Camping near New Castle, Pennsylvania
New Castle sits in Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania, roughly 50 miles north of Pittsburgh and close to the Ohio border. The area works as a practical base for RV trips built around McConnells Mill State Park and Moraine State Park, which surrounds the 3,225-acre Lake Arthur in western Pennsylvania. Both parks are day-use focused for RV travelers, so overnight stays happen at private campgrounds a short drive from the trailheads and boat launches.
RV renters typically choose between Valley View Campground, Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, Breakneck Campground, Rocky Springs Campground, and Coopers Lake Campground. Rose Point Park sits along Slippery Rock Creek near McConnells Mill and Moraine State Parks, and Coopers Lake Campground occupies a wooded property with a small lake and open fields within easy reach of the region's state parks.
Expect rolling farmland, hemlock forest, and creek gorges rather than mountain wilderness. Sites range from full-hookup pull-throughs to primitive tent pads, and most parks cater to families rather than adults-only travelers.
Things to do near New Castle
The main draw is Slippery Rock Creek Gorge at McConnells Mill State Park, a national natural landmark with steep sides, a valley floor of huge boulders, and a restored 19th-century gristmill open for tours. The park has designated climbing and rappelling areas at Rim Road and Breakneck Bridge, and the creek is popular for kayaking and whitewater paddling, especially in spring and fall. Anglers work the creek for trout and bass.
At Moraine State Park, Lake Arthur has 42 miles of shoreline and supports swimming, sailing, and paddleboarding, with a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail running through the park. Families based at Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping or Valley View Campground can reach both parks within a short drive, and the Grove City outlets and Living Treasures Animal Park add rainy-day options.

36° / 19°F 70 mmCold and snowy; most private campgrounds closed
The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs roughly April through October. Private campgrounds follow that window closely, with Coopers Lake open spring through fall and Rose Point Park offering a longer cabin season around its main RV season. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and the best creek flows for paddling.
Summer is the peak booking window. More than one million visitors reach Moraine State Park each year, and traffic concentrates in the warm months. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, and the Pennsic War at Coopers Lake in late July and early August pulls in thousands of attendees, tightening availability at nearby campgrounds.
Winter sees most private campgrounds close or limit operations to cabins. Roads through the gorge can ice up, and RV renters generally shift to state-park cabins rather than hookup sites from December through February.
How to book campsites near New Castle
Private campgrounds near New Castle, including Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, Valley View Campground, Breakneck Campground, Rocky Springs Campground, and Coopers Lake Campground, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and the summer festival window at Coopers Lake book earliest, so lock in dates several months out for July and August stays.
For state-park lodging, reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Moraine State Park offers overnight accommodations exclusively through organized group tenting and cabin rentals, and individual tent camping and RV camping are prohibited throughout the park, so RV travelers should plan on a private campground and use the state parks for day trips.
What to expect on the ground
Cell service is generally reliable near New Castle and along US 422, though it thins inside Slippery Rock Gorge. Grocery runs, propane, and RV supplies are easiest in New Castle itself or in Slippery Rock borough. Most private campgrounds in the area offer full hookups, laundry, a camp store, and a pool or lake for kids.
Terrain matters when driving a rental. Roads into McConnells Mill are narrow and winding, and large Class A rigs are better parked at the campground with day trips made in a tow vehicle. Trail hazards in the gorge include uneven and rocky footing, ticks and mosquitoes in summer, and the occasional timber rattlesnake, so pack accordingly and keep food secured at the site.
Quiet hours, pet rules, and campfire policies vary by campground. Confirm dog policies at booking if traveling with pets.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my New Castle RV rental?
Booking is low-risk, so go ahead and lock in those summer dates. RVezy (not the host) sets a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking, including a grace period right after you book so you have breathing room if plans shift. The exact refund depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel and the circumstances. You won't see cancellation terms on individual listings because this is an RVezy-wide process, which keeps things consistent. Book early to secure the best motorhome rental New Castle has available during fall foliage season, and you'll still have flexibility if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New Castle RV trip?
Yes, and Lawrence County is genuinely dog-friendly. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental New Castle options on RVezy, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing listings. Once you've got your rig, your pup will love Moraine State Park, which welcomes leashed pets on most trails around Lake Arthur's 42 miles of shoreline. McConnells Mill State Park also welcomes leashed dogs along the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge trails. Most local campgrounds, including Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping and Bear Run Campground, allow pets at RV sites. Message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size notes and ask about their cleaning expectations.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/MoraineStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in New Castle?
Yes, RV delivery in New Castle is one of the most popular options on RVezy and is perfect if you're new to RVing. Many hosts will drive the rig directly to Rose Point Park, Bear Run Campground, Moraine State Park, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. To find delivery-ready listings, use the Delivery filter when searching for your RV rental in New Castle, PA. Delivery fees are set by each host and depend on the RV type and distance. Delivery is especially worth it for fifth wheels and larger Class A motorhomes if you'd rather skip the tow.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Castle,%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive on a New Castle RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You've got serious road trip range from New Castle, which sits at the crossroads of I-376, I-79, and Route 422. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100-150 free miles per day) and charge a small per-mile fee beyond that, while some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer routes. Each listing shows the host's mileage policy clearly before you book. Popular drives include Pittsburgh (about 55 miles south), Lake Erie's Presque Isle (about 90 miles north), Cleveland, OH (about 75 miles west), Niagara Falls (about 170 miles north), and Cook Forest State Park (about 90 miles northeast). If you're planning a multi-state loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near New Castle, PA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in New Castle. A few favorites: Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping sits just north of town on Old US-422 with full hookups and big-rig pull-throughs; Bear Run Campground near Portersville offers wooded sites close to Moraine State Park; and Pymatuning State Park Campground (about an hour north) is a lakeside classic with great fishing. Moraine State Park itself offers organized group tenting and modern cabins, while McConnells Mill State Park is day-use only. Weekday arrivals make grabbing a premium spot much easier.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PymatuningStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from New Castle?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from New Castle. June through August brings warm days in the 80s°F, perfect for Lake Arthur swimming and Pymatuning boating. September and early October are arguably the best of all: cool 60s-70s°F days, fewer bugs, and brilliant fall foliage across the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge and Cook Forest. May offers fresh greenery and quieter campgrounds. Winters in Lawrence County regularly dip below freezing from December to February with occasional lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close, though a handful stay open year-round for cold-weather adventurers. Book fall foliage weekends 2-3 months ahead.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never rented an RV before. How does the New Castle experience work?
