Campgrounds near Washington, Pennsylvania
Washington sits in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh along the I-79 and I-70 corridors. The area works well as a stopover for RVers traveling between the Northeast and Midwest, and as a base for exploring Washington and Greene counties. Terrain is rolling Appalachian foothills with wooded ridges, farmland, and creek valleys.
Lodging options range from private RV parks oriented to highway travelers to a state park campground in a remote rural setting. Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, just off I-79, is the closest full-service RV park and a convenient choice for short stays and pull-through access. Hotel RV West Alexander, Ernies Acres Campground, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds offer additional private options in the surrounding countryside. For a public-land experience, Ryerson Station State Park lies in Greene County in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, near the West Virginia border, roughly an hour southwest of Washington, with a mix of full-hookup, electric, and tent sites.
Things to do near Washington, PA
Washington County is home to 23 historic covered bridges, the second most of any county in Pennsylvania, and self-guided driving tours connect many of them through scenic backroads. Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village in Avella is a National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest known sites of human habitation in North America, with a 19th-century outdoor village and costumed interpreters in summer. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington offers vintage streetcar rides plus a display building of restored cars. Other stops include The Meadows Racetrack and Casino, Tanger Outlets, the Duncan and Miller Glass Museum, and Mingo Creek County Park, which holds two more covered bridges. Ryerson Station State Park adds hiking trails and a seasonal swimming pool.

The area has four distinct seasons. Summer is the peak camping window, with warm, humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest demand for sites at the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey. Many seasonal attractions, including Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, are open in the May through October window.
Spring brings unsettled weather, wet ground, and gradually warming temperatures. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and peak foliage in mid to late October. The Covered Bridge Festival, held the third weekend in September each year, is regarded as a signature event in the area and the official start to the fall season, and it can fill nearby campgrounds.
Winter is cold and snowy. Ryerson Station State Park keeps its 35-site tent and trailer campground open year round, with modern restrooms and showers available year round, but private campgrounds in the area may close or reduce services, and rural access roads can be challenging for larger rigs.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

How to book campgrounds near Washington, PA
Private parks use their own booking channels. Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey takes reservations through the KOA website or app. Hotel RV West Alexander, Ernies Acres Campground, and Firehouse RV Campgrounds typically reserve by phone or through their own websites; call ahead to confirm rig length, hookups, and seasonal hours.
Ryerson Station State Park is booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Full-hookup, modern electric, and modern tent only sites can be reserved for today and up to 11 months in advance. Camping cottages and deluxe cottages also book up to 11 months ahead, but reservations must be made at least 3 days before arrival.
What to expect
Sites near I-79 and I-70 are easy to reach in any rig and suit overnight stays, weekend trips, and longer pull-through stops at the KOA Journey. Expect typical commercial-park density and some highway noise close to the interstates.
Ryerson Station is a different experience. The 1,164-acre park features a swimming pool, campground, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and winter activities. Many sites have electric with a select few offering full-hookup service, electric-only sites come with 50-amp hookups, and all campsites feature a fire ring and a picnic table. Access requires several miles of winding two-lane roads that can challenge larger RVs, and GPS reliability is limited in this remote location. Cell service is spotty, with Verizon showing no coverage and AT&T providing weak signals, so download maps before arrival.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Washington%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Washington, PA?
Great news for first time renters: a regular Pennsylvania Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Washington, PA for the vast majority of motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a Non Commercial Class B license if a single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds GVWR, and nearly every rental on the platform comes in well under that. You will need to be 25 or older, hold a valid driver's license, and complete RVezy's quick ID verification during checkout. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you road ready for your Washington County adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Washington, PA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Interstate 70 or need a tow near the Pennsylvania Turnpike, help is one phone call away. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV and gives you real financial peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the package that matches your comfort level. Many first time renters choose a higher tier for an extra layer of confidence on their first Washington PA RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Washington, PA RV rental?
Booking is genuinely low risk. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. If life happens, a family emergency, a sudden work trip, or severe weather rolling through Washington County, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. The full policy details live on the RVezy Help Center so you can review them anytime. Book early to secure summer weekends near Raccoon Creek State Park, and reach out to RVezy support if anything changes, they handle cancellations directly so you are never negotiating with a host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Washington, PA?
