Campgrounds and RV parks near Sunriver, OR

Outdoor activity is the main draw. The Deschutes and Fall rivers offer trout fishing, paddling, and floating, while Newberry National Volcanic Monument adds Paulina and East lakes, Lava River Cave, and Lava Butte. Mt. Bachelor handles skiing and snowboarding in winter and lift-served mountain biking in summer. Families use Sunriver's paved bike-path network, the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory, and the High Desert Museum south of Bend. LaPine State Park connects to 14 miles of multi-use trails along both sides of the river and protects Oregon's largest ponderosa pine, thought to be 500-plus years old, reached by a short paved trail near the park entrance. Day trips reach Smith Rock State Park, the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, and downtown Bend's breweries and restaurants.

Sunriver has a high-desert climate with short, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. July and August are the peak RV season, with warm days, cool nights, and the lowest rainfall of the year. Reservations for state-park and national-forest sites should be made months in advance for this window, and fire bans on open flames and fire pits are common at the park, particularly during the summer months, and during periods of extreme risk bans on propane cooking stoves are also sometimes put into place. Late spring and early fall, roughly May, September, and October, bring cooler temperatures and far smaller crowds. Wildlife viewing is good, and most private RV parks remain fully open. Many Deschutes National Forest campgrounds along the Cascade lakes are seasonal and typically close once snow arrives. Winter is cold and snowy, with December the wettest and cloudiest month. The north loop at LaPine State Park closes for the season Oct. 1 and the middle loop closes Oct. 15, while the south campground loop, cabins, McGregor Memorial Viewpoint and park trails remain open in winter. From October 15th through April 30th, water hookups are turned off at campsites and the RV dump station, though water is available at site 36, and restrooms, showers, and deluxe cabins have water year round.

Elevation around Sunriver is roughly 4,200 feet, so nights are cool even in midsummer and frost is possible outside the peak months. Days are dry and sunny in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms can pass through. The forest floor is sandy and dusty, especially in July and August. Full-hookup RV sites are concentrated in private parks and at LaPine State Park. National forest campgrounds are typically rustic, with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, and most have no hookups and limited or no potable water. Cell service is spotty once outside Sunriver and Bend. Fire risk peaks in late summer. Watch for stage 1 or 2 restrictions that limit or prohibit campfires, charcoal, and sometimes propane stoves. You are allowed to bring your own firewood as long as it was grown in Oregon, or buy it locally to avoid spreading invasive pests.
