Campgrounds near Three Rivers, Oregon
Three Rivers is a small unincorporated community in Deschutes County in central Oregon, sitting between Sunriver and La Pine along the Upper Deschutes River corridor. The area is high-desert ponderosa pine country east of the Cascade crest, with the Deschutes National Forest wrapping in on three sides and the Newberry National Volcanic Monument a short drive east.
RV travelers use Three Rivers as a base for central Oregon's signature outdoors: river floats, fly fishing, lava-tube caves, and high-elevation lakes. LaPine State Park sits along the Deschutes River roughly between La Pine and Bend off Highway 97, putting the region's largest public campground within a short drive.
Nearby private and public options span the spectrum. LaPine State Park Campground anchors public camping with full-hookup sites and cabins. Cascade Meadows RV Resort, Bend Sunriver RV Campground, Sun Outdoors Bend, and Newberry RV Park provide private-park amenities such as laundry, pull-through sites, and longer-rig access better suited to family stays.
Things to do near Three Rivers
LaPine State Park occupies a scenic spot along the trout-filled Upper Deschutes River in a high-desert subalpine forest. The quiet, shady campground connects to 14 miles of multi-use trails that follow both sides of the river and link key park landmarks, with hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and floating all available right in the park. The park is also home to Oregon's largest ponderosa pine, thought to be more than 500 years old.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument sits a short drive east. The Paulina Visitor Center is open mid-June to mid-September, the Newberry Caldera is typically accessible via vehicle June through October, the Lava Lands Visitor Center is open May to early October, and Lava River Cave is open May to mid-September. East Lake and Paulina Lake inside the caldera support fishing, boating, swimming, and paddling.
Sunriver, just north, has paved bike paths, a nature center, and food options.

Summer is the prime RV window. July and August bring warm, dry days with highs typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and cool nights that often dip into the upper 40s, reflecting the area's 4,000-plus-foot elevation. Demand peaks in these months: LaPine State Park's reservable sites and the Newberry Caldera campgrounds book out well in advance.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for variable weather. May, September, and early October bring pleasant days without the summer pressure on sites. Wildfire smoke can drift through in late summer, and Stage 1 fire restrictions are common in Deschutes National Forest, limiting open flames.
Winter is quiet but viable for self-contained rigs. LaPine State Park is open year-round for camping and day use. The north loop closes for the season Oct. 1 and the middle loop closes Oct. 15. Much of the park is open through winter: the south campground loop, cabins, McGregor Memorial Viewpoint, and park trails. Roads to the Newberry Caldera are closed to vehicles for much of the year due to snow, and typically open from late spring through October.

How to book campgrounds near Three Rivers
Public and private campgrounds use separate systems. LaPine State Park cabins and campsites are released for reservation at 6 a.m. daily, six months in advance, and are available for reservation up to one day in advance. Reservations can be made online using the Oregon State Parks reservation system or over the phone. Same-day reservations are sometimes available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Forest Service campgrounds inside Newberry National Volcanic Monument, including Cinder Hill, East Lake, Little Crater, and Paulina Lake, take reservations through Recreation.gov. Demand for summer weekends is high, so booking as soon as the window opens is recommended.
Private parks such as Cascade Meadows RV Resort, Bend Sunriver RV Campground, Newberry RV Park, and Sun Outdoors Bend take reservations directly through their own websites or front desks, with longer booking windows and more flexibility for big rigs.
What to expect on the ground
Most sites in the area sit in open ponderosa pine forest on the dry side of the Cascades. Expect dusty soils, big trees, and cool, clear nights even in July. LaPine State Park Campground has campsites separated into three loops: north, middle, and south. The campground is open year-round, but only the south loop remains open for the full year, while the north and middle loops close for the winter.
From October 15 through April 30, water hookups are turned off at campsites and the RV dump station, though water is available at site 36 for filling containers and RV tanks. Restrooms, showers, and deluxe cabins have water year-round. Electric and sewer hookups function year-round, but sewer hookups at campsites and the RV dump station may be inaccessible due to snow.
The closest spot for groceries and supplies is the town of La Pine, a short drive south. Cell service is spotty once off Highway 97.
