Camping near North Powder
North Powder sits along Interstate 84 in Union County, Oregon, between La Grande and Baker City in the Powder River Valley. The town is best known as the I-84 exit (Exit 285) for the Anthony Lake Highway, which climbs west into the Elkhorn Mountains and the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. RV travelers typically use North Powder as a base for the Elkhorn Scenic Byway, the Eagle Cap Wilderness to the east, and Oregon Trail historic sites near Baker City.
Full-hookup options cluster within a short drive of the freeway. The Historic Union Hotel and RV Park and Catherine Creek State Park lie east of town near Union, while Grande Hot Springs RV Resort is northwest toward La Grande. Mtn View RV Park and A-Frame RV Park sit south near Baker City and handle larger rigs.
Expect a mix of private RV parks that operate most of the year and seasonal state and national forest campgrounds that close once snow arrives at elevation.
Things to do near North Powder
The Anthony Lakes Recreation Area is the main draw from the North Powder exit. The lake sits at roughly 7,100 feet in the Elkhorn Range, with a 1-mile shoreline loop, access to the 22.6-mile Elkhorn Crest Trail, and trout fishing on a lake limited to electric motors and non-motorized boats. The access road becomes Forest Road 73 and feeds the Elkhorn Scenic Byway, a 106-mile loop.
Catherine Creek State Park, east toward Union, offers creek-side picnicking, short hikes, and rainbow trout fishing under ponderosa pines. Grande Hot Springs RV Resort has geothermal mineral pools on site.
Farther afield, the Eagle Cap Wilderness has hundreds of miles of trails for hikers and horse packers, and the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center near Baker City covers regional pioneer history.
