Campgrounds and RV parks near Avella, PA

The signature stop is Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, a National Historic Landmark where a rock overhang was used for shelter thousands of years ago. Alongside the archaeological site, guests can walk through a reconstructed 16th-century Eastern Woodland Indian village, an 18th-century log cabin and trading post, and a 19th-century village with a church, one-room schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop. Hands-on activities include atlatl and tomahawk throwing, which tend to work well with kids. Raccoon Creek State Park adds a 101-acre lake for swimming, boating, and fishing, plus a Wildflower Reserve laced with 4.5 miles of trails. Tomlinson Run State Park pairs a swimming pool with a waterslide, disc golf, and mini golf. The KOA area is a jumping-off point for the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Washington Wild Things baseball, and day trips into Pittsburgh.

Camping in this region is strongly seasonal. Raccoon Creek State Park keeps its Sioux Rustic Campground open year-round, while its modern sites and cabins see peak use from spring through mid-fall. Tomlinson Run State Park's campground runs spring through fall, weather permitting, and its camper cabins are available from April through October. Meadowcroft itself is open seasonally from May through late November, which limits winter itineraries built around the site. Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot. Wildflower blooms at Raccoon Creek peak in late April and late August, swimming at the lake is realistic from late May through mid-September, and fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October. Summer weekends and the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays are the busiest windows, drawing heavy demand from the Pittsburgh metro area. Winter travel is possible but narrower in scope. The Sioux Rustic area stays open year-round for hardier campers, and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating are available at Raccoon Creek when conditions cooperate.

Roads into Avella are rural. GPS routing works, but the approach involves narrow country lanes and hills, so drivers of larger rigs should plan the last few miles carefully. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, and downloading maps ahead of time is recommended. Campground facilities vary widely. Raccoon Creek offers 172 modern tent and trailer sites plus cabins, with warm showers, flush toilets, and a dump station, while the separate Sioux Rustic area has more basic amenities. Tomlinson Run has 48 traditional sites plus camper cabins and yurts, with two bathhouses, showers, laundry, a convenience store, and a dump station. The KOA runs full-hookup pull-throughs with a seasonal pool. Grocery and dining options in Avella are limited, so stocking up in Washington or before arrival saves trips.
