Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakwood, PA

McConnells Mill State Park is the headline attraction. The 2,546-acre park protects the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge with hiking trails, a restored 19th-century gristmill, a covered bridge, whitewater boating, and rock-climbing areas along the gorge walls. Trailheads sit a short drive from Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping and Breakneck Campground. Moraine State Park adds 3,225-acre Lake Arthur with a 20-horsepower boating limit, a paved seven-mile lakeside bike trail, and two swimming beaches open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Farther out, families can visit the New Wilmington Amish community, the shops in Volant, and the Grove City Premium Outlets just off I-79.

Northwestern Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summer is the busiest camping window, with July highs averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit and humidity often running above 80 percent. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill early at family-oriented parks like Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping and Valley View Campground. Spring and fall bring lower crowds and cooler nights. Slippery Rock Creek runs high in spring, drawing whitewater paddlers, while September and October deliver hardwood color across the gorge. Rocky Springs Campground operates a defined season from May through mid-October, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm openings before arriving. Winter is quiet. January average lows drop near 19 degrees Fahrenheit and snow is a regular feature, so most private campgrounds close or shift to seasonal-only operations. Pennsylvania state parks stay open year-round for day use, but overnight tent and RV camping is not offered at McConnells Mill or at Moraine, which provides cabins only.

Sites in this area range from full-hookup pull-throughs suited to large rigs to primitive tent pads in the woods. Rocky Springs Campground offers 127 sites, including full hookups and water-and-electric sites, and can accommodate RVs up to 44 feet on a wooded 100-acre property. Rose Point Park Cabins and Camping features amenity-rich family camping close to McConnells Mill, though sites can feel close together during peak weekends. Breakneck Campground leans rustic, with tent sites and cabins near the McConnells Mill boundary. Valley View Campground offers grassy shaded RV sites and cabins in the Wampum area. Cell service is inconsistent in and around the gorge. Pennsylvania asks campers not to move firewood long distances between counties, to limit forest-pest spread.
