Campgrounds near Lyons, Oregon
Lyons sits along the North Santiam River in the western Cascade foothills of Oregon, roughly half an hour east of Salem on Highway 22. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into Santiam State Forest, the Detroit Lake corridor, and the Willamette Valley wine country to the west.
Close-in options range from primitive state-managed riverfront sites to full-hookup RV resorts. North Santiam State Recreation Area, now managed by Marion County Parks as North Santiam County Park, is known for riverfront access and steelhead fishing on the North Santiam River, and reopened after wildfire damage from the 2020 fires. Silver Falls State Park, often called the crown jewel of Oregon's state park system, sits about 26 miles east of Salem in the Cascade foothills and is built around the 7.2-mile Trail of Ten Falls.
Private parks fill out the mix. Camp Dakota Campground offers family and group camping in a forested setting in the Cascade foothills, with yurt and tipi rentals, tent sites, RV sites, and group sites. Silver Spur RV Park sits on the outskirts of Silverton with full-hookup sites offering 20, 30, and 50 amp service, water and sewer at each site, and cable TV. Mallard Creek Golf and RV Resort, southeast near Lebanon, pairs full hookups with on-site golf course access.
Things to do near Lyons
The headline attraction is Silver Falls State Park. The 9,000-acre park is built around the Trail of Ten Falls, a 7.2-mile loop passing ten distinct waterfalls, including the 177-foot South Falls that hikers can walk behind. Beyond the waterfall trail, the park has miles of additional trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus Silver Creek for fishing and wading.
The North Santiam River itself draws anglers, paddlers, and swimmers. It is regarded as one of the finest steelhead fishing spots in the area, and short trails at North Santiam Park show off old-growth trees and river views. Detroit Lake, about 25 minutes upriver from Lyons, adds boating, swimming, and reservoir fishing.
Families traveling with kids can break up hikes with on-site activities at Camp Dakota Campground. Options include zip lines, paintball, low and high challenge courses, a climbing wall, gold panning, and disc golf.

Summer is the prime RV window. Days are warm and dry, rivers run at safe swimming levels, and every campground in the area is open. The trade-off is competition for sites: summer weekends at Silver Falls often book out the day the 6-month reservation window opens, so plan to book early or aim for a shoulder-season trip.
Spring brings full waterfalls and green forests. April and May deliver peak waterfall flow after winter rains, lush trails, wildflowers along the creek, and more manageable crowds. Fall offers cooler temperatures, fewer people, and bright maples in mid-October before the wet season returns.
Winter narrows the choices. North Santiam County Park campsites are available April through October only. Winter at Silver Falls can swing between heavy rain and sub-freezing snaps, and icy conditions on park trails and roads are common due to the park's elevation, tree cover, and ambient moisture. Several private parks, including Silver Spur RV Park, stay open year-round for travelers who want a quieter off-season base.

How to book campgrounds near Lyons
Silver Falls State Park sites are booked through oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com, and reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance. Cabin stays require reservations. Summer weekends regularly sell out within hours of the window opening, so setting a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before the target arrival date is recommended.
North Santiam County Park, formerly the state recreation area, takes reservations through Marion County Parks' partner site Camplife, with sites available April through October and bookings open up to one year in advance.
Private parks book directly. Silver Spur RV Park, Camp Dakota Campground, and Mallard Creek Golf and RV Resort take reservations by phone or through their own websites. At Silver Spur, cancellations made more than 72 hours before scheduled check-in are eligible for a full refund minus a processing fee, while cancellations within 72 hours forfeit the first night's payment plus the fee.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a working rural corridor rather than a polished resort scene. State and county sites lean primitive to standard: North Santiam County Park is a primitive, pet-friendly campground with a group picnic shelter, flush toilets, drinking fountains, and a gravel boat launch on the river. At Silver Falls State Park, the campground offers 48 electrical sites with water, 43 tent sites with water nearby, and 14 cabins, in mixed forested terrain near Silver Creek, with flush toilets and showers.
Private parks offer more amenities and tighter spacing. Silver Spur RV Park accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet with full hookups year-round and angled pull-through sites that make maneuvering larger rigs manageable, though sites run small with limited space between neighbors.
Cell service is unreliable throughout Silver Falls, so downloading maps, the Trail of Ten Falls route, and driving directions before arrival is a good idea. Oregon's invasive-pest rules prohibit bringing firewood from outside the local area, but firewood is available for purchase at the park store.

