Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakland, PA

Oakland is a small census-designated place in Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania, set on a hill above the Shenango River just north of New Castle. It sits in the southeastern corner of Union Township, bordered to the south and east by the city of New Castle, the Lawrence county seat. The area puts RV travelers within roughly a half-hour drive of two of western Pennsylvania's most-used outdoor destinations: McConnells Mill State Park and Moraine State Park, both anchored in nearby Portersville. Camping in this corridor is handled almost entirely by private campgrounds, because Moraine does not offer traditional drive-in tent or RV camping and McConnells Mill operates as a day-use park without campsites. The closest private options to Oakland include Valley View Campground in Wampum, plus a cluster of well-known parks around Portersville and Slippery Rock: Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, Breakneck Campground, Rocky Springs Campground, and Coopers Lake Campground. Together they cover everything from full-hookup pull-through RV sites to primitive tent areas and cabins.

Private campgrounds in the Oakland area are booked directly through each operator's website or by phone. Valley View Campground, Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping, Breakneck Campground, Rocky Springs Campground, and Coopers Lake Campground all take reservations directly, and summer weekends, holiday weekends, and Halloween-themed events at family-oriented parks sell out earliest. Note that Coopers Lake operates largely as an event venue and hosts large gatherings such as the Pennsic War and the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival, so general public availability is tied to specific weekends. For state-park cabins and overnight facilities, the Pennsylvania DCNR uses a central reservation system, accessed online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance.
