Campgrounds and RV parks near Koppel, PA

Water activities anchor most trips. Moraine State Park features 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, a warm-water fishery that is also strong for sailing and boating, with species including walleye, muskellunge, catfish and bass. Boats up to 20 horsepower motors are permitted on Lake Arthur, and swimming is permitted at two beaches along the shore. Hikers and cyclists have plenty of ground to cover. Raccoon Creek State Park has 27 miles of hiking trails plus 11 miles of multi-use trails for mountain bikers, horses, and snowmobiles, and Moraine includes a 7-mile paved bike trail that runs along the north shore of Lake Arthur. For a change of pace, McConnells Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a national natural landmark with a valley floor littered with huge boulders, and a gristmill built in the 1800s open for tours.

The main RV season in western Pennsylvania runs from mid-spring through fall. At Raccoon Creek State Park, the campground contains 172 sites divided into six loops: E and F open in early April through mid-October, while A, B, C, and D loops operate from late May through mid-September. Sioux Rustic Campground is open year-round, giving cold-weather options for self-contained rigs. Summer is the busiest window and books earliest. Weekends at private parks near Lake Arthur and along the Beaver River fill quickly once school ends, especially around the July 4th and Labor Day holidays. Spring brings variable weather but strong wildflower displays: blankets of bluebells, violets, and trilliums appear each spring at Raccoon Creek State Park, and the 314-acre wildflower reserve has 4.5 miles of trails and more than 700 plant species. Fall offers cooler nights, foliage color, and lighter crowds through mid-October, after which most modern loops close and hunting seasons open on adjacent state game lands. Winter camping is limited to rustic and year-round loops.

Most modern state park loops near Koppel accommodate larger rigs. At Raccoon Creek, sites accommodate tents and trailers up to 50 feet, with electric hookups available on many sites, each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground features five central washhouses with flush toilets and warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and a playground. Pet rules vary by loop and facility. At Raccoon Creek, pets are permitted only in loops C and F, and private parks in the area generally allow leashed pets with some breed restrictions. Roads through the area are a mix of interstate (I-376, I-79, I-80), state routes, and narrow county roads with steep grades near the Slippery Rock Creek gorge. Firewood should be purchased locally rather than transported across state lines. Cell service is generally good near Koppel and along the interstates but can drop in wooded valleys inside the state parks.
