Camping near Ben Avon, South Carolina
Ben Avon is an unincorporated community in eastern Spartanburg County, bordered to the northwest by the city of Spartanburg and to the south by the former Camp Croft military reservation. U.S. Route 176 (South Pine Street) runs through the community, connecting it to downtown Spartanburg about three miles northwest and to Union roughly 22 miles to the southeast. That placement gives RV travelers quick access to Interstates 26 and 85, and to the wooded Piedmont terrain south of the city.
The closest developed campground is Croft State Park, a state park in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, located on land used during World War II as Camp Croft, a US Army basic training center, directly south of Ben Avon. Private options within a short drive include Pine Ridge Campground in Roebuck, Cunningham RV Park, Spacious Skies Peach Haven near Gaffney, and Turtle Creek Campground.
The area suits families and touring RVers looking for a Piedmont base with full-hookup private parks nearby and a large state park for hiking, biking, paddling, and equestrian use.
Things to do near Ben Avon
Croft State Park anchors outdoor recreation in the area. The park offers more than 12 miles of biking and hiking trails, a playground, picnicking and camping, as well as fishing and boating in two lakes, including 150-acre Lake Craig. Croft is also known around the region for its equestrian facilities, with more than 20 miles of equestrian trails and 55 stalls.
Downtown Spartanburg sits roughly five miles from Ben Avon and provides restaurants, breweries, and the Hub City Railroad Museum. Farther afield, Cowpens National Battlefield, the Gaffney Peachoid, Walnut Grove Plantation, and outlet shopping in Gaffney are all reachable as day trips.
Many private campgrounds in the area, including Pine Ridge Campground and Spacious Skies Peach Haven, add on-site amenities such as pools, playgrounds, fishing ponds, and dog parks for kids and pets between excursions.

The Upstate has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and cool, damp winters. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can occur during the warmer months. Summer highs commonly reach near 90°F, so shaded sites and full hookups with reliable air conditioning matter. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity.
Croft State Park is open year-round, though during the winter 2026 to 2027 season, select camping and equestrian sites at Croft State Park will be temporarily closed on a rotating basis for remediation work. Closures will occur in phases, and not all sites will be closed at the same time. Guests are encouraged to review the schedule when planning their stay.
Most private campgrounds in the area, including Pine Ridge Campground, operate year-round as well, with peak family visitation from Memorial Day through Labor Day and a second bump around fall foliage in late October and early November.

Everything was Awesome, enjoyed working with The love birds. I would recommend anyone to use them. This was my first rv rental. Everything was explained to me how to work it. If I had any questions they were there to walk me through it.
Sharyl E. - Aug 2024
Only problem we had was some little black ants - but I think that was as much to do with the rain as anything. Great communication and responsiveness. Would rent from them again if back in the area.

How to book near Ben Avon
Croft State Park uses the South Carolina State Parks reservation system. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance. Reservations requested less than one day in advance of check-in must be made directly through the park. Bookings can be made online or by phone at 1-866-345-PARK. Minimum length of stay is 2 nights for advance reservations, longer stays may be required during peak season and holidays, and maximum length of stay is 14 nights, after which campers must vacate the park for 7 days.
Cancellations made 15 or more days from the reservation date incur no charges, cancellations made 4 to 14 days out forfeit a per-unit fee, and cancellations made 3 days or less forfeit all funds. No-show reservations also forfeit all funds.
Private parks such as Pine Ridge Campground, Cunningham RV Park, Spacious Skies Peach Haven, and Turtle Creek Campground book directly through each property, with their own deposit and cancellation policies.
What to expect on-site
At Croft State Park, each site is packed gravel with water and electrical hookups. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and twenty-five of the campsites offer 50-amp service. The campgrounds are convenient to restrooms with hot showers. The campground is divided into the Inland Campground with 30-amp service and the Lakeside Campground with 20/30/50-amp service, plus a primitive group camping area.
Private parks in the area tend to be more amenity-heavy, with paved pull-throughs, 20/30/50-amp full hookups, pools, playgrounds, and game rooms common at properties such as Pine Ridge Campground and Spacious Skies Peach Haven.
All firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away to limit invasive pests. Pets are allowed in camping areas and must be on a leash no greater than 6 feet or crated at all times.

Good news: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ben Avon for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ben Avon?
Absolutely, and you've got great options. Many RVezy hosts in the Spartanburg area welcome pets, just use the Pet-Friendly filter to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Ben Avon in seconds. Croft State Park, just five miles down the road, allows leashed dogs throughout campgrounds and on its miles of trails, including the Fairforest Creek Loop. Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve in nearby Spartanburg is another leash-friendly green space your pup will love. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and bring a portable water bowl, summer humidity here is no joke for furry travelers.
southcarolinaparks.com/croft/introductionCan the RV be delivered to me in Ben Avon?
Yes, RV delivery in Ben Avon is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your driveway, a local campground like Croft State Park, or a private property, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the propane on your own. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery, then message your top picks to confirm they'll deliver to your exact campground in Spartanburg County.

