Clifton is a small community in Spartanburg County along the Pacolet River, positioned between Spartanburg and Cowpens in the state's Upcountry. The area sits just a short drive from I-85 and downtown Spartanburg, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the northwestern corner of South Carolina. Local terrain is rolling and wooded, with the river corridor and former mill village giving the town its character.
RV options within reach range from private parks to a large state park campground. Croft State Park, in Spartanburg County, sits on land used during World War II as Camp Croft, just south of Spartanburg, and covers more than 7,000 acres of rolling, wooded terrain just a few miles from downtown Spartanburg. Spacious Skies Peach Haven lies north of Clifton near Gaffney, while Turtle Creek Campground, Pine Ridge Campground, and Cunningham RV Park round out the nearby options for hookups and shorter stays.
Together these campgrounds cover a range of trip styles, from full-service family stays with pools and mini-golf to quieter, wooded state park sites suited to hikers, cyclists, and anglers.
Things to do near Clifton
Croft State Park is the anchor for outdoor recreation in the area. The park offers over 20 miles of biking and hiking trails, a playground, picnicking and camping, as well as fishing and boating in one of two lakes, and is known around the region for its equestrian facilities, regularly hosting shows in its arena with more than 20 miles of equestrian trails. Lake Craig covers 165 acres and is limited to electric motors, and boat rentals include non-motorized fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks.
In Clifton itself, Clifton Park and Beach sits on a former textile mill site along the Pacolet River, with picnic areas, a playground, and a picnic shelter managed by Spartanburg County.
Families staying at Spacious Skies Peach Haven can pair their stay with short drives to the Gaffney Peachoid, Cowpens National Battlefield, and the Gaffney Outlet Marketplace.

The Upcountry has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and cool, wet winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity than the summer peak. Wildflowers and dogwoods appear through spring, and hardwood color usually peaks along the Pacolet and in Croft State Park from mid-October into early November.
Summer brings the busiest camping weeks, along with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heat that regularly pushes into the upper 80s. Pool access and shaded, piney sites at private parks like Spacious Skies Peach Haven help on the hottest days. Long weekends and school holidays fill first, so book well ahead.
Winters are cool rather than harsh, with occasional freezes and, in the Upstate, a few small snow events. During the winter 2026 to 2027 season, select camping and equestrian sites at Croft State Park will be temporarily closed on a rotating basis for remediation work, with closures phased so not all sites will be closed at the same time.

Everything was Awesome, enjoyed working with The love birds. I would recommend anyone to use them. This was my first rv rental. Everything was explained to me how to work it. If I had any questions they were there to walk me through it.
Sharyl E. - Aug 2024
Only problem we had was some little black ants - but I think that was as much to do with the rain as anything. Great communication and responsiveness. Would rent from them again if back in the area.

How to book a site near Clifton
Croft State Park uses the South Carolina State Parks reservation system. Croft is one of South Carolina's most popular parks, and its reservation system allows spots to be reserved up to 13 months in advance. Reservations can be made toll-free at 1-866-345-PARK or through the state parks reservations page. The minimum length of stay is 2 nights for advance reservations, longer stays may be required during peak season and holidays, the maximum length of stay is 14 nights, and campers must vacate the park for 7 days after reaching that maximum.
Cancellations 15 or more days from the reservation date incur no charges, cancellations 4 to 14 days out forfeit ten dollars per unit, and cancellations 3 days or less from the reservation forfeit all funds. Private parks such as Spacious Skies Peach Haven, Turtle Creek Campground, Pine Ridge Campground, and Cunningham RV Park each set their own booking, deposit, and cancellation terms, so confirm policies directly at the time of reservation.
What to expect on arrival
At Croft State Park, each site is packed gravel and has water and electrical hookups. The park has two campgrounds with 25 sites each: the office campground has 20/30 amp service, the lake campground has 20/30/50 amp service, and while there are no sewer hookups, a centrally located dump station serves both loops. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Pets are allowed in camping areas and must be on a leash no greater than 6 feet or crated at all times.
Spacious Skies Peach Haven, near Gaffney, offers full hook-up RV sites as well as water and electric only sites, is big rig friendly with paved sites that include a fire ring, grill, and dining table, plus shaded sites tucked into a piney grove. The resort adds a pool, mini-golf, jumping pillow, ponds, and rec hall for families. Wifi is available for visitors to use outside of the park office at Croft, and cell coverage is generally reliable across the wider area.

To find these options, simply toggle the Delivery filter on the search page and enter your destination. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for nervous first-timers or anyone who doesn't want to tow, it's worth every penny. You arrive, the RV is ready, and your South Carolina vacation starts the moment you open the door.

