Campgrounds near Metolius, Oregon
Metolius sits in Jefferson County in Central Oregon's high desert, on the farming plateau between Madras and Culver. RV travelers use it as a base for Lake Billy Chinook, the Lower Deschutes River, and the Cascade peaks visible to the west. Most camping options within a short drive cluster around the reservoir formed where the Crooked, Deschutes, and Metolius rivers meet.
The Cove Palisades State Park is the anchor public campground, with two distinct areas: Crooked River Camp on the rim and Deschutes Campground closer to the water. Lake Simtustus RV Park offers private full-hookup sites on a separate reservoir just north. The Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday provides a family-oriented option south near Redmond with cabins, tent sites, and RV pull-throughs.
For anglers heading northwest toward Warm Springs, the Deschutes River Fly Shop and Camp sits along Highway 26 with RV sites, tent spots, cabins, and an on-site fly shop and deli.
Things to do near Metolius
Lake Billy Chinook drives most of the recreation in the area. Boating, water-skiing, kayaking, and fishing are the main draws, with the marina at The Cove Palisades renting boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and houseboats from spring through fall. From fall to spring, the Crooked and Deschutes rivers provide 30 miles of flat-water paddling, including a 6-mile Crooked River Water Trail on the Crooked River arm of the reservoir.
Hikers can take the Tam-a-láu Trail, which climbs 600 feet for views of the snow-capped Cascade Range and the Deschutes and Crooked river canyons, starting either in the Deschutes Campground or the Upper Deschutes day-use area. Smith Rock State Park, a short drive south, adds world-class rock climbing and canyon hiking.
Anglers head to the Lower Deschutes for trout and steelhead, while the Metolius River near Camp Sherman offers spring-fed fly fishing in old-growth forest.

The area has a high-desert climate with cold winters, warm dry summers, and shoulder seasons that swing widely between day and night temperatures. Peak demand runs from late June through Labor Day, when school is out and the lake is busy. The park and its campgrounds are busiest in summer, particularly from June through early September, and weekdays in late May or early September are good alternatives for warm weather without the crowds.
Seasonal access matters for trip planning. At The Cove Palisades, the Crooked River campground (E-loop) has a partial loop open in winter with the full loop open March through October, while the Deschutes campground (A, B, and C loops) and the moorage slips open mid-May through mid-September.
Fire restrictions are common during dry late-summer stretches, so check current conditions before arrival. Smoke from regional wildfires can also reduce visibility in the canyon in late summer.

We had a great time using the rv, enough room to walk inside and enough room for everybody in our party to sleep. We will rent again. Thank you Justice & Amanda.

How to book campgrounds near Metolius
State park sites at The Cove Palisades, covering both Crooked River Camp and Deschutes Campground, are reserved through the Oregon State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance at oregonstateparks.reserveamerica.com, with availability opening at 6am Pacific. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, so booking at the six-month window is the safest approach.
Same-day reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but only in person, so arrive early for the best chance of getting a spot. Cabins inside the park are handled separately through the Cove Palisades Resort.
Private parks book directly. Lake Simtustus RV Park, the Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday, and the Deschutes River Fly Shop and Camp each take reservations on their own websites or by phone, and the KOA also books through the KOA reservation system.
What to expect on arrival
Expect high-desert conditions: dry air, intense sun, cool nights, and dramatic canyon views. Cell coverage can be limited around the reservoir, with AT&T generally receiving the most consistent signal while other carriers see spottier service inside the canyon. Plan downloads in advance and bring paper maps if heading deeper into the canyon.
Access roads can be steep. The descent from the Crooked River rim to the Deschutes campground and day-use area is a long winding grade, and the road into Lake Simtustus RV Park follows a narrow canyon route with switchbacks. The southern approach to the lake includes a one-lane bridge that is not suitable for RVs or trailers, so approach Lake Simtustus from the north via Highway 26 and Pelton Dam Road.
Cove Palisades campsites have fire rings, but fire restrictions take effect during elevated wildfire risk. Buy firewood locally to help limit the spread of invasive pests.
