Campgrounds and RV parks near Edgefield, SC

Lake Thurmond dominates the local recreation map. Anglers target largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, and striped bass, and the lake supports boating, water skiing, swimming, and paddling along an extensive shoreline. Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area has two boat ramps and a self-serve kayak rental kiosk at the water's edge. A short on-park bike path connects to the 12-mile Stevens Creek Bike Trail. In the Long Cane Ranger District of Sumter National Forest, visitors find hiking, mountain biking on the Forks Area Trail System, hunting, target shooting, and equestrian use on the Long Cane Horse Trail. In town, the National Wild Turkey Federation's Winchester Museum offers exhibits on wildlife conservation and turkey hunting heritage, a useful rainy-day stop for families. Downtown Edgefield also features pottery studios, historic sites, and the town-square Strom Thurmond statue.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of South Carolina. Daytime highs sit in the seventies, humidity is lower than in summer, and bug pressure is manageable. Spring brings strong visitation to Lake Thurmond as fishing picks up and weekend reservations at Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area fill quickly; booking well ahead is recommended for Friday and Saturday nights from March through May. Summers are hot and muggy, with afternoon highs commonly in the upper eighties to lower nineties and frequent thunderstorms. Lake-based parks remain busy through Independence Day and into August, but inland forest sites can feel oppressive at midday. Ticks and mosquitoes are common, and insect repellent is advised. Fall offers cooler nights, lower crowds, and good fishing on Lake Thurmond, with foliage in the surrounding piedmont typically peaking in late October and early November. Winters are cool and wet rather than snowy, and most regional campgrounds stay open year-round, though weekday occupancy drops sharply from December through February.

Hamilton Branch State Recreation Area offers lakefront sites with water and electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, comfort stations with hot showers, and dump station access. Most campsite parking spurs fall in the 30 to 35 foot range, with only a few spurs at 40 feet, so larger rigs should review site details before booking. Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas on a leash no longer than six feet. Private parks vary in feel. Aiken RV Park sits a short drive off Interstate 20 with full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, and pull-through sites geared to overnight travelers. Lake Thurmond RV Park is a quieter wooded property with 30- and 50-amp service and water and sewer hookups, oriented toward longer stays. Cellular coverage is generally reliable near town and on major lake access roads, but can be spotty deeper inside Sumter National Forest.
