Camping near Ellwood City, Pennsylvania
Ellwood City sits in Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania, roughly 40 miles north of Pittsburgh and within easy reach of two major state parks. McConnells Mill State Park, in Lawrence County, encompasses 2,546 acres of the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, which is a National Natural Landmark, created by the draining of glacial lakes thousands of years ago, with steep sides and a valley floor littered with huge boulders. A short drive east, Moraine State Park is centered on the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur with 42 miles of shoreline.
Both parks anchor the local scene, but overnight stays happen almost entirely at private campgrounds. Moraine State Park does not allow tent or RV camping within the park, with the only exception being rustic shelters along the North Country Trail that must be reserved through the park office. McConnells Mill is a day-use park.
The closest private options for RV travelers include Valley View Campground, Hotel RV Beaver, Breakneck Campground, Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, and Indian Brave Campgrounds. Most campgrounds in this region feature fire rings, picnic tables, and access to drinking water, with several providing electric hookups for RVs and shower facilities for overnight guests.
Things to do around Ellwood City
The Slippery Rock Creek Gorge is the headline attraction. Scenic overlooks and waterfalls are popular natural attractions, and visitors can tour a historic gristmill and covered bridge built in the 1800s. McConnells Mill has two climbing and rappelling areas, both only recommended for equipped and experienced climbers, with the more difficult at Breakneck Bridge. Breakneck Campground sits close enough to offer easy access to McConnells Mill trails.
At Lake Arthur, families can swim, sail, paddle, and fish. Boats are limited to 20 horsepower maximum, and swimming is permitted at two beaches along the shores of Lake Arthur: Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore and Lakeview Beach on the North Shore. The North Country Trail passes through the park on its way from New York to North Dakota. Slippery Rock Creek is also a favorite for kayaking and whitewater paddling, and fishing is popular for trout and bass.

Western Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons, and most local private campgrounds run a spring-to-fall schedule, typically April through October. Public-park cabins run longer: at Moraine State Park, eleven modern cabins are available for rent year round, sleeping six people, with two bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, kitchen, dining and living area, and electric heat.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for hiking the gorge and paddling the creek, with mild temperatures and vivid foliage. Summer brings warm, humid weather and the biggest crowds; each year, over two million people visit Moraine State Park, making it Butler County's top attraction.
Winter is quieter and colder. Moraine State Park stays busy during winter, with Pleasant Valley and Sunken Garden trails part of a larger network open for cross-country skiing, approximately 20 miles of trails open to snowmobiling, and Lake Arthur open for ice fishing. Most private RV parks are closed or offer only limited services, and Slippery Rock Creek Gorge trails can be icy.

How to book campgrounds near Ellwood City
Reservations at Pennsylvania state park facilities go through a single system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance for most state park and state forest overnight stays, using the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, from 7:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Most campsites can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival.
For Moraine cabins, book early. Cabins are limited to eleven units, fill quickly for summer and holiday weekends, and are best reserved several months ahead.
Private campgrounds such as Valley View Campground, Hotel RV Beaver, Breakneck Campground, Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, and Indian Brave Campgrounds each handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holidays fill weeks out, so lock in dates before arrival rather than driving in.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain is wooded and rolling, with elevations in the region typically running between 800 and 1,200 feet. The area has four distinct seasons with humid summers and winter temperatures often below freezing, and woodland terrain and creekside locations characterize many camping areas. Sites tend to be shaded, and creeks or ponds are common features.
Facilities vary. Larger private grounds offer full hookups, laundry, and shower buildings, while McConnells Mill is day-use only and Moraine State Park offers overnight accommodations exclusively through organized group tenting and cabin rentals, with individual tent and RV camping prohibited throughout the park.
A few practical notes: cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download maps in advance. Slippery Rock Creek is a very swift and dangerous whitewater creek, and many people have drowned there. Do not swim in the creek.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ellwood%20City%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ellwood City?
Good news: a regular Pennsylvania (or out-of-state) Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ellwood City for the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license if your RV exceeds a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds, and almost every rental on the platform sits well below that. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely during booking. That's it: no CDL, no test, no DMV trip before your Ellwood City RV trip.

Every RV rental in Ellwood City booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on Slippery Rock Creek Gorge rather than worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (the level is set by RVezy, not the host), so you can dial up peace of mind for a family RV trip Ellwood City weekend or keep it lean for a quick solo getaway. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides serious financial backup if something unexpected happens on PA-65 or out at Lake Arthur.

Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the specific refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at Bear Run Campground, Rose Point Park, Cooper's Lake Campground, or a private property within roughly 30 to 60 miles of Ellwood City. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, check the host's per-mile delivery fee, and confirm your campground site number when you book.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/RaccoonCreekStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Ellwood City in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is prime RV season around Ellwood City, with June, September, and early October being the sweet spots. Summer highs run in the mid-80s and overnight lows in the mid-60s, making A/C-equipped rentals comfortable. Fall delivers brilliant Slippery Rock Creek Gorge foliage from late September through mid-October, and crowds thin out. Spring (April to May) is cool and wet but gorgeous when waterfalls run high at McConnells Mill. Winters can drop below 20 F with lake-effect snow, so most private campgrounds, including Bear Run, close from late October through mid-April. Insider tip: aim for the third weekend of September for foliage without the leaf-peeper traffic.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before, is renting in Ellwood City a good idea?
Yes, Ellwood City is a great spot for a first time renting an RV. The terrain around Lawrence and Butler counties is gently rolling rather than mountainous, the roads to Bear Run, Rose Point, and Moraine State Park are wide and well-maintained, and you're never far from a gas station or pull-off. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering brakes, leveling, propane, slide-outs, and tank dumping. If you're still nervous, choose a compact campervan rental Ellwood City listing or book delivery so the host sets everything up for you. Most renters say they relaxed within the first 20 minutes behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on I-376 heading to Pittsburgh or parked deep at Raccoon Creek State Park. Roadside covers tows, flat tires, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. If something mechanical pops up, RVezy's support team will coordinate with your host on next steps, including a possible swap or refund for lost trip time. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave Ellwood City and you'll travel with the confidence that someone always has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ellwood City RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, crossing state lines is welcome on most RVezy rentals, so an RV road trip from Ellwood City to Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline, West Virginia's New River Gorge, or New York's Allegany State Park is totally doable. Cross-border travel into Canada (think Niagara Falls, about 220 miles north) is allowed by many hosts, but confirm with the host before booking because insurance and registration paperwork must be in order. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: bring your passport and ask the host for the vehicle registration and a cross-border travel letter at least a week before departure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Ellwood City RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so plan smart. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8-12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6-9 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average (around $3.40-$3.80 per gallon recently), and stations along PA-65 and US-422 near Ellwood City are competitive. For a 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90-$120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz or GetGo on the south end of New Castle before heading north, prices there are often $0.10-$0.15 cheaper than stations closer to the campgrounds.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ellwood City?
For Pennsylvania state park campgrounds like Moraine, Raccoon Creek, and Pymatuning, reservations can be made up to 11 months ahead through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Summer weekends and fall foliage weeks sell out by early spring, so aim to lock in by February for July and August. Private campgrounds like Bear Run, Rose Point, and Cooper's Lake also book up fast, especially for holiday weekends and the Pennsic War in late July to early August. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set up an alert and check Tuesday mornings, cancellations frequently free up sites.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Ellwood City?
Driving an RV around Ellwood City is refreshingly manageable. The main routes, US-422, PA-65, and I-376 toward Pittsburgh, are wide, well-paved, and free of low-clearance hazards for standard-height RVs. Expect rolling hills, a few tight turns through historic downtown Ellwood City, and occasional construction zones managed by PennDOT. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls from late November through March, so most renters stick to April through October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches near McConnells Mill and Slippery Rock. Pro tip: avoid downtown Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill and Fort Pitt tunnels in a tall rig and use the I-376 bypass instead.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ellwood City?

Most private campgrounds also have a camp store, propane refills, and firewood for sale. For where to park an RV in Ellwood City overnight outside a campground, the Walmart on US-422 in New Castle has historically allowed it with manager permission, always call ahead. Dump stations are available at Bear Run and at Moraine State Park.

Many hosts also include a generator (great for boondocking near Allegheny National Forest), outdoor speakers, awnings, and starter kits with linens and kitchenware. Check the listing's amenity list and ask the host about Wi-Fi hotspots, cell coverage can dip in Slippery Rock Creek Gorge.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlWhat add-ons can I get with my Ellwood City RV rental?

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/moraine-state-park.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never directly to the host in cash. Most hosts also place a refundable security deposit hold (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) shortly before pickup, which is released within a few days of a clean return. To avoid any issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, tires, and tanks at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and waste-tank return instructions, and keep all communication in the RVezy app so there's a clear record. That's the whole secret to a smooth Ellwood City handoff.
