Campgrounds and RV parks near Saunders Lake, OR

The Oregon Dunes are the main draw. The recreation area stretches along the coast from Florence to Coos Bay and is one of the largest expanses of temperate coastal sand dunes in the world. The Spinreel and Horsfall areas south of Saunders Lake are popular OHV staging points, while hikers can use non-motorized areas such as the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area and the John Dellenback Dunes Trail. On the water, Saunders Lake itself has a boat ramp and is suited to kayaks, paddleboards, and small fishing boats. Eel Lake at William M Tugman State Park holds largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and crappie, with a fishing pier and swim beach. For off-rig days, Coos Bay and North Bend offer groceries, marine supply, and casino dining at The Mill, and the Umpqua Lighthouse and Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area are short drives north.

Summer is peak season on the southern Oregon coast. July and August are the driest, sunniest months, with cool ocean influence keeping daytime highs moderate. State park sites and yurts fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays, and yurts in particular should be booked months ahead. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and active trout stocking, but also more rain. Beach access changes seasonally: during snowy plover nesting season from March 15 through September 15, the Forest Service coordinates with Oregon State Parks to protect these threatened birds, and foot and equestrian traffic is restricted to wet sand only on designated plover beaches. OHV beach riding in the Spinreel and Horsfall area is only allowed October 1 through April 30; the rest of the year that beach is set aside for non-motorized use to protect plover habitat. Winter is wet and quiet. At Tugman, the B Loop closes to reservations mid-September through April with sites available first come first served, and the C Loop is closed October 1 through mid-May.

Sites in this corridor are typically wooded with shore pine, salal, and huckleberry, which gives privacy but also means damp, soft ground after rain. RVs should be prepared with leveling blocks; some pads at Tugman are noted by campers as uneven. Tugman has a dump station near the entrance but no sewer hookups at individual sites, and cellular service is patchy in the dunes themselves. Expect coastal fog most summer mornings and steady wind off the Pacific in the afternoons. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be noticeable around lake edges in late spring and early summer. Highway 101 runs close to several campgrounds in the area, so road noise is possible at sites near the highway. Buy locally harvested firewood at or near your destination, or buy certified heat-treated firewood ahead of time, to avoid spreading Emerald Ash Borer and other pests.
