Camping near Hickory, Pennsylvania
Hickory sits in Mount Pleasant Township, Washington County, in the rolling farmland of southwestern Pennsylvania. The village is a short drive southwest of Pittsburgh, which puts RV travelers within easy reach of both urban attractions and a cluster of state parks along the Ohio and West Virginia borders.
The closest full-service RV base is Raccoon Creek State Park, located at 3000 State Route 18 in Hookstown, north of Hickory. The 7,572-acre park features the 101-acre Raccoon Lake and traces its origins to a Recreational Demonstration Area operated by the National Park Service in the 1930s. Just across the state line, Tomlinson Run State Park sits along the stream from which it gets its name, within a mile of the Ohio River in West Virginia's northern panhandle.
Other options in the corridor include the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, Hotel RV West Alexander, and Ernies Acres Campground, which round out a mix of private RV parks and public campgrounds suitable for weekend or multi-night stays.
Things to do around Hickory
At Raccoon Creek State Park, the lake anchors most of the recreation. The park's Wildflower Reserve contains one of the most diverse stands of wildflowers in western Pennsylvania, with more than 700 species along 4.5 miles of trails through oak-hickory forest, pine plantations, meadows, and riparian habitat. Swimming, boating, and fishing on Raccoon Lake fill out summer days, and more than 19 miles of hiking trails wind through the park.
At Tomlinson Run State Park, the developed area offers picnicking, boating, miniature golf, basketball and volleyball courts, swimming, a campground, and a group camp. The 30-acre lake and stocked ponds hold bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout.
Pittsburgh is a short drive for day trips: professional sports, the Strip District markets, and museum row all sit within about an hour of Hickory. Washington, PA, adds smaller attractions closer to base.

How to book campsites near Hickory
Pennsylvania state park sites are reserved through the state's centralized system. Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and reservations can be made online through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757) from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Late arrivals should check at the contact station or campground entrance for instructions.
For Tomlinson Run in West Virginia, booking rules differ. Reservations can be made through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system online or by calling the park directly, with both electric and non-electric sites available. Book well in advance for summer weekends and holidays.
Private campgrounds including the KOA, Hotel RV West Alexander, and Ernies Acres Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Book cabins and holiday weekends earliest, since those sell out first.
What to expect on-site
State park sites in this area are wooded and generally spacious, with a mix of electric and non-electric options. Raccoon Creek's 172 modern tent and trailer campsites have access to flush facilities, warm showers, and the option of electricity. The campground includes five central washhouses, a playground, and a sanitary dump station. Pets are permitted only in C and F loops, so families traveling with dogs should check loop assignments at booking.
At Tomlinson Run, expect a 48-site campground with a contact station, convenience store, dump station, and two bathhouses featuring showers and laundry facilities. Most sites offer 30-amp electric hookups, with a handful of 50-amp sites. Five camper cabins are available April through October.
Cell service is unpredictable in and around many area state parks, so download park maps before arrival. Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania from outside the state is prohibited due to invasive-pest quarantine rules; buy local firewood on or near site.
