Campgrounds and RV parks near Sharon, PA

Water recreation drives most trips to the Shenango Valley. Shenango River Lake permits unlimited horsepower boating and has six free boat launches for access, with plentiful deer, turkey and small game in the surrounding woods and excellent opportunities to spot osprey and eagles. Anglers fish for bass, walleye, muskellunge and a variety of panfish. On-shore options are just as varied. The nearby Bayview Off-Road Vehicle Area provides over 200 acres of riding trails for ATVs and dirt bikes, the Chestnut Run Swim Beach offers an area for swimming and sunbathing with no lifeguard on duty, and the Trout Island Trail in Sharpsville is a 5 mile paved trail that accommodates walking, running and cycling. The Shenango Water Trail provides 7.5 miles of scenic river corridor for paddlers, with three access points between Kidds Mill Park and Big Bend. Families staying at resort-style parks such as Adventure Bound Shenango or Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Shenango Valley will find pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities on site.

The Sharon area has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. The prime RV window runs from late spring through early fall, when campgrounds are fully staffed and lake activities are in full swing. Main Shenango Recreation Area campground sites 1-330 typically open May through September, so trips outside those months require careful planning at private parks that stay open longer. Summer is peak season, with warm days, active swim beaches, and the busiest boat traffic on the lake. Reserve early for holiday weekends. Fall brings cooler nights, strong hardwood color across the lake shoreline, and quieter campgrounds. The lake is shallow and water levels generally drop throughout the summer, especially after the Fourth of July, depending upon rainfall, which can affect boat ramp usability late in the season. Winter camping is limited but not impossible. The Old Duck Loop, campsites 192-225, at Shenango Recreation Area is open all year, though services are reduced and cold-weather RV precautions are required. Private parks around Sharon generally shorten their season between late October and April.

Public sites at Shenango tend to be spacious but variable. Electric hookups are available at many but not all sites, and individual sites do not have water spigots, so campers either arrive with water on board or fill up at the entrance station or dump station. Flush toilets, drinking water, showers and a dump station are provided, along with playgrounds, a horseshoe pit and a boat ramp. Big-rig travelers should note that the Army Corps facility accommodates everything from tent camping to large RVs, but shade and tree cover can complicate satellite reception. Private resort parks near Sharon lean toward full hookups, laundry, pools, and family programming, with tighter site spacing than the federal campground. Cell coverage is generally acceptable in and around Sharon and Hermitage but drops in wooded lake loops, so download maps and reservations before leaving town.
