The surrounding terrain is sagebrush canyon country at about 3,200 to 3,400 feet elevation, dry and open compared with the wetter side of the Cascades.

Summer is the peak season. June through August brings hot, dry days, mostly clear skies, and the warmest reservoir water, with daytime highs typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and very little rainfall. Nights cool sharply because of the high-desert elevation, so layers matter even in July. Campfire restrictions are often imposed during summer because of regional fire danger, and specific camping areas around the reservoir can move to stove-only rules when conditions are extreme.
Late spring and early fall are good shoulder windows. Because the area sits east of the Cascades, it stays drier than western Oregon in shoulder months, and crowds thin once school is back in session. Jasper Point campground is only open May 1 through September 30, so spring and fall trips concentrate at the Main Camp.
Winter is quiet. The Main Camp and its deluxe cabins stay open year-round for reservations or walk-in use, but the lake can ice up, and most secondary boat ramps are usable only between roughly Memorial Day and Labor Day depending on water levels.
