Campgrounds and RV parks near South New Castle, PA

Lake Arthur is the anchor for warm-weather activity. The lake has ten public boat launches with a 20-horsepower motor limit, sailboats, kayaks, canoes, motorboats, and pontoons available to rent from Crescent Bay, and sailing races and regattas run throughout summer. Two designated swimming beaches serve the lake: Lakeview Beach on the north shore and Pleasant Valley Beach on the south, and Lake Arthur holds largemouth bass, northern pike, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill. On land, the park offers 71 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. At McConnells Mill, two sanctioned climbing and rappelling areas draw climbers to Rim Road and the more advanced Breakneck Bridge, and the covered bridge, waterfalls, and gristmill tours are family favorites.

Spring brings mild days, wildflowers along Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, and steady rainfall that keeps the McConnells Mill waterfalls running full. Trails can be muddy in March and early April, and some private campground amenities such as pools and camp stores open on a phased schedule that typically starts around mid-April. Summer is peak season. Moraine State Park draws more than a million visitors annually, so trails and beaches are busy, and private RV parks near Portersville fill weekends well in advance. Expect warm, humid afternoons with pop-up thunderstorms. Fall delivers the region's best conditions for RV travel: cool nights, drier days, and hardwood color that peaks in mid to late October across the gorge. Winter is cold and snowy. Many private campgrounds close or reduce services from late fall through March, while eleven modern lakefront cabins at Moraine State Park are available year round for travelers who want a heated base for cross-country skiing or ice fishing.

Most private parks in the area offer full RV hookups, dump stations, and family amenities, with a mix of pull-thru and back-in sites, 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, WiFi, restrooms, showers, laundry, and camp stores. Cell coverage is generally solid across Lawrence and Butler counties and weaker inside the gorge. Plan for Pennsylvania firewood guidance. The DCNR urges campers to buy local firewood to avoid spreading non-native pests such as the emerald ash borer, and any unburned wood should be left on site rather than transported home. Campground stores typically sell local bundles. Terrain is rolling farmland and hardwood forest. Roads to the campgrounds are paved and RV-friendly, though the drive down into McConnells Mill itself is steep and narrow and better handled in a tow vehicle.