Many hosts offer generous mileage packages, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're chasing waterfalls in the Upstate or peaches along the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway. Pro tip: check the host's mileage allowance before booking and ask about unlimited add-ons for longer loops.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Ben Avon, SC?
You're spoiled for choice with campgrounds within 30 minutes of Ben Avon. Croft State Park (450 Croft State Park Rd, Spartanburg) sits just five miles away with paved RV sites, water and electric hookups, and access to Lake Craig and miles of multi-use trails. Spacious Skies Peach Haven in Gaffney offers full hookups and is big-rig friendly, while Cunningham RV Park provides a quiet alternative with full-service sites. Pro tip: Croft accepts reservations well in advance through the official South Carolina State Parks system, and weekends sell out fast in spring.
southcarolinaparks.com/croft/campingWhen is the best time for RV camping in Ben Avon?
Ben Avon's Piedmont climate makes RV camping in Ben Avon a nearly year-round activity, which is one of the best-kept secrets of South Carolina. Spring (March to May) brings 65 to 80 F days and blooming dogwoods. Fall (September to early November) is arguably the sweet spot: 60 to 75 F, lower humidity, and Blue Ridge foliage just an hour north. Summer hits the upper 80s to low 90s with humidity, so book a rig with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild, often 45 to 55 F in the day, making this a snowbird-friendly stop. Pro tip: October weekends at Croft State Park book out months ahead, so plan early.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what I'm doing?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, dump procedures, and quirks of that specific rig. You can also message the host before booking with any question, no matter how small. Spartanburg's surrounding roads, especially heading to Croft State Park or out toward Greer, are wide and beginner-friendly, with far less stress than big-city driving. And 24/7 roadside assistance is included on every booking, so help is one tap away if anything goes sideways. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much like a large van or pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if something breaks down during my Ben Avon RV trip?
Don't worry, you're never alone out there. Every RV rental in South Carolina booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Whether you're parked at Croft State Park, climbing toward Caesars Head, or pulled over on I-85, one call connects you with help dispatched to your location. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for anything rig-specific, like resetting the inverter or troubleshooting the awning. Pro tip: snap a photo of the VIN and your campsite location when you arrive, it speeds up any service call dramatically.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ben Avon RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on most listings, and a motorhome rental in Ben Avon is perfect for crossing into North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, or beyond. Popular cross-state runs include the Blue Ridge Parkway (NC), the Great Smoky Mountains, and Savannah, GA. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the specific protection package, just message the listing before booking to confirm and update your trip details. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy booking because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: tell your host your full route up front so they can flag any mileage upgrades worth adding for the best value.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic expectations make for happy trips. A Class B campervan typically gets 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), a Class C motorhome lands around 10 to 14 mpg, and a Class A coach runs 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent drop from its usual mpg. South Carolina gas prices tend to run among the lowest in the country, often 20 to 40 cents below the national average, with stations along I-85 in Spartanburg consistently competitive. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in SC before crossing into NC, where prices typically jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ben Avon?
Earlier is better, especially for the gems. Croft State Park accepts reservations well in advance through the official South Carolina State Parks reservation system, and weekend RV sites from April through October regularly book out 3 to 6 months ahead. For private parks like Spacious Skies Peach Haven, 4 to 8 weeks is usually plenty outside peak holidays. If you're targeting a holiday weekend (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day), aim for 6 months out. Pro tip: Croft has minimum and maximum stay rules for advance reservations, so check the official reservation system when you build your South Carolina RV trip itinerary.
southcarolinaparks.com/croft/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Ben Avon and Spartanburg?
Driving here is genuinely easygoing compared to most metro areas. Ben Avon sits along US 176 (South Pine Street), a wide, well-maintained corridor that runs three miles into downtown Spartanburg. I-85 and I-26 give you quick access in every direction with generous shoulders and standard 13'6" bridge clearances. The main thing to watch: summer afternoon thunderstorms can dump heavy rain quickly between June and August, and Upstate hills mean a few sustained grades when heading toward the Blue Ridge. Snow is rare but possible in January or February. Pro tip: avoid I-85 northbound through Spartanburg on weekday afternoons (4 to 6 p.m.) when BMW shift traffic creates the only real congestion you'll see.
scdot.org/travel/travel-driving.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Ben Avon offer?
You'll find a great mix. Croft State Park offers 50 paved sites with water and 20/30/50-amp electric, a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets, plus pet-friendly trails. Private parks like Spacious Skies Peach Haven and Beckon Ridge RV Park provide full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and often a pool or dog park. Most parks in Spartanburg County have on-site dump stations and potable water fills, so you can refill before heading north into the mountains where services thin out. Pro tip: if you're staying at Croft and need full sewer hookups, plan a quick dump-and-fill stop at one of the nearby private parks on your way home.
southcarolinaparks.com/croft/campingWhat features come standard in a Ben Avon RV rental?
Even an entry-level campervan rental in Ben Avon comes loaded for comfort. Expect a real bed (queen in most Class B and C rigs, sometimes a king in Class A), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted passenger seats. Many listings include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, generator or solar, outdoor awning, and camp chairs. Larger family RVs sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds and convertible dinettes, ideal for a family RV trip in Ben Avon. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host about specific must-haves like a Blackstone griddle, kayak rack, or pack-n-play.
southcarolinaparks.com/croftWhat add-ons can I get and how does mileage work?
Hosts make it easy to customize your rent-an-RV-in-Ben-Avon experience. Popular add-ons include linen and kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, portable grills, generator hours, extra camp chairs, and pet packages, with fees set per item by each host. Mileage policies vary too: many hosts include 100 to 150 miles per night free, with additional miles priced at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage for a flat upgrade. Pickup is usually at the host's home or your delivery address, and dropoff mirrors that. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a stocked kitchen kit, you'll save hours of prep and start your South Carolina road trip relaxed.
southcarolinaparks.com/croftHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking your RV rental in South Carolina is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is collected separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), held during your rental, and released back to your card after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Avoid issues by completing the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, photographing the interior and exterior at pickup, and refueling and dumping tanks before return as agreed. Pro tip: read the listing's mileage and generator policy carefully so there are no surprises at checkout.
