp, fish-cleaning station, and viewing deck, plus horseshoe pits, a sand volleyball court, and a basketball court for downtime at camp. Visitors may see wildlife including deer, pronghorn, geese, eagles, chukars, and quail.
History is built into the landscape. After following the Snake River for 330 miles, Oregon Trail pioneers rested above the bend in the river here, then bid farewell to the Snake River and continued their trek. The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center on Flagstaff Hill just east of Baker City is no more than an hour's drive away.
River-based recreation continues at Oasis on the Snake, where guests fish for catfish and other warm-water species and launch small boats from a private ramp.

When to visit Huntington

March - May
58° / 39°F 42 mmWettest months; reservations open nine months out

June - August
84° / 57°F 15 mmHot and dry; mosquitoes peak; fire restrictions common

December - February
35° / 23°F 28 mmCold nights; state-park water shut off October to April
The prime camping window runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Evening interpretive programs are periodically presented from Memorial Day through Labor Day at Farewell Bend, and the reservoir sees heavy use through those summer months. Days warm quickly in May, and weekends fill steadily into July and August.
Summer is hot and dry. Highs commonly climb into the upper 80s and low 90s, and bug pressure rises near the water. Mosquito populations can be high during the summer. When visiting mid-to-late summer the grass and trees at the park may start to go dormant to protect themselves from the heat, so visitors may see brown grass and leafless trees. Campfire restrictions may be in place during the summer; check ahead.
Shoulder seasons are quieter and cooler, with better site availability. The park is open for day-use year-round, and camping continues into winter with reduced services. Water is shut off to sites October through April, though showers remain available. Reservoir levels also fluctuate through the year based on Idaho Power operations.
How to book campgrounds near Huntington
Farewell Bend State Park is reserved through the Oregon State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made 24 hours a day, from 1 day to 9 months in advance. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill first; book early or watch for cancellations as the trip approaches. The A Loop is first-come, first-served, while B and C Loops are reservable, and all sites switch to reservations in summer.
Private parks use their own platforms. Oasis on the Snake takes reservations online through Campspot or by phone, and other private parks in the corridor accept direct phone bookings. The park offers 44 RV spaces with full and partial hookups available.
Renters should confirm rig length, slide-out clearance, and hookup type at booking. Only one RV is permitted per site at the state park, and extra vehicles must be registered in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a high-desert riverside setting: sagebrush, open sun, and basalt hills above the reservoir. Shade is limited at most sites, so awnings and reflective shades earn their keep in summer. Late-summer grass and trees can look brown at Farewell Bend as vegetation goes dormant in the heat.
Mosquitoes can be intense near standing water in early summer, and gnats appear in late summer along the river. Pack repellent and screen tents for tent campers in the group.
Fireworks are prohibited. Propane barbecues are allowed within designated areas, but only for cooking purposes; other open flames including charcoal briquettes, candles, tiki torches, and devices that emit flames or embers without a shut-off valve are not allowed. Cell coverage is generally workable along the I-84 corridor but drops in side canyons.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Huntington, OR
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Huntington, OR?
An RV rental in Huntington is one of the most affordable ways to explore eastern Oregon's high desert and the Snake River corridor. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, campervans around $150 to $225, and Class C motorhomes between $200 and $325 per night, with hosts setting their own rates. Shoulder-season trips in April, May, and September often unlock the cheapest RV rental Huntington has on offer, since summer Hells Canyon traffic drives prices up. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and stay 5+ nights, many hosts in Baker County offer weekly discounts of 10-20%.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20OregonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Huntington, OR?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Huntington. Oregon does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, and toy haulers you'll find on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's nothing to print or bring. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before flying in. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple Oregon's rules really are.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Huntington?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Huntington includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Interstate 84 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. Roadside assistance covers tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and towing, which is reassuring when you're crossing the remote stretch between Ontario and Baker City. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking, the upgraded plan is popular for families heading into Hells Canyon where cell service gets spotty.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Huntington RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not the individual host, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Beyond that window, refunds depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. You'll see the full policy details at checkout before you confirm. Pro tip: book early for July Hells Canyon trips, then use that grace period to confirm campground reservations before your cancellation window closes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Huntington, OR?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Huntington options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings where dogs are welcomed by the host. Eastern Oregon is a dream for dog owners: Farewell Bend State Recreation Area (just 4 miles north of Huntington) allows leashed pets on all trails and the Snake River beach, and the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center near Baker City has a paved pet loop. Most hosts ask for a small pet fee ($25-$75 per stay) to cover cleaning. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, it speeds up approval and often gets you tips on the nearest dog-friendly swimming spots along the Snake.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=14Can the RV be delivered to my campground near Huntington?
Yes, RV delivery in Huntington is offered by many RVezy hosts in the Baker County and Treasure Valley area, which is perfect if you're flying into Boise (about 75 miles southeast) or you'd rather skip driving a big rig your first time. Your host will tow or drive the motorhome to your campsite at Farewell Bend State Park, Catherine Creek, or a private property along the Snake River, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every switch and valve. Delivery fees are typically $2-$4 per mile round-trip. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery, then message the host with your campsite number, many waive part of the fee for stays of a week or more.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=14How far can I drive on an RV rental from Huntington, OR?