Most travel trailers run about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and Class A coaches sit at $250 to $400 per night. To find a cheap RV rental in Lyons, look for shoulder-season dates in May or late September, book a midweek pickup, and filter for travel trailers for the best value per square foot. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lyons, Oregon?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lyons, Oregon. The Oregon DMV does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers, even larger Class A coaches. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and ID verification is handled in the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Approval is typically quick, often within a few hours.

Every RV rental in Lyons, OR booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Highway 22 toward Detroit Lake with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, which is reassuring on forested routes near Opal Creek. During checkout you choose your coverage level to match your comfort zone. RVezy sets the protection options, not the host, so coverage is consistent and transparent. Combined with the host's pickup walkthrough, you have a real safety net before you turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Lyons RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy is built for it. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking in Lyons, OR, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. If a host cancels, guests are refunded or offered credits per RVezy's policy. You'll see your specific cancellation details at checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for peak Detroit Lake weekends, knowing the grace period has your back if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lyons?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Lyons is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page to see motorhomes and travel trailers that welcome dogs. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: John Neal Memorial Park has river access on the North Santiam, and Silver Falls State Park allows leashed dogs on the Rim Trail (the Canyon Trail Ten Falls loop does not allow pets). Detroit Lake State Recreation Area also permits leashed pets at campsites. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and you're good to roll.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=151Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Lyons?
Yes, RV delivery in Lyons is one of the easiest ways to start a stress-free trip. Many RVezy hosts in the North Santiam Canyon will deliver and set up your motorhome rental at popular spots like Detroit Lake State Recreation Area, John Neal Memorial Park, or a private property in Mill City or Mehama. They level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this, and share your campsite number when you message them. Delivery is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV and you'd rather skip driving Highway 22's curves with a big rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonHow far can I drive from Lyons on an RV road trip?
You can cover a lot of Oregon on an RV road trip from Lyons. Detroit Lake is about 30 miles east on Highway 22, the Pacific Coast at Lincoln City is roughly 90 miles west, Bend and the high desert are about 130 miles southeast over Santiam Pass, and Crater Lake National Park is roughly 180 miles south. Portland sits about 75 miles north for an easy weekend loop. Each RVezy host sets a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day) with reasonable per-mile rates after that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Confirm the mileage policy on the listing page before booking so your route stays on budget.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonWhere are the best campgrounds near Lyons, OR?
You have great options for RV camping in Lyons. Top campgrounds near Lyons include John Neal Memorial Park (a county park about 2 miles from town, with riverside sites and water hookups), North Santiam State Recreation Area (riverside day-use and primitive camping nearby), Detroit Lake State Recreation Area (hundreds of sites on a 9-mile reservoir, about 30 miles east), Fishermans Bend Recreation Site (a BLM campground with shaded sites about 10 miles east), and Silver Falls State Park (RV sites with the famous Trail of Ten Falls, about 20 miles north). Pro tip: lakeside loops at Detroit Lake fill fast, so book the moment your dates open.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=65When is the best time to take an RV trip from Lyons?
Late June through mid-September is prime time for a Lyons RV trip, with daytime highs around 75 to 85F, dry skies, and Detroit Lake at full pool. Spring (April to May) is greener and quieter with 50 to 65F days and Willamette Valley showers, ideal for waterfall chasers at Silver Falls. Fall (mid-September to October) is the local insider pick: 60 to 70F, golden cottonwoods along the North Santiam, and campgrounds quieter after Labor Day. Winters are wet and cool (40s F) with occasional snow above 1,500 feet, but the canyon stays drivable. Book shoulder-season dates for the best mix of weather and price.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.7744&lon=-122.615I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving it from Lyons?
