Campgrounds near North Augusta
North Augusta sits on the South Carolina bank of the Savannah River, directly across from Augusta, Georgia. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Central Savannah River region, with easy interstate access via I-20 and a mix of private RV parks, Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds, and South Carolina state parks within a short drive.
Close-in options include Carolina Hill Mobile Home and RV Park and Heritage RV Park, both of which cater to longer stays and full-hookup travelers. Plantation Oaks RV Park and Campertown RV Park sit within the greater Aiken corridor and suit RVers who want a quieter, wooded setting, while Aiken RV Park works well for visitors targeting the equestrian and downtown Aiken scene.
For lake-focused trips, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages multiple campgrounds around J. Strom Thurmond Lake (also called Clarks Hill Lake), the 70,000-acre reservoir that straddles the Georgia and South Carolina border just north of Augusta. Hurricane Helene damage from 2024 has affected availability at several Corps sites, so confirming status before booking is essential.
Things to do in North Augusta
The North Augusta Greeneway is the region's signature outdoor asset: a paved multi-use trail running several miles along the Savannah River, through hardwood forest and past Riverview Park. It connects to Brick Pond Park, a restored wetland where visitors can spot turtles, waterfowl, and occasional alligators from easy walking paths.
SRP Park hosts the Augusta GreenJackets minor league baseball team on the North Augusta riverfront, and the Living History Park stages colonial-era reenactments throughout the year. Boat ramps on the Savannah River give paddlers and anglers direct water access.
For lake days, J. Strom Thurmond Lake offers boating, swimming beaches, and fishing within about a half-hour drive. The Masters Tournament at nearby Augusta National takes over the region in early April.

The Central Savannah River area has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, muggy summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with daytime highs typically in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Dogwoods and azaleas peak in late March and early April, which coincides with Masters week and a sharp spike in regional demand for lodging and campsites.
Summer runs hot and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and heat indices regularly climb into the upper 90s. Full-hookup sites with reliable power for air conditioning become important during this period.
Winter camping is genuinely feasible here. Nights are cool rather than harsh, snowfall is rare, and most private RV parks operate year-round. However, Army Corps campgrounds at Thurmond Lake typically run a seasonal schedule from late March through mid-September, and Atlantic hurricane season (June through November) can bring significant storm impacts to the region.
How to book a campsite near North Augusta
Private parks including Carolina Hill Mobile Home and RV Park, Heritage RV Park, Plantation Oaks RV Park, Campertown RV Park, and Aiken RV Park generally take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Many accommodate longer stays and monthly rentals, so weekly and monthly options are worth asking about.
Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around J. Strom Thurmond Lake are booked through Recreation.gov, with a booking window that opens up to 240 days ahead of arrival. South Carolina state park campsites are reservable through the state park system up to 13 months in advance, with a two-night minimum typical for most stays.
Masters week in early April, Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill fastest. Book several months out for those windows, and verify Corps campground status given ongoing hurricane recovery work.
What to expect
Most private RV parks in and around North Augusta lean toward level, gravel or paved pull-through and back-in sites with full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Shade varies: some parks sit under mature pines and hardwoods, while others are more open. Big rigs are generally accommodated at the larger commercial parks, but confirming site length and turning radius in advance is smart.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Thurmond Lake offer water and electric hookups, bathhouses, boat ramps, and lake access, but no sewer at individual sites; a dump station is provided. Sites tend to be wooded and well spaced.
Expect humidity, insects (bring repellent), and occasional afternoon storms in warmer months. Cell coverage is strong near town and patchier at lake campgrounds farther from the interstate.

For a shorter trip, head 90 minutes north to Lake Hartwell or 2 hours east to Congaree National Park. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A coaches sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 MPG combined. South Carolina has historically had some of the lowest gas prices in the country, often 20 to 40 cents below the national average, so filling up before crossing into Georgia or North Carolina can save real money. Pro tip: top off in Aiken or North Augusta before heading toward the lake, where stations are sparser and pricier.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For most weekends near North Augusta, two to three months out is plenty, but a few situations call for earlier planning. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Clarks Hill Lake (Petersburg, Modoc, Winfield, Mistletoe) open reservations exactly 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov, and waterfront sites disappear within minutes for summer weekends. South Carolina State Parks like Hamilton Branch use ReserveAmerica and book up 3 to 4 months in advance for holidays. Privately owned spots like Pine Acres Campground and Lake Thurmond RV Park usually have more last-minute flexibility. Insider tip: for early-April Masters week, lock in your site the previous summer, locals start booking the very day reservations open.
recreation.gov/What's driving an RV around North Augusta actually like?
Driving in and around North Augusta is one of the most relaxed RV experiences in the Southeast. Roads like I-20, I-520, and US-1 are wide, flat, and well-maintained, with no mountain passes or tight urban canyons to worry about. The biggest things to watch for are summer afternoon thunderstorms (they pop up fast between June and September), occasional fog along the Savannah River at dawn, and low-clearance bridges in older parts of downtown Augusta, GA, just across the river. Avoid the narrow streets of historic Aiken's horse district with anything over 25 feet. Pro tip: download the SCDOT 511 app for real-time alerts, and plan to be off the road before 4 p.m. thunderstorms during July and August.

Potable water fills are available at every developed campground. For dumping between stays, look at Heritage RV Park or Barnyard RV Park, both of which have public-access dump stations. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances of 100 to 150 miles standard and unlimited mileage available on some listings.