Popular drives include Boise, ID (75 miles), Hells Canyon Overlook (90 miles), Baker City and the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (45 miles), Wallowa Lake (140 miles), and Bend, OR (260 miles). Extra miles usually run $0.30-$0.45 each. Pro tip: if you're looping through La Grande and Joseph, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front, it almost always pays off on multi-stop routes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%2C%20OregonWhat are the best campgrounds near Huntington, OR?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Huntington include Farewell Bend State Recreation Area (4 miles north, 91 full and partial hookup sites right on the Snake River reservoir), Catherine Creek State Park near Union (great for trout fishing, 18 primitive sites), Hells Canyon Park Campground on the Idaho side of Brownlee Reservoir (full hookups, boat ramp), Lake Owyhee State Park (about 90 miles south, stunning red-rock canyon), and Anthony Lakes Campground in the Elkhorn Mountains for cooler summer nights. Pro tip: Farewell Bend's loop A fills up fast on summer weekends, book through Oregon State Parks Reservations up to six months ahead.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=14When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Huntington, OR?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Huntington, with the sweet spot in May, June, and September. Huntington sits in eastern Oregon's high desert at about 2,100 feet, so summers are hot (highs of 90-100°F in July and August), spring and fall are sunny and mild (60s-80s), and winters bring freezing nights with occasional snow on Interstate 84 over the Blue Mountains. May wildflowers along the Snake River and September's golden cottonwoods are unbeatable. Pro tip: aim for shoulder season if you want cheaper rentals and cooler driving, you'll have Farewell Bend's beach almost to yourself in mid-September.
weather.gov/boi/I've never rented an RV before. Is Huntington a good place to start?
Huntington is honestly one of the friendliest first time renting an RV destinations in Oregon. Traffic is light, campgrounds are close (Farewell Bend is a 6-minute drive), and Interstate 84 is a wide, well-maintained freeway with gentle grades around town. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, the water system, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip. Many hosts also deliver and set up the RV so you never have to back into a site. Pro tip: book a 2-night shakedown at Farewell Bend first, you'll be a confident driver before tackling the road to Hells Canyon.
oregon.gov/odot/Safety/Pages/index.aspxWhat if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 86 toward Hells Canyon or a dead battery at Farewell Bend is a quick phone call away from help. Roadside covers towing, tire service, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a text away for quick troubleshooting (often the fix is as simple as flipping a propane valve), and RVezy support is reachable around the clock. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for the Huntington-to-Joseph corridor before you leave, cell coverage drops in Hells Canyon and offline maps make calling in your exact location much faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Huntington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Huntington, which is fantastic because Idaho is literally across the Snake River. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Huntington include Boise and the Sawtooths (Idaho), Yellowstone via Twin Falls (about 8 hours), and looping back through Bend and the Oregon Coast. Canada trips may be allowed depending on the host and protection coverage, so message your host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: if Yellowstone is on your list, mention it during the booking inquiry, hosts often bump up your mileage allowance for big-loop trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip around Huntington?
Easy to plan for: most motorhome rental Huntington options get 8-12 MPG (Class C and travel trailers) or 14-20 MPG for a campervan rental Huntington travelers love. Gas in Huntington and nearby Ontario tends to run a bit cheaper than Portland or Boise because of Oregon's eastern fuel zones. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop to Hells Canyon and Baker City, budget roughly $180-$280 in fuel for a Class C and $90-$140 for a campervan. Pro tip: fill up in Ontario or Fruitland, ID before heading into Hells Canyon, there are no fuel stations along the 70-mile stretch between Halfway and Oxbow.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Huntington?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick. Oregon State Parks (including Farewell Bend, just up the road) open reservations exactly 6 months in advance through the Oregon State Parks Reservations system, and prime summer weekends in June and July often book on day one. For Hells Canyon Park and Idaho Power campgrounds across the river, reservations open at recreation.gov 6 months out as well. Mid-week and September stays are usually wide open even a few days before. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 6 months before your target Friday, log on at 8 a.m. Pacific, and you'll snag a riverside loop A site at Farewell Bend.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=v.page&id=80What are driving conditions like around Huntington, OR?
Driving around Huntington is refreshingly easy compared to most RV destinations. Interstate 84 runs right through town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Highway 86 to Hells Canyon is paved, scenic, and lightly trafficked. The main things to watch for: summer heat (avoid steep climbs between 2-5 p.m. when engines run hottest), winter ice on the Burnt River Canyon stretch of I-84 (chains sometimes required December-February), and crosswinds in the Treasure Valley near Ontario. Wildlife (deer, antelope) is active at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: use ODOT's TripCheck.com before any winter or shoulder-season drive, it shows live road cameras and chain requirements for every pass.
tripcheck.com/What amenities and hookups can I expect at campgrounds near Huntington?
You'll find solid infrastructure here. Farewell Bend State Park offers full and partial hookups (water, electric, some 50-amp), hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and potable water fill, all just 4 miles from Huntington. Hells Canyon Park (Idaho Power) has full hookups and a boat ramp. More rustic spots like Catherine Creek and many Wallowa-Whitman National Forest sites are dry camping with vault toilets, so you'll rely on your RV's tanks. Free dump stations are available at Farewell Bend and at the Ontario rest area on I-84. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Huntington or Ontario before heading deep into Hells Canyon, fill stations get sparse past Richland.

