The camping season in this corner of Pennsylvania runs primarily from mid-spring through mid-fall. Tomlinson Run State Park's campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting, with a contact station, convenience store, dump station, and two bathhouses with showers and laundry. Its swimming pool and mini-golf operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, matching the season at the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey. Raccoon Creek is the local exception for winter camping. Its main modern campground runs from the second Friday in April to mid-October, while the more primitive Sioux Rustic Campground stays open year-round with potable water and vault toilets, though access is not guaranteed during severe winter storms. Reservations are recommended, especially for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends when the park draws heavy crowds from the Pittsburgh area. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV travel. Wildflower blooms peak in late April and again in late August, fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October, and the lake is warm enough to swim from late May through mid-September; winter visitors can snowshoe, cross-country ski, and ice skate.

Terrain around Carnot-Moon is rolling and wooded, and campground access roads often follow ridgelines. The route into Tomlinson Run is somewhat narrow with a few curves but manageable for bigger rigs, though interior park roads twist and turn before opening onto roomy, level sites of grass and gravel. Facilities at the state parks are straightforward. Raccoon Creek's main campground has 172 modern tent and trailer sites with access to flush toilets, warm showers, five central washhouses, a dump station, and the option of electricity; the separate Sioux Rustic Campground offers potable water and non-flush toilets. Tomlinson Run's campground has 48 traditional sites with most offering electric hookups, and can accommodate rigs up to 50 feet. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania and West Virginia state parks, so downloading park maps before arrival is recommended.
