Campgrounds and RV parks near Umatilla, OR

Hat Rock State Park is the headline attraction, named for the hat-shaped basalt formation that Lewis and Clark recorded as the first distinctive landmark on their journey down the Columbia. The day-use park offers a boat ramp, a pond stocked with rainbow trout, picnic areas, a sand volleyball court, and the Hat Rock Trail, with sweeping views of Lake Wallula. Water recreation drives most trips here. Lake Wallula is noted for walleye, sturgeon, and other fish, and water skiing, jet skiing, swimming, and boating are popular through the warm months. The ten-mile Umatilla County Lewis and Clark Commemorative Trail runs east from Hat Rock along the lakeshore. Wildlife viewing is strong year-round, with waterfowl on the pond, barn owls on the cliffs above the lake, and wintering eagles along the shoreline. Nearby, the McNary Dam and Interpretive Center and the McNary Wildlife Nature Area add easy half-day stops in town.

Umatilla has a semi-arid steppe climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. Peak RV season runs from late May through September, when the riverfront parks fill up around weekends, holidays, and regional fishing tournaments. July routinely averages highs near 89°F and August stays in the upper 80s, so shaded riverside sites at places like Umatilla Marina and RV Park are worth booking early. Spring and fall are the most comfortable shoulder seasons. May, June, September, and early October bring mild days, cool nights, and lighter crowds, and they line up well with bird migration along the Columbia. Wildflowers appear on the sagebrush hills in spring. Winter stays open at most private RV parks, but expect cold mornings, the occasional snow event, and reduced services. Flush restrooms at Hat Rock State Park may close in cold weather, with pit toilets available. Wind along the river can be strong in any season, and gusts on the bluff sites are common.

Most RV parks near Umatilla are flat, gravel-pad properties with full hookups, picnic tables, and easy big-rig access from I-82 and U.S. 730. Umatilla Marina and RV Park sits next to the Columbia with grassy areas, walking paths, a marina with a fuel dock and sewage pump-out, a swimming cove, and a disc golf area. Highway and rail noise is common at riverside parks. The land is open and exposed, so wind can hit awnings hard. Shade varies site to site, and water pressure at some hookups runs high, so a regulator is wise. Cell service is generally good in town but can drop near the dam. The nearest full-service grocery and fuel are in Umatilla and Hermiston. Bring sun protection, insect repellent for evenings near the water, and check current fire restrictions before using stoves or grills.
