Campgrounds and RV parks near Evans City, PA

Lake Arthur inside Moraine State Park is the anchor attraction. The 3,225-acre lake supports boating, sailing, fishing, and two swimming beaches at Lakeview and Pleasant Valley, and visitors can bring their own boats with motors up to 20 horsepower. The park also carries a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail. McConnells Mill State Park, a short drive west, protects 2,546 acres of the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a National Natural Landmark with a restored 1800s gristmill, an 1874 covered bridge, waterfalls, and roughly 11 miles of rugged trails including Kildoo, Hells Hollow, Alpha Pass, and the challenging Slippery Rock Gorge Trail. Whitewater boating and rock climbing are permitted for experienced users. In Evans City itself, families often stop at the Evans City Cemetery, a filming location for the 1968 film Night of the Living Dead.

Peak camping season in Butler County runs from late spring through mid-fall. Private campgrounds open pools and run family programming from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and sites for holiday weekends fill months out. Moraine State Park receives up to two million visitors a year, with the busiest stretch running April through October. Spring brings wildflowers along Slippery Rock Creek and trout stocking on stocked waters, but trails in the gorge stay muddy and slick. Summer is warm and humid, with June typically the wettest month; expect afternoon thunderstorms. Fall offers cooler nights, lower crowds, and strong foliage through October. Winter camping is limited. Most private campgrounds close or reduce services, though Moraine's eleven modern cabins remain available year-round and the park hosts iceboating and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Snow typically falls from November through March, averaging about 34 inches per year in the Butler area.

The terrain around Evans City is rolling farmland and mixed hardwood forest, with private campgrounds typically sitting on wooded acreage rather than open fields. Expect family-oriented amenities across the private parks in the area, including heated pools, playgrounds, camp stores, dog areas, and full-hookup sites at most locations. Cell service is generally reliable near the I-79 corridor but can drop inside the deeper sections of Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. Roads into McConnells Mill are narrow and steep in places, so large rigs should day-trip in with a tow vehicle rather than attempt the gorge access roads. Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks, and visitor hours run between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. at state park campgrounds and cabins. Firewood brought from out of state is prohibited to slow the spread of spotted lanternfly and other pests.