First time renting an RV? You'll love how guided the process is. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, water system, slide-outs, awning, dump procedure, and driving tips specific to their rig. You can message your host anytime through the platform with questions before, during, and after your trip, and RVezy's customer support team is available the whole way. New Castle is a great first-timer destination because the roads around Lawrence County are flat to gently rolling, with easy highway access via I-376 and Route 422. Start with a 3-night trip to Moraine State Park before tackling longer adventures.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/MoraineStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my New Castle RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-79 or a battery issue at your campsite is handled with one phone call. The roadside team can dispatch help for towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery anywhere across western Pennsylvania and beyond. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app if you need help troubleshooting a quirk specific to their rig (like a finicky water pump or generator). Snap a few photos of the propane shutoff, breaker panel, and water valves at pickup so you can quickly share them with support if questions come up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Castle RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are allowed and they're a big part of the appeal of RVing here. New Castle sits within easy reach of Ohio (about 15 minutes west), West Virginia, and New York, and many hosts allow Canadian travel for trips to Niagara Falls or Toronto, where your protection coverage still applies. Confirm cross-border plans with your host through RVezy messaging before booking, since some prefer to keep their rig stateside. Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state routes from New Castle include the Great Lakes loop (Erie to Cleveland to Sandusky) and the Allegheny circuit through northwest PA. Bring your passport if Canada is on the itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a New Castle RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, so it pays to plan. Class C motorhomes near New Castle typically get 8-12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs land around 6-10 MPG, campervans push 14-20 MPG, and if you tow a travel trailer with your own truck, expect a noticeable drop from your usual MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices generally run above the national average, while crossing into Ohio (just 15 minutes west of New Castle) often saves you 20-40 cents per gallon. Fill up in Hermitage or Sharon before heading north, and use a fuel-price app to spot the cheapest stations along Route 422 and I-79 during your campervan rental New Castle adventure.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Castle?
For Pennsylvania state parks like Moraine, Pymatuning, and McConnells Mill, you can book in advance through the PA State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) genuinely do sell out months ahead. For private campgrounds like Rose Point Park and Bear Run, booking 4-8 weeks ahead is usually plenty for peak season. Fall foliage weekends in late September and early October are the second-busiest window, so aim 2-3 months out. Lock in your RV rental in New Castle, PA first, then book the campground the same day so your dates align perfectly. Mid-week stays almost always have availability.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around New Castle?
New Castle is one of the easier western Pennsylvania cities to drive an RV through. The terrain is gently rolling foothills (elevations roughly 800-1,200 feet), and the main routes (I-376, I-79, US-422, and PA-65) are wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. Watch for a few low railroad underpasses in the old downtown grid, so trust your GPS routing and stick to highways with larger rigs. Winter can bring lake-effect snow between December and March, so if you're booking a cold-weather trip, ask about snow tires and travel during daylight. If your motorhome rental New Castle trip heads south, avoid downtown Pittsburgh's tunnels during rush hour; take the I-79 bypass via I-279 instead.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near New Castle?
Local campgrounds around New Castle are well set up for RVs of all sizes. Most private parks like Rose Point Park and Bear Run offer full hookups (30 or 50-amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds (Pymatuning and others in the region) typically offer electric sites with a central dump station and potable water fill, plus modern restrooms with showers. Fill your fresh water tank before you leave the campground at Pymatuning since some of the more scenic pull-offs along Lake Arthur don't have spigots.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's inside the RVs available to rent in New Castle?
You'll feel right at home. RVs available for rent in New Castle range from compact campervans (Class B) with a bed, kitchenette, and wet bath, up to Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels that sleep 6-10 with full kitchens, residential refrigerators, bathrooms with showers, multiple slide-outs, and TVs. Most rigs include propane stoves, microwaves, air conditioning, furnaces, and freshwater tanks. Generators are common on motorhomes, while travel trailers typically depend on shore power or shore-power adapters. Each listing on RVezy shows exactly what's included, sleeps count, and any extras. Use the Sleeps filter to match the RV to your group size, and the RV Type filter to find the perfect family RV trip New Castle setup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Castle,%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get with my New Castle RV rental?
Lots of hosts make your trip easier with optional add-ons you can select at booking. Common extras near New Castle include kitchen kits (pots, pans, dishes), bedding and linen packages, camping chairs, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and portable fire pits. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, especially for fifth wheels heading to Moraine State Park. Each add-on has a transparent price listed right on the booking page, so there are no surprises. Pickup is usually at the host's location, and many will meet you at the campground instead. Book the linen and kitchen kits together; it's usually cheaper than buying disposables and you'll save trunk space for hiking gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Castle,%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in New Castle, PA on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, so there's no cash exchange with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount varies by listing and is shown clearly before you confirm) to cover any incidentals like minor damage or excess mileage, and it's released back to your card after the trip wraps up cleanly. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take date-stamped photos inside and out, and return the rig in the same condition with the same fuel level. Keep all fuel and dump receipts in your RVezy messages.
