Campgrounds and RV parks near Union, SC

Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site preserves the antebellum home of Governor William Henry Gist along the Tyger River, with a guided house tour, gardens, and short trails on the grounds. The site interprets the antebellum era, the Civil War, and Reconstruction through the people who lived and worked there. Croft State Park is the main outdoor draw in the region. The park spans roughly 7,000 wooded acres with two lakes, including 165-acre Lake Craig, plus fishing, boating, picnicking, and a playground. More than 20 miles of multi-use trails wind through the park for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, and horse stalls and a show arena support equestrian events. Within Sumter National Forest, the Broad, Enoree, and Tyger Rivers provide paddling and fishing, and forest roads open into hunting territory during fall deer and spring turkey seasons.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Union area. March through May brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and moderate crowds, while September through November delivers cooler nights, drier weather, and turning hardwoods across the Piedmont. Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Union has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer highs typically reach the upper 80s Fahrenheit, and winter lows drop into the 30s. RV renters should plan for electric hookups if traveling in July or August, since air conditioning becomes essential in the Piedmont heat. Winters are generally mild but wet. Union averages about 46 inches of rain per year, with only occasional light snow. National forest campgrounds add specific overlays: an additional camping loop at Sedalia opens for big game deer season from late August through early January and during turkey season in April, which shifts availability and use patterns at nearby forest sites during those weeks.

Expect a mix of developed hookup sites and rustic forest camping within a short drive of Union. State park sites at Croft offer packed gravel pads, water and electric hookups, restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station, with some sites accommodating RVs up to 40 feet. Twenty-five of the Croft campsites offer 50 amp service, which matters for larger rentals running two air conditioners. Forest service campgrounds are simpler. Sedalia and similar Enoree District sites are primitive, with a vault toilet, a single water spigot, and no hookups, better suited to smaller RVs and self-contained rigs. Forest access roads can be rough in spots, so drivers of larger rigs should scout routes in advance. Cell coverage varies by carrier and site. Firewood must be sourced locally to prevent pest transport into state parks.
