RV camping near Winston, Oregon
Winston sits in Douglas County along the South Umpqua River in southern Oregon, just off Interstate 5 about 80 miles south of Eugene. The town is best known as home to Wildlife Safari, a 600-acre drive-through wildlife park founded in 1972 that houses over 500 animals from Africa, Asia, and the Americas and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
RV travelers use Winston as a base for the broader Roseburg area, the Umpqua Valley wine region, and day trips toward Crater Lake and the Oregon Coast. Most nearby campgrounds are private, full-hookup RV parks set along or near the South Umpqua River. Rising River RV Park and On The River Golf and RV Resort sit close to the river, Bar Run Golf & RV Resort pairs camping with an 18-hole course and a resort pool, and the Wildlife Safari RV Area sits on the grounds of the safari park itself.
Interstate 5 access at Exit 119 makes the area easy to reach from California or the Pacific Northwest, and most parks offer pull-through sites that suit larger rigs.
Things to do around Winston
Wildlife Safari is the headline attraction: visitors drive a 4.5-mile loop through habitats with lions, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, African elephants, and Sumatran tigers, with a free walk-through Safari Village, petting zoo, café, and gift shop on site. Pets are not allowed in the drive-through or village, but free on-site kennels are provided, and convertibles must keep their tops up at all times.
The South Umpqua River supports fishing, kayaking, and rafting in the surrounding area. Umpqua Valley wineries spread across the region, and self-guided covered-bridge and waterfall driving routes head east from Roseburg toward Umpqua National Forest. Golfers staying at Bar Run Golf & RV Resort can play the on-site course alongside the river.

Summers in Winston are short, warm, and very dry, with July and August typically the warmest and driest months. July averages a daytime high near 86°F with very little rain, making mid-June through early September the most reliable window for RV travel. This is also peak booking season for the riverside parks, so reservations should be made well in advance for weekends.
Fall brings cooler temperatures, foliage along the river, and the return of rain. Winter is the wet season: December is the wettest month, averaging roughly 140 to 200 mm of rainfall, and the South Umpqua can run high. Most private RV parks in the Winston and Roseburg area stay open year-round, but the Wildlife Safari RV Area itself operates seasonally from March through October.
Late summer and early fall can bring wildfire smoke to Douglas County. Fire season in the Douglas District is typically declared by the Douglas Forest Protective Association in early summer and lifted in fall, with public-use restrictions on campfires and power equipment during that window.
How to book campgrounds near Winston
The campgrounds closest to Winston are privately operated. Rising River RV Park, On The River Golf and RV Resort, Rivers West RV Park, and Bar Run Golf & RV Resort each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and several also list inventory on third-party platforms. The Wildlife Safari RV Area on Safari Road is a small seasonal campground that operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not require reservations.
For public-land options in the broader region, Oregon State Parks accepts reservations from one day to six months in advance, with a non-refundable transaction fee per reservation. U.S. Forest Service sites in Umpqua National Forest book through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window. For peak summer weekends, book at the opening of the booking window.
What to expect at Winston RV parks
Most parks within a short drive of Winston are full-hookup RV resorts with 30- and 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, and on-site stores or small markets. Several sit directly along the South Umpqua River, with Rising River RV Park and On The River Golf and RV Resort offering riverfront sites, and Bar Run Golf & RV Resort pairing concrete-pad RV sites with on-site cottages, a pool, and golf access.
Sites along Highway 99 and I-5 can carry some road noise, which guests at riverside parks frequently mention. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along the interstate corridor but drops quickly in the surrounding hills. Some private parks restrict certain dog breeds, so confirm pet policies before booking.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Winston, OR
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Winston, OR?
