Campgrounds near Vale, Oregon
Vale sits in Malheur County in eastern Oregon, a high-desert town along the Malheur River about fifteen miles west of the Idaho border and the Snake River. The surrounding landscape is sagebrush steppe and irrigated farmland, with the Owyhee Mountains visible to the south and the Snake River canyon defining the eastern edge of the region. RV travelers typically use Vale as a base between Boise and Bend, or as a stop along the historic Oregon Trail corridor that follows Interstate 84.
Camping options near Vale split into three categories: small private RV parks in town and in nearby Ontario, county-run reservoir parks operated by Malheur County, and Oregon State Parks along the Snake River. Closest to town, Malheur County Fairgrounds, River Point RV Park, and Neat Retreat RV Park serve travelers needing hookups and quick interstate access. Oasis on the Snake offers riverfront sites along the Snake, and Farewell Bend State Park provides the most developed public campground in the area on Brownlee Reservoir.
Most sites sit at low elevation, around two thousand feet, which keeps the camping season long but the summer heat intense.
Things to do near Vale
Water recreation centers on the Snake River and its reservoirs. Brownlee Reservoir offers fishing, water skiing, and boating, and Bully Creek Reservoir ten miles west of Vale holds smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, yellow perch, and crappie. Oasis on the Snake puts boaters directly on the river, and Farewell Bend State Park has a paved boat ramp, fish cleaning station, and viewing deck.
History is a major draw. Vale was the first Oregon stop on the Oregon Trail after pioneers crossed the Snake, and the town preserves wagon ruts, pioneer murals, and the Stone House Museum. Historic markers and interpretive displays at Farewell Bend describe the pioneers' last camp along the Snake before they turned northwest into the Burnt River country.
Wildlife watching is good year round. Deer, pronghorn, geese, eagles, chukars, and quail are commonly seen in the area.

The camping season in the Vale area is long but shaped by extreme summer heat and cold winters. Late spring through early summer, roughly mid-April through mid-June, brings the most comfortable temperatures and the highest reservoir levels for boating. Wildflowers bloom across the sagebrush steppe in May. This window is the best balance of weather, water access, and site availability.
Midsummer is hot and dry, with afternoon highs frequently above ninety degrees. In mid to late summer the grass and trees at riverside parks may go dormant, leaving brown lawns and thinning leaf cover. Mosquito populations can be high during the summer, and campfire restrictions may be in place; check ahead before lighting a fire.
Fall brings cooler nights and good fishing, but services taper off. Water is shut off to sites at Farewell Bend from October through April, though showers remain available. Winter camping is limited to a handful of private parks with year-round hookups, since Farewell Bend and Bully Creek both close for the winter.
How to book a campground near Vale
Farewell Bend State Park, the largest public campground in the area, books through the Oregon State Parks reservation system on Reserve America. Reservations can be made from one day to nine months in advance, and internet reservations open at midnight. The campground is reservable May through September; March, April, October, and November are first come, first served; and the park is closed for camping December through February.
Malheur County parks, including Bully Creek Park at Bully Creek Reservoir, are reserved by phoning the Malheur County Parks Department directly; the park operates from April 15 through November 15. Private parks such as River Point RV Park, Neat Retreat RV Park, and Oasis on the Snake take reservations directly by phone or website. Malheur County Fairgrounds operates largely on a self-pay basis and availability may be limited during fair week and major horse shows.
What to expect
Expect a high-desert experience: wide open skies, sparse shade, and dry air. Sites at Farewell Bend are paved and level with electric and water hookups at most RV spots, plus flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. An off-leash dog park is at the south end of the park near the main entrance. Private parks in and around Vale and Ontario lean utilitarian, with gravel pads, full hookups, and easy interstate access rather than scenic settings.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-84 corridor and weakens on back roads toward Bully Creek and Beulah reservoirs. Grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to find in Ontario and Vale. Water levels fluctuate on Brownlee Reservoir, and current levels are posted on idahopower.com, which is worth checking before any trip planned around boating or shoreline access.
