Campgrounds and RV parks near Thompsonville, PA

Raccoon Creek State Park is the main outdoor draw within an easy drive. The park covers 7,572 acres and centers on 101-acre Raccoon Lake, with hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, and boating available in season. The 314-acre Wildflower Reserve in the eastern section of the park protects one of the most diverse stands of wildflowers in western Pennsylvania, with more than 700 identified plant species. Closer to Thompsonville, day trips into Pittsburgh open up the city's museums, sports venues, and riverfront trails. Washington County itself is known for its network of covered bridges, antique stores, and flea markets along rural highways, and The Meadows Racetrack and Casino is a short drive from the KOA.

The main camping season in southwestern Pennsylvania runs from spring through fall. At Raccoon Creek State Park the modern E and F loops open in early April and close in mid-October, while the A, B, C, and D loops run from late May through mid-September. The Sioux Rustic Campground stays open year-round. Private parks like the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey typically run longer shoulder seasons, with pool access limited to Memorial Day through Labor Day. Wildflower blooms at Raccoon Creek peak in late April and again in August. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and it is also the wettest stretch of the year. Lake swimming is realistic from late May through mid-September, when the 500-foot public beach is open. Fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October and is a strong reason to book a shoulder-season trip. Winter visits are possible for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating at Raccoon Creek, though most private RV parks scale back services and the Pittsburgh area can stay below freezing all day on many days from November into April.

Expect a mix of highway-adjacent RV parks and forested state-park loops. The Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey sits on wooded hills roughly 28 miles south of Pittsburgh, with pull-through sites up to about 88 feet, 50-amp full hookups, a seasonal pool, and a playground. Access roads are narrow, steep, and hilly, so larger rigs should approach slowly and confirm site fit at check-in. Recommended access is via I-79 exit 33. At Raccoon Creek State Park, the 172 modern tent and trailer campsites are split across multiple loops with flush toilets, warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and optional electric hookups. Pets are permitted only in the C and F loops, and cell service can be unpredictable, so downloading the park map before arrival is a good idea.