More than you might expect. Most RVs on RVezy in the Huntington area come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for everyone sleeping aboard. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for a generator if you're planning to dry camp at Hells Canyon Overlook, it makes running the AC after a 95°F afternoon a game-changer.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Huntington?

Mileage policies typically include 100-150 free miles per day with extras at $0.30-$0.45. Pro tip: ask about a propane fire pit, eastern Oregon often has campfire bans from July through September and a propane unit keeps the s'mores tradition alive.
oregon.gov/odf/fire/Pages/restrictions.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Huntington, OR?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your Huntington RV rental directly through RVezy with a credit card at booking, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. A refundable security deposit (typically $500-$1,500 depending on the RV and protection level you choose) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off, it's the single best way to ensure your deposit is returned quickly and without any back-and-forth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available in Huntington, OR?
Yes, and winter in eastern Oregon is a quieter, more magical experience than most travelers realize. Some RVezy hosts in the Huntington and Baker City area keep their RVs available November through March, especially four-season units with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power hookups for electric heaters. Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort (about 70 miles northwest) is a popular ski destination, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness is stunning under snow. Expect Huntington overnight lows of 15-30°F December through February. Pro tip: filter for RVs listed as four-season or winterized, and book a campground with full electric hookups like the Mountain View RV Park in Baker City so you can stay cozy all night.