From Clifton, you're about 35 miles to Greenville, 75 miles to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, 80 miles to Charlotte, 200 miles to Charleston's coast, and roughly 240 miles to the Great Smoky Mountains. Pro tip: map your route first, then filter for hosts whose mileage policies match your plans, so there are no surprises on fill-up day.

southcarolinaparks.com/croft/campingWhen is the best time to visit Clifton, SC in an RV?
Clifton, SC is a year-round RV destination, but spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the sweet spots. Spring brings dogwood blooms and highs in the 65 to 78 F range, while fall delivers crisp 55 to 75 F days and great foliage in the nearby Blue Ridge foothills. Summer is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, so book RVs with strong air conditioning and consider campgrounds with shade or lake access like Croft State Park. Winters are mild with highs often in the 50s, making December through February appealing for snowbirds. Insider tip: time your Clifton RV trip for Spartanburg's Spring Fling in early May.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Clifton, SC really doable?
Yes, and first time renting an RV in Clifton is easier than you'd think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slides, water system, propane, and driving quirks of that specific rig. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, filter for Delivery and a host will set up the RV at your campsite. For your first trip, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet, both of which handle Clifton's gentle terrain and Spartanburg's two-lane roads comfortably. You can message hosts with any question before booking, and RVezy's 24/7 support team is just a call away once you're on the road.
scdmvonline.com/Driver-Services/Drivers-LicenseWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Clifton, SC trip?
Breathe easy: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away whether you are parked at Croft State Park or rolling down I-85. Roadside assistance covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Clifton sits in a well-served area with major dealerships and repair shops in nearby Spartanburg and Greenville, so wait times tend to be reasonable. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup, save your host's phone number, and keep the RVezy support line handy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clifton RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes, in most cases. Cross-state travel from Clifton, SC is easy and common, with popular trips heading to North Carolina's Smoky Mountains, Georgia's coast, Tennessee, or Virginia, all covered by the standard RVezy protection. Trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection terms, so just message the host before booking to confirm. The one hard rule: travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. For a classic RV road trip from Clifton, head 75 miles up to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway, then loop through the Smokies. Just confirm border plans with your host first.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for in Clifton, SC?
Plan smart and your Clifton RV trip stays affordable. Class C motorhomes typically get 8-12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches around 6-10 MPG, campervans 14-20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on the tow vehicle (often 10-15 MPG combined). South Carolina has some of the lowest gas prices in the Southeast, frequently 20-40 cents under the national average, and diesel is widely available along I-85 and Highway 29. For a 3-day local loop staying near Spartanburg, budget around $80-$150 in fuel; a longer Asheville or Charleston run might run $200-$350. Pro tip: fill up in SC before crossing into NC, where prices typically jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clifton, SC?
For peace of mind, book campgrounds 3-6 months ahead, especially for popular spots like Croft State Park, which fills up fast on weekends from April through October and during BMW Performance Driving School events in Spartanburg. Private RV parks in the area like Cunningham RV Park or Pine Ridge Campground typically open reservations 6-12 months ahead. Pro tip: weekday arrivals are far easier to score, and shoulder seasons (March or November) often have same-week availability with the same beautiful weather minus the crowds.

The town sits on quiet two-lane roads along the Pacolet River, with easy access to I-85 (the main artery) and I-26 about 15 minutes away. Watch for low-clearance railroad bridges in old mill towns like Clifton and Pacolet (most cleared around 11-12 feet, so check your RV height), and avoid downtown Spartanburg's narrow side streets in a Class A. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, so plan longer drives for mornings. Otherwise, smooth sailing on your South Carolina motorhome rental adventure.

Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages ($30-$75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25-$50), camp chairs and outdoor mats ($15-$30), generators or extra propane, bike racks, and even pre-stocked groceries from some hosts. Delivery and setup is the most popular option, with fees typically based on distance from the host's location. Mileage policies vary, with most hosts offering 100-150 free miles per day. Pickup and drop-off windows are flexible: just coordinate directly through the RVezy messaging system. Pro tip: bundling linens and a kitchen kit is the easiest way to fly in, land at Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP), and hit the road same-day.
gspairport.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for RVezy rentals in Clifton, SC?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. Your trip total is charged according to RVezy's standard payment schedule. A separate refundable security deposit is held before pickup to cover potential damages beyond what the renter protection plan covers, and the amount is set within RVezy's framework based on the RV. Assuming the rig comes back as it left, your deposit is released after the trip. To avoid hiccups, do a careful walk-through with your host at pickup and drop-off, take date-stamped photos, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Clifton, SC?
