The main RV season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from April through October. At Raccoon Creek State Park, E and F loops open in early April through mid-October, while A, B, C, and D loops operate from late May through mid-September, and the Sioux Rustic Campground remains open year-round with vault toilets and potable water, though access is not guaranteed during severe winter storms. Late spring and summer are the busiest windows. Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends draw heavy crowds from the Pittsburgh area, and holiday weekends at Raccoon Creek book out well in advance. Wildflower blooms in the park peak in late April and again in late August, and it is warm enough to swim at the lake from late May through mid-September. Fall is a strong shoulder season. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October across the western Pennsylvania hills, and weekday sites are easier to secure once school is back in session. Winter camping is possible at year-round sites, but expect snow, freezing temperatures, and reduced services.

Roads into the campgrounds south of Pittsburgh wind through wooded hills, and some final approaches are narrow. The KOA is reached from I-79 Exit 33 onto Route 40, then a right at the Pancake Inn Tavern onto Vance Station Road, and guests should have good brakes for the hilly terrain. The maximum pull-thru length is 88 feet. At Raccoon Creek State Park, sites accommodate tents and trailers up to 50 feet, with electric service available at 15, 20, 30, or 50 amp depending on the site. Pets are permitted in C and F campsite loops, so specify a pet-friendly site when booking. The campground features five central washhouses with flush toilets and warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and a playground. Cell service can be spotty in and around Pennsylvania state parks, so download maps and reservation details before arrival. Firewood should be purchased on site rather than transported in.