RV rental in Winston is affordable compared to larger Oregon hubs like Portland or Bend. On RVezy, travel trailers near Winston typically range from about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400. Shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October) are the sweet spot for cheap RV rental Winston deals, since Wildlife Safari stays open year round and demand softens after summer. Tip: filter by Instant Book and message hosts about weekly discounts, since many drop their nightly rate 10 to 20 percent for stays of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winston%2C%20OregonWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Winston, Oregon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Winston. Oregon does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license for personal motorhomes or trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers every Class B, Class C, travel trailer, and most Class A rigs on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and the platform verifies your ID during checkout, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set to roll out toward the Umpqua Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Winston, OR protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Winston booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built into your reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you select the coverage level that fits your comfort at checkout (the policy is set by RVezy, not the host). That means if a tree branch dings the roof at Susan Creek Campground or a tire blows on Highway 138 heading toward Crater Lake, you have real support. It is not traditional insurance, but it offers meaningful financial peace of mind so you can focus on spotting cheetahs at Wildlife Safari instead of worrying about what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Winston RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes that easy to handle. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Winston RV trip with confidence. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or offers travel credit so you are not left scrambling. Full details are on the RVezy Help Center, and the short version is: booking now is low risk, so go ahead and reserve your rig before summer fills up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Winston?
Yes, and the Umpqua Valley is a great place for a road trip with a pup. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Winston, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings whose owners welcome dogs (often with a small cleaning fee). Heads up: pets are not allowed inside the Wildlife Safari drive-through or Safari Village, but the park provides a free kennel area near the entrance while you tour. For off-leash time, head to Stewart Park in nearby Roseburg, which has a fenced dog park, or hit the riverside trails along the South Umpqua. Local campgrounds like Susan Creek and Bar Run Golf and RV Resort are dog-friendly too.
wildlifesafari.net/plan-your-visit/Can a host deliver the RV to my campground in Winston?
Yes, RV delivery in Winston is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the Roseburg-Winston area will drop the RV at your campsite, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery spots include South Fork RV Park, the Wildlife Safari RV Area, and private driveways. Filter by Delivery on the search page and review each host's delivery radius and fee (often a flat fee plus a per-mile rate). It is the closest thing to a hotel-on-wheels experience without ever sitting in the driver's seat.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-Delivery-of-the-RVHow far can I drive on an RV rental with unlimited mileage from Winston?
You have plenty of range from Winston, and many hosts on RVezy offer generous mileage packages or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Each listing shows the included daily miles plus the cost per extra mile (commonly $0.30 to $0.50). For context, Crater Lake National Park is about 80 miles east (roughly 2 hours), the Oregon Coast at Coos Bay is about 85 miles west, Eugene sits about 70 miles north, and Ashland is about 100 miles south. If you are planning a bigger Pacific Northwest loop, message the host before booking and ask about a mileage add-on bundle, since most are happy to customize.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038107054-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Winston, OR?
Some of the best campgrounds near Winston are within a few miles of Wildlife Safari, so you can roll out of bed and be face-to-face with a giraffe before breakfast. Top picks include South Fork RV Park (full hookups close to the safari), Rising River RV Resort along the South Umpqua, On the River Golf and RV Resort, and Bar Run Golf and RV Resort just up the road in Roseburg. For a more rustic RV camping Winston experience, head 30 to 45 minutes northeast to Susan Creek Campground on the wild and scenic North Umpqua River, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
blm.gov/visit/susan-creek-campgroundWhen is the best time of year for a Winston RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Winston RV trip, with comfortable daytime highs and dry, sunny weather across most of summer. Spring (April to May) brings lush green hills, blooming vineyards, and mild temperatures, perfect for wine touring around Abacela and Melrose Vineyards. Wildlife Safari is open nearly every day of the year and animals are often more active in cooler weather, making winter visits surprisingly rewarding. Insider tip: September is a local favorite, with dry weather, harvest season at Umpqua Valley wineries, and fewer crowds at Crater Lake.
weather.gov/mfr/I've never driven an RV before, is it really doable in Winston?
It is, and Winston is one of the friendlier spots in Oregon for first time renting an RV. The town sits on flat valley terrain just off Interstate 5, with wide rural roads, easy pull-through gas stations, and minimal city traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and dumping, and many offer delivery so your very first drive is from the campground, not a parking lot. Class B campervans and small Class C motorhomes are easiest for newcomers. Once you are rolling, the drive to Crater Lake on Highway 138 is mostly gentle grades with great river views.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Winston RV rental?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so one phone call gets you a tow, tire change, battery jump, fuel delivery, or lockout service anywhere from downtown Winston to remote stretches of Highway 138 along the North Umpqua. Cell coverage is solid along Interstate 5 and most of the Umpqua Valley, though it can dip in the Cascade Mountains heading toward Diamond Lake, so download offline maps before you go. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to the rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Winston RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Winston can cross state lines, and many guests head south to California's redwoods or north into Washington. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts and protection plans but not all, so message the listing owner before booking to confirm your route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Popular multi-state loops from Winston include the Oregon Coast to Northern California (Brookings to Crescent City is about 1.5 hours) or north to the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Rainier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Winston RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental itself, so plan ahead. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A or fifth wheels closer to 6 to 10 mpg. Oregon gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so expect roughly $3.90 to $4.50 per gallon in the Roseburg-Winston area, with convenient stations along Interstate 5 exits. For a 300-mile round trip to Crater Lake, budget roughly $90 to $150 in fuel for a mid-sized Class C. Heads up: Oregon now allows self-serve at most stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Winston?