Absolutely, and many RVezy hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching for a pet-friendly RV rental in Washington, PA to see listings that accept dogs (some hosts charge a small pet fee, which is shown upfront). Pennsylvania state parks make traveling with pets easy too: pet-friendly designated campsites are available at Raccoon Creek State Park and Ryerson Station State Park, both within an hour's drive. For daytime adventures, the 5,103-acre Raccoon Creek State Park has miles of leashed dog-friendly trails and a swimming beach with a separate dog-walking area. Bring proof of rabies vaccination, a tie-out, and your pup's favorite blanket.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Washington, PA is one of the most popular booking options, especially for first timers who would rather not drive a motorhome on day one. Many RVezy hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your destination, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Common drop spots include Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey off Interstate 79, Mountain Pines Campground in Champion, and private addresses across Washington County. Just filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your destination, and they will quote the delivery fee, usually based on round trip mileage. It is the easiest way to start a stress free Washington PA RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-RV-deliveryHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically travel?
You've got plenty of range. Most hosts in Washington, PA include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles available at a per-mile rate (typically $0.30 to $0.50), and some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer loops. From Washington, you can comfortably reach Pittsburgh in about 35 minutes (30 miles), Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater in roughly 90 minutes (75 miles), Cleveland in about 2 hours (135 miles), Seneca Rocks, West Virginia in around 3.5 hours (190 miles), and Niagara Falls in about 4 hours (225 miles). Pro tip: check the mileage allowance on each listing before booking, and message hosts directly if your route needs more cushion.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Washington, PA?
You're surrounded by excellent options for RV camping in Washington, PA. Top picks include Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey just off Interstate 79 Exit 33 (full hookups, 50-amp pull-throughs, and big-rig friendly); Raccoon Creek State Park about 25 miles north with five wooded loops, a swimming beach, and modern restrooms; Ryerson Station State Park 35 miles south for a quieter southwestern PA experience; Mountain Pines Campground near Champion in the Laurel Highlands with the largest pool in Pennsylvania; and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey if you're heading east. State park sites cost less than private parks and book through ReserveAmerica up to 11 months out. Lock in summer weekends early, they go fast.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Washington, PA?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Washington PA RV trip. July is the warmest month with average highs around 82 to 83°F and the most sunshine, while June, August, and September bring comfortable days in the 70s to low 80s with cool nights ideal for campfires. Early October is a local favorite: the Laurel Highlands and Allegheny foothills explode with red-and-gold foliage and crowds thin out. Winter is genuinely cold (January highs around 34°F with about 30 inches of snowfall annually), so most private campgrounds close from late October to April. If you love quiet shoulder-season travel, mid-September is the local insider's pick: warm days, cold beverages, and wide-open campsites.
weather.gov/pbz/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host in Washington, PA provides an in-person orientation at pickup that covers driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, the generator, and dumping tanks. Western PA has gently rolling terrain rather than steep mountain passes, so first time renting an RV here feels much more forgiving than driving in, say, Colorado. Stick to Interstates 70 and 79 for your first few miles, avoid downtown Pittsburgh's narrow streets and low bridges (especially the Liberty Tunnel at 11'7"), and don't be shy about messaging your host mid-trip. Pro tip: book a delivered travel trailer for your very first rental and let the host do all the driving.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is built into every booking. RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat, a dead battery, or a mechanical issue anywhere from Washington, PA to the Outer Banks, you can call one number any time of day or night. For mechanical issues, your host is also just a message away and often knows exactly which local shop to recommend along Route 19 in nearby Canonsburg. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave, snap photos of any damage as it happens, and you will be back rolling toward Ohiopyle in no time.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008874-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, Washington, PA sits at the crossroads of Interstates 70 and 79, which makes it a great launch pad for multi state road trips. You can freely take your RV across state lines into West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, and beyond. Popular RV road trip routes from Washington, PA include the 75 mile run to Ohiopyle and Fallingwater, the 90 mile drive to Coopers Rock State Forest in WV, and the roughly 220 mile haul to Shenandoah National Park. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts with valid insurance coverage, so confirm with the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's predictable once you plan for it. In Pennsylvania, expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers 10 to 14 MPG. Gas stations along Interstate 70 and Interstate 79 around Washington tend to be slightly cheaper than Pittsburgh metro prices, with Sheetz and GetGo stations offering competitive rates and plenty of room for big rigs. A 300-mile weekend in a Class C will typically run $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Washington County before heading into West Virginia, where diesel can swing higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Washington, PA?
