Campgrounds and RV parks near Mayo, SC

The surrounding Upcountry mixes Revolutionary War history, foothills hiking, and small-town day trips. Cowpens National Battlefield and Kings Mountain National Military Park are both within roughly a half-hour drive and offer self-guided auto tours, walking paths, and visitor centers. The Gaffney Peachoid and Gaffney Outlet Marketplace are common stops for families staying in the area. Outdoor recreation centers on Kings Mountain State Park. The 1.8-mile Ridgeline Trail straddles the South Carolina and North Carolina border and connects this park to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Crowders Mountain State Park. Horses are welcome on the primarily flat 20-mile equestrian trail, which offers views of rolling hills and granite outcroppings, and fishing fans can cast from the bank or launch a non-motorized boat. On-site amenities at private parks add rainy-day backup, from pools and mini-golf to jumping pillows, gem mining, and arcades.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel in the Upcountry. Days run warm without the humidity peaks of midsummer, and both shoulder seasons draw steady weekend traffic to state parks and private campgrounds. Kings Mountain State Park is an excellent place to see the leaf changes in the fall, and October weekends typically book out well in advance. Summer is peak family season. Expect hot, humid afternoons with pop-up thunderstorms, and size hookups accordingly if running air conditioning through the day. Private parks with pools, jumping pillows, and mini-golf fill quickly around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Reserve holiday weekends several weeks out, and longer where minimum-stay rules apply. Winter camping is quieter but viable. The Piedmont sees occasional freezes and rare snow or ice events, so RVers should watch forecasts, heat-tape water lines, and confirm whether water spigots at state-park sites are winterized. Many private parks in the area stay open year-round and cater to long-term guests, while state-park campgrounds continue to accept reservations through the cooler months.

Terrain around Mayo is rolling Piedmont, so expect gentle grades on approach roads and some site-leveling work. At Kings Mountain State Park in particular, the narrow, winding access road requires careful navigation for larger rigs, sites pack closely together with minimal privacy screening, most feature gravel pads of varying levelness with electric and water hookups positioned differently across sites, and several reviewers mention the need for extra leveling blocks, particularly for longer RVs. Hookup availability varies. Each site is packed gravel and includes individual water and electrical hookups, several sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and the campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers. Private parks in the corridor tend to offer full hookups, laundry, WiFi, and camp stores, along with family amenities. Cell coverage is generally solid along I-85 and thinner in wooded state-park sections. Plan grocery and fuel stops in Gaffney or Spartanburg before pulling into more remote sites.
