Campgrounds and RV parks near Murphys Estates, SC

Aiken itself is the anchor for day trips. The city is known for equestrian sports, with venues clustered around Hitchcock Woods and events including the Aiken Steeplechase. Downtown Aiken has walkable shops, restaurants, and public gardens that work well for a rest day off the road. Outdoor activity centers on water and woods. Aiken State Park has a canoe and kayak trail on the South Fork of the Edisto River, four fishing ponds fed by artesian springs, hiking on the Jungle Nature Trail, and a seasonal swimming area. J. Strom Thurmond Lake offers boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bream, and catfish, with roughly 1,200 miles of shoreline to explore.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of South Carolina. Days are warm without being oppressive, humidity is manageable, and the equestrian calendar in Aiken pulls in visitors from March through May and again in the fall, so weekend sites at private RV parks can tighten up. Summer is hot and humid. Highs at Aiken frequently sit around 90 Fahrenheit in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Sites with shade and reliable 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. August tends to be the wettest month locally, and rainfall stays elevated from June through August. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with peak activity in late summer and early fall. Hurricane Helene, which struck in September 2024, closed multiple Corps of Engineers campgrounds at J. Strom Thurmond Lake for extended repairs, and reopenings have been staged over more than a year. Confirm campground status before booking fall trips. Winters are short and cool rather than cold, and most private RV parks stay open year-round.

Expect a mix of pine and hardwood forest, sandy soils, and gently rolling terrain. Private RV parks in the Aiken and North Augusta area tend to be smaller and quieter than destination resorts, with full hookups and pull-through options common but limited on-site amenities like pools or activity programs. At Aiken State Park, sites are packed sand with individual water and 30 and 50 amp electric, six full-hookup sites (numbers 20 to 25), and a comfort station with hot showers. Some sites accommodate RVs up to about 35 feet, and the access road is narrow and winding, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. At Corps campgrounds on Thurmond Lake, expect water and electric sites, bathhouses with flush toilets and showers, and nearby boat ramps. Pets are allowed on a six-foot leash. Cell coverage can be spotty near the water.