For private RV parks around Winston like South Fork, Bar Run, or Rising River, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty, even in summer. State parks and national forest campgrounds along the North Umpqua (Susan Creek, Bogus Creek, Horseshoe Bend) book through Recreation.gov and open reservations up to six months in advance, so for July and August weekends claim your spot the day the booking window opens. Diamond Lake and Crater Lake-area campgrounds fill fastest, so aim for four to six months out. Insider move: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are wide open even on short notice and often cheaper per night.
recreation.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Winston, OR?
Driving conditions around Winston are about as easy as Oregon gets. The town sits at low valley elevation, Interstate 5 runs right through, and Highway 42 west toward the coast plus Highway 138 east toward Crater Lake are well-maintained routes with gradual grades. Watch for summer wildfire smoke from July through early September (check TripCheck before you roll), and expect winter rain from November through March with occasional snow and ice in the Cascades heading toward Diamond Lake. Deer are common at dawn and dusk on rural roads, so ease off the throttle in low light. Avoid driving large RVs through the narrow streets of historic downtown Oakland north of Roseburg.
tripcheck.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Winston offer for RVs?
Most RV camping Winston destinations are well equipped, especially the private parks clustered around Wildlife Safari. South Fork RV Park, Bar Run Golf and RV Resort, and On the River Golf and RV Resort offer 30 and 50 amp full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Susan Creek up on the North Umpqua is a more rustic Bureau of Land Management site with vault toilets and potable water but no hookups. Public dump stations are available at several locations along Interstate 5 in the Roseburg area, making it easy to reset between adventures.
blm.gov/visit/susan-creek-campgroundWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Winston?
More than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental Winston comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or sofa for extra sleepers, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a propane furnace, and either a built-in generator or shore-power capability. Most listings include cookware, dishes, linens, and outdoor camping chairs. Many newer rigs add a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, solar panels, and Wi-Fi boosters. Each listing's amenities section spells out exactly what is included, plus seatbelts and sleeping capacity, so you can match the rig to your crew.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winston%2C%20OregonWhat add-ons and features can I get with a campervan rental Winston?
Hosts offering campervan rental Winston and larger motorhomes typically have a menu of add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, generators, bike racks, kayak or paddleboard mounts, portable propane fire pits (helpful in wildfire season), and pet packages. Mileage policies vary by listing; many include 100 to 150 free miles per day with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Roseburg-Winston, but plenty offer delivery to Wildlife Safari RV Area, Bar Run, or even Eugene's airport. Check each listing's Extras section and bundle everything at checkout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winston%2C%20OregonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is handled entirely inside the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or cards to the host. You pay a portion at booking to lock in your dates, with the balance charged before pickup. Each listing shows a security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig), which is pre-authorized on your card and held separately from your booking payment, not charged unless there is damage or a policy issue at return. To keep things smooth, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, return the RV with fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and empty the holding tanks. The deposit releases back to your card within a few days of a clean return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Winston, OR?
Winston sits at the geographic sweet spot of southern Oregon, making it a perfect launchpad. Top picks for an RV road trip from Winston: Crater Lake National Park (about 80 miles east on Highway 138, with the bluest water you will ever see), the Oregon Coast at Bandon or Coos Bay (about 85 miles west via Highway 42, ideal for a family RV trip Winston), Diamond Lake and the Umpqua Hot Springs (about 75 miles northeast), Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (about 100 miles south), and Eugene plus Willamette wine country (about 70 miles north). Tip: combine Wildlife Safari, Crater Lake, and a coastal stop into a 4-day triangle for the ultimate southern Oregon RV camping Winston loop.
