Prineville Lake Acres camping overview
Prineville Lake Acres sits in Central Oregon's high desert on the north shore of Prineville Reservoir, a 15-mile long, 3,000-acre impoundment of the Crooked River formed by Bowman Dam. The reservoir is the anchor for most camping in the area, with Oregon State Parks operating the two developed campgrounds closest to the community.
Main Camp - Prineville Reservoir State Park offers full-hookup, electric, and tent sites plus deluxe log cabins, with paved spurs, hot showers, and a dump station. Jasper Point - Prineville Reservoir State Park, about three miles east of the main campground, is a smaller loop of electrical sites best suited to shorter RVs and trailers. Both sit directly on the water.
For travelers who want hookups closer to town or to Bend, Cottonwood RV Park serves Prineville itself, Sundance Meadows Ownership Sites lie west toward Bend, and Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday provides a full-service stop near Highway 97 with easy access to Redmond Airport.
Things to do near Prineville Lake Acres
The reservoir drives the trip list: boating, water skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming from the day-use beaches. Fishing is strong for smallmouth and largemouth bass, rainbow trout, crappie, and catfish, and the main park's boat ramp is the only one on the reservoir long enough to use year-round.
On land, a lakeside trail connects Jasper Point and the main campground, and the surrounding canyon country offers wildlife viewing and birding. The state park is a certified International Dark Sky Park, so stargazing programs and the August Perseid meteor shower are major draws.
Guests based at Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday or Sundance Meadows Ownership Sites can also reach Smith Rock State Park, the Deschutes River, and downtown Bend within a short drive.

December - February
41° / 25°F 40 mmCold nights and snow; ice can close boat ramps
Summer is the peak season. Days are hot and dry, nights cool off sharply because of the high desert elevation around 3,200 feet, and the reservoir is at its busiest from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Most of the five official boat ramps on the reservoir are usable during this window, depending on water levels set by the Bureau of Reclamation.
Late spring and early fall are quieter alternatives with warm days and far fewer crowds. Jasper Point - Prineville Reservoir State Park operates seasonally, open May through September, while Main Camp - Prineville Reservoir State Park and its deluxe cabins stay open year-round for reservations or walk-in use.
Winter brings cold nights, occasional snow, and ice that can shut down boat launching on the reservoir. Campfire restrictions are common during summer fire season, and water-level drawdowns can close some ramps later in the year, so checking park alerts before arrival is worthwhile.

How to book campgrounds near Prineville Lake Acres
Sites at Main Camp - Prineville Reservoir State Park are reserved through the Oregon State Parks reservation system. The booking window opens six months in advance on a rolling daily basis, and summer weekends, holidays, and the Perseid period in August fill quickly after the window opens.
Jasper Point - Prineville Reservoir State Park operates differently: its 28 electrical sites are first-come, first-served, with one reservable cabin. Arriving early on a weekday improves the odds of finding a spot during peak season.
Private parks book directly. Cottonwood RV Park, Sundance Meadows Ownership Sites, and Redmond / Central Oregon KOA Holiday each take reservations through their own websites or phone lines, and the KOA is generally the easiest backup when state-park inventory is sold out.
What to expect at Prineville Lake Acres
Expect a high-desert setting: open sage and juniper country, big skies, and dramatic day-to-night temperature swings. Bring layers even in summer, and plan for sun exposure on the water.
The main campground has paved parking spurs, tables, fire rings, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, and many sites accommodate larger RVs and trailers. A six-person-per-site limit applies, pets must be leashed, and additional vehicles cannot stay overnight in the park. A per-use dump station fee and a day-use parking permit requirement now apply at the state park.
Cell service is limited around the reservoir, and the nearest full-service grocery and fuel stops are in Prineville, about a 20-minute drive from the main campground.
