Campgrounds near Houston, Pennsylvania
Houston is a small borough in Washington County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, about a half-hour drive south of downtown Pittsburgh along the I-79 corridor. The area sits in rolling countryside crossed by the Montour Trail and dotted with covered bridges, giving RV travelers a rural base that stays close to city services, fuel, and grocery.
Most RV options cluster within a short drive of town. Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey sits in wooded hills roughly a half-hour south of Pittsburgh and offers full-hookup pull-through sites, cabins, and a seasonal pool. Hotel RV West Alexander and Ernies Acres Campground provide smaller, quieter alternatives closer to the West Virginia line, while Firehouse RV Campgrounds serves travelers looking for a simple full-hookup stop.
For a true state-park experience, Sioux - Raccoon Creek State Park lies northwest of Houston in southern Beaver County. The 7,572-acre park surrounds 101-acre Raccoon Lake and offers modern loops with electric sites plus rustic tenting, making it a strong pick for families splitting time between hookup camping and hiking.
Things to do near Houston
The Montour Trail passes close to Houston and provides roughly 47 miles of level rail-trail on its main line, with branches pushing the network past 60 miles for biking, walking, and jogging. It connects to the Panhandle Trail west toward the Ohio line and to the Great Allegheny Passage, so it is an easy first-day activity for families settling into a rig.
Raccoon Creek State Park adds a swimming beach on Raccoon Lake, boat rentals, and an extensive trail network. The park's Wildflower Reserve holds one of the most diverse stands of wildflowers in western Pennsylvania, with 4.5 miles of trails through oak-hickory forest, meadows, and riparian habitats.
Day trips from a Houston base include downtown Pittsburgh museums and stadiums, Meadowcroft Rockshelter in nearby Avella, The Meadows Racetrack and Casino, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater about two hours east in the Laurel Highlands.

The area follows a humid continental pattern with four distinct seasons. The main camping window at Raccoon Creek State Park and most private parks runs from April through October, which lines up with peak reservation demand. Late spring and early fall bring the most comfortable RV weather, with warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity than midsummer.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day draw heavy crowds from the Pittsburgh metro, and popular loops at Raccoon Creek fill quickly. Wildflower blooms peak in late April and again in late August, and fall foliage is typically strongest in mid-October.
Winter camping is limited but possible. The Sioux Rustic Campground at Raccoon Creek stays open year-round for hardier campers, while private parks in the Houston area often reduce services or close entirely between late October and early April. Snow, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles on narrow access roads are the main planning concerns.

How to book
Pennsylvania state park campsites, including those at Raccoon Creek State Park, are reserved through the state's official reservation system operated in partnership with ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and are held to noon on the day of arrival. Cabins book earliest and are typically gone months ahead for summer weekends, so aim to reserve at least three months out for peak dates.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey books directly through the KOA website or by phone and generally requires a deposit at time of booking. Smaller operations such as Hotel RV West Alexander, Ernies Acres Campground, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds are best reached by phone to confirm hookup type, rig-length limits, and cancellation terms.
What to expect
Terrain around Houston is hilly, and access roads to some campgrounds are narrow and winding. Drivers of longer fifth wheels and Class A rigs should scout the final approach and take highway exits slowly. Interstate noise is audible at parks close to I-70 and I-79.
Expect standard eastern hardwood shade, gravel or paved pads, and a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and rustic sites depending on the park. Cell service is reliable near town but unpredictable inside Raccoon Creek State Park, so download park maps in advance.
Bring leveling blocks, insect repellent for summer stays, and layers year-round. Firewood is often sold on-site, and quiet hours are strictly enforced at state park loops, with noise restrictions in place between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Expect to pay around $90 to $175 per night for a travel trailer, $140 to $225 for a Class C motorhome, and $175 to $300 for a luxury Class A. Travel trailers tend to be the cheapest RV rental Houston PA travelers can find, especially if you already have a tow-capable vehicle. visitpa.com/things-to-do/campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Houston, Pennsylvania?
Good news: your regular Pennsylvania driver's license is all you need for nearly every RV rental in Houston, PA. The Commonwealth only requires a Non-Commercial Class B license for vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) above 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans on RVezy fall comfortably under that limit. You must be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your identification (ID) digitally during booking. Visiting from outside the US? pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-vehicle-services/driver-services.htmlWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Houston, PA?
Every RV rental in Houston, PA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit Interstate 79 with confidence. You will not see a cancellation policy on individual listings because the same RVezy policy applies across every booking. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center, just a click away during checkout, so you can lock in dates without stress.

You are never alone on the road. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Houston, PA RV trip?

Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, and most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and tow-behind travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle's MPG (usually a 20 to 30 percent hit). For a weekend run from Houston to Ohiopyle and back (about 140 miles round trip), expect roughly $50 to $80 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz or GetGo stations along US Route 19 in Washington before heading east into the Laurel Highlands, where rural prices can run higher.

For Pennsylvania state parks like Raccoon Creek and Ohiopyle, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) opens reservations 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends, especially holiday weekends, fill up fast. Aim to book three to six months ahead for summer Saturdays, and one to two months ahead for spring and fall weekends. Take it slow on Route 519 and rural backroads, which can be narrow and winding. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from November through March, so check forecasts and avoid mountain routes during storms. Pro tip: avoid the Pittsburgh I-376 Squirrel Hill Tunnel area during rush hour (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM) when heading north for a city day trip in your motorhome rental Houston PA pickup.

Most parks include access to an on-site dump station with your stay. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank at the campground entrance before heading to your site, and dump waste tanks on the way out to save a step. The deposit amount is shown clearly on each listing before you book. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off. It is the easiest way to keep your deposit refund quick and stress-free after your family RV trip Houston PA adventure wraps up.

Winter RV camping near Houston, PA can be genuinely magical, with snowy Laurel Highlands views, quiet campgrounds, and cozy nights by the heater. January lows can dip into the teens and 20s degrees Fahrenheit, so look for listings marketed as four-season or winterized, with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working propane furnace. Book a campground with shore power (30 or 50-amp) like Washington KOA so you can run electric heaters alongside the furnace. Add an extra propane tank, RV-safe antifreeze for the tanks, and an insulated water hose. Pro tip: Ohiopyle in winter is stunning for ice formations along the Youghiogheny, and many private parks offer steep off-season rates, making winter a smart-money Houston PA RV trip.
