Campgrounds and RV parks near Arkwright, SC

Most outdoor activity centers on Croft State Park, which covers more than 7,000 acres of rolling, wooded terrain a few miles from downtown Spartanburg. The park offers more than 20 miles of biking and hiking trails, a playground, picnicking, and fishing and boating on 165-acre Lake Craig, with electric motors only. Non-motorized fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent, and the park is well known regionally for its equestrian arena, more than 20 miles of horse trails, and over 50 stalls. Back at the private parks, families gravitate to on-site amenities such as pools, ponds, game rooms, and playgrounds where offered. Downtown Spartanburg, about ten minutes from the Roebuck area, adds restaurants, museums, and Hub City sights, including the Chapman Cultural Center and the Spartanburg Art Museum.

Spartanburg County has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and cool, wet winters. Croft State Park and the closest private RV parks operate year-round, so RV travelers can plan trips in any season, though comfort and demand shift noticeably through the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for outdoor activity, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Summers bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and peak booking demand around holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year, with warm-season totals boosted by thunderstorms. Winters are cool rather than harsh, with only about one to five inches of snow in a typical year across the Upstate. During the winter season, select camping and equestrian sites at Croft State Park are temporarily closed on a rotating basis for remediation work, with closures occurring in phases rather than all at once, so campers should review the park's schedule when planning off-season stays.

At Croft State Park, campsites are packed gravel with water and electrical hookups, and some sites can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Twenty-five sites offer 50-amp service, and both campground areas have modern restrooms with hot showers nearby. The Lakeside area provides 20, 30, and 50-amp service, while the Inland area is 30-amp, and a primitive group camping area is available for organized groups. Private parks in the area, including Pine Ridge Campground, typically offer pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, laundry, hot showers, and a dump station. Pets are allowed at both public and private parks with leash rules, and firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be sourced within the state and from less than 50 miles away to help prevent the spread of invasive forest pests.