You'll do great, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Most Lyons hosts give a full hands-on orientation at pickup, covering generator start-up, slide-outs, water and sewer hookups, and the propane fridge, and they share their phone number for questions on the road. Roads around Lyons are forgiving for beginners: Highway 22 is a smooth two-lane corridor with wide pullouts, and side roads to John Neal Memorial Park or Fishermans Bend are flat and well-maintained. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan if you're nervous, and you'll be parking like a pro by day two.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking in Lyons, OR includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and breakdowns on Highway 22 or up near Detroit Dam are one phone call away from help. Your host is also a direct line for any quirk specific to their RV, like which switch runs the water pump. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip if you need a hand. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving the driveway and snap photos of your hookups at the campsite, just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lyons RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Lyons. Popular cross-border RV road trips from Lyons include north to Washington's Mount St. Helens (about 175 miles) or the Olympic Peninsula, east to Idaho's Sawtooths, and south to Northern California's redwoods. Travel into Canada is allowed by many hosts but must be approved in advance because protection coverage needs to be extended for the trip, so message the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Confirm your route with the host before booking and you're set for a true Pacific Northwest adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Oregon RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables on an RV rental Oregon trip, so a quick math check helps. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 8 mpg, and campervans (Class B) a friendly 14 to 18 mpg. Oregon gas in the Salem-Lyons area typically runs around $3.80 to $4.50 per gallon. For a 200-mile loop from Lyons to Detroit Lake and back via Silver Falls, plan on roughly $80 to $110 in fuel for a Class C. Top off in Stayton or Mill City before heading up the canyon, since stations get sparse east of Detroit toward Santiam Pass.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lyons?
For peak summer weekends, book your campground 4 to 6 months ahead, especially at Detroit Lake State Recreation Area, Silver Falls State Park, and Fishermans Bend. Oregon State Parks open reservations six months in advance through their official reservation site, and lakeside loops at Detroit Lake sell out within minutes for July and August dates. Federal sites like Southshore on Detroit Lake book through Recreation.gov, also on a six-month window. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are much easier to grab, and watching for cancellations can score you a last-minute lakeside spot.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=65What are driving conditions like around Lyons?
Driving around Lyons is refreshingly mellow for an RV. Highway 22 (the North Santiam Highway) is the main artery, a wide two-lane road with gentle curves connecting Salem to Detroit Lake and Santiam Pass. Oregon's standard maximum combined RV/trailer length is 65 feet on most highways, with Highway 242 over McKenzie Pass restricted to shorter vehicles, so stick to Highway 22 or 20 for east-west crossings with bigger rigs. Watch for log trucks, deer at dawn and dusk, and ice or snow above 2,000 feet from November through March (carry chains in winter). Check TripCheck before you go for live road conditions over the passes.
tripcheck.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Lyons offer for RVs?
Local campgrounds are well set up for RV camping in Lyons. John Neal Memorial Park offers water hookups, flush toilets, and showers right on the North Santiam River. Detroit Lake State Recreation Area has full-hookup and electric-only sites, hot showers, a dump station, and a visitor center. Silver Falls State Park has electric sites, showers, and a dump station. Generator hours are restricted at most state park campgrounds, so a rig with a solid battery or solar setup is a plus for quiet hours. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank in Stayton or Mill City before heading deeper into the canyon.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=65What features and amenities come inside a Lyons RV rental?
Lyons RV rentals come ready for adventure. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class A and C motorhomes, convertible dinettes for extra sleepers), a kitchen with propane stove, microwave, and fridge, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both AC and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays at Fishermans Bend. Wi-Fi hotspots are common on newer rentals, though canyon cell service can be spotty past Mill City. Every listing on RVezy spells out the exact features, sleeping capacity, and seatbelt count, so you can match the rig to your crew before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my RV rental?
Hosts in Lyons offer a helpful menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include kitchen kits, bedding packages, camp chairs and tables, bike racks, Wi-Fi hotspot rentals, generator hours, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Lyons, Mill City, Stayton, or Salem, with many hosts offering delivery to Detroit Lake or Silver Falls for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage allowances typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles billed at a per-mile rate set by the host. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kitchen kit so your only job at the campsite is opening a folding chair.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons,OregonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Lyons, OR is handled securely through RVezy, with no cash or side deals with the host. You pay the rental total at booking using a credit or debit card, and the funds are held by RVezy until your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking total and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after a clean return. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos of the exterior and interior, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels you started with.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Lyons during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Lyons is a quiet, beautiful option and many hosts list year-round. Look for rigs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a strong propane furnace if you want to camp above 1,500 feet near Detroit Lake, where overnight lows can dip into the 20s F from December through February. Lower-elevation spots like John Neal Memorial Park stay milder, often in the 30s and 40s F. Use the listing's heating details and message the host about winterization. Pro tip: a winter Silver Falls trip with mist-soaked waterfalls and zero crowds is one of Oregon's best-kept secrets, and a properly equipped motorhome makes it cozy.