Book your RV first, then your campsite, and the earlier the better. Pennsylvania state parks (Raccoon Creek, Ryerson Station, Ohiopyle) open reservations 11 months in advance at noon Eastern Time through the ReserveAmerica system, one of the longest booking windows in the country. Summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) and October foliage weekends at Ohiopyle book out within hours of release. Private parks like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey and Mountain Pines fill up 2 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, set a free cancellation alert through Campnab, openings pop up almost daily.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat are the driving conditions like around Washington, PA?
Driving an RV in and around Washington, PA is approachable for most renters. The area sits on rolling Allegheny Plateau terrain (elevation around 1,100 feet), with Interstates 70 and 79 providing wide, easy interstate driving in every direction. Watch for a few local quirks: the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) has narrow shoulders and tunnels with height limits around 14'3", downtown Pittsburgh has steep grades on Mount Washington you'll want to skip, and winter brings snow and ice from December through March (think twice about cold-season trips unless you're experienced). Summer thunderstorms can be intense in July and August. Stick to interstates, avoid downtown Pittsburgh, and you'll have a smooth ride.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/WinterDriving.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Washington, PA?
Most campgrounds near Washington, PA offer everything you need for a comfortable stay. Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey has full hookups (50-amp and 30-amp), pull-through sites, hot showers, laundry, and a dump station. Pennsylvania state parks like Raccoon Creek offer modern bathhouses with flush toilets and warm showers, plus a growing number of full-hookup sites with sewer, water, and electric, and free dump stations for registered campers. For potable water fill-ups between trips, the Washington KOA and Mountain Pines both welcome paid users. Pro tip: call ahead to confirm dump-station access if you're not staying overnight, some private parks charge a small fee ($10 to $20) for non-guests.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat's actually inside an RV rental near Washington, PA?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rentals are. Most motorhome and campervan rentals in Washington, PA come with a real queen or king bed, a kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating with seatbelts, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and a freshwater tank. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and onboard generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss depending on cell signal (T-Mobile and Verizon both work well in Washington County), so plan for spotty connection at Ryerson Station. Each listing on RVezy shows photos and a full amenities list, and you can message the host to confirm specifics like bed sizes or generator capacity.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat add ons can I get with my Washington, PA RV rental?
Hosts in Washington, PA offer a wide range of add ons to make your trip easier. Popular extras include linen and kitchen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30), portable Wi-Fi hotspots ($10 to $20 per day), bike racks, kayaks or stand up paddleboards, generators with extra fuel, and propane fire pits. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Washington County or nearby towns like Canonsburg, Houston, or McMurray, with drop off at the same location. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles around $0.35 each. Use the Instant Book filter on RVezy to find listings you can confirm without waiting for a host reply.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Washington%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure on RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and your trip total, including the rental, protection plan, RVezy service fee, taxes, and any add ons, is shown clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card a few days before pickup; the exact amount is set per listing and is released after drop off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid issues, document the RV condition with photos at pickup and drop off, return it on time, follow the mileage and pet rules in your booking, and refill the tanks as agreed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping near Washington, PA actually possible?
Yes, and it can be a magical Washington PA RV trip if you plan smart. Winters here are cold (January highs around 34°F, lows in the 20s, and about 30 inches of annual snowfall), but several private campgrounds like Washington/Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey stay open year-round with electric hookups for shore power. Look for RV listings on RVezy with four-season insulation, heated holding tanks, and a propane furnace, and message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness. Pack tank heaters or RV antifreeze, a heated water hose, and chains for steep driveways. Pro tip: pair a winter rental with a snow-tubing weekend at Seven Springs or Hidden Valley in the Laurel Highlands, both under 90 minutes east of Washington.
