Camping near Camden, Tennessee
Camden sits in Benton County in West Tennessee, about eight miles east of Kentucky Lake and roughly 100 miles west of Nashville along U.S. 641 and Interstate 40. The town borders Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park, which sits on the western shore of the Kentucky Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River near Eva. The area is a hub for RV travelers combining lake recreation with access to the larger Natchez Trace State Park recreation area farther south.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to state-park RV loops and equestrian sites. Named options near Camden include Birdsong Resort and Marina Lakeside RV and Tent Campground, Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park, Nobles Road RV Park, Wrangler Horse Camp - Natchez Trace State Park, and the Paris Landing / Kentucky Lake KOA Holiday. Together they cover lakefront sites, wooded state-park loops, and highway-adjacent parks suited to overnight stops.
Renters should verify current site status before booking. The Happy Hollow and Lakefront Campgrounds at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park are closed for structural renovations, and the Cub Lake Campground 2 and Wrangler Campground at Natchez Trace State Park are also currently closed for renovations, with Pin Oak Campground being upgraded.
Things to do around Camden
Kentucky Lake is the main draw. Park activities around Nathan Bedford Forrest include paddling, disc golf, swimming, hiking, fishing, and birding, with water access from boat ramps on the lake. Anglers target crappie, largemouth bass, and catfish, and families use the day-use beach and picnic areas at Eva.
History and short hikes fill out a trip. Pilot Knob, at 656 feet, is one of the highest points in West Tennessee, and the Tennessee River Folklife Interpretive Center and Museum interprets life in the lower Tennessee Valley, including the site of the 1864 Battle of Johnsonville. More than 20 miles of hiking trails, rivers, streams, and forests surround the park.
Equestrian travelers head south to Natchez Trace State Park, where riders access over 250 miles of public-use trails from the Wrangler Camp when it is open.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. Days warm quickly in April and May, wildflowers appear in the ridge-and-hollow terrain around Pilot Knob, and lake temperatures climb. Tennessee experiences a relatively high number of tornadoes, averaging about 21 per year, and while they can occur in any month they tend to peak in the spring, so travelers should watch NWS alerts closely from March through May.
Summer is peak camping season. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, muggy days and afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Holiday weekends fill early at state parks and the KOA, and cabin rentals at Tennessee State Parks may be subject to a three-night minimum during peak times including Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reduced crowds. Winter camping is workable for self-contained rigs, though some loops and amenities close. At Natchez Trace, the Wrangler Campground normally operates year-round with some sites closing after December 1, though it is currently closed for renovations along with Cub Lake Campground 2.
How to book campgrounds near Camden
State-park sites are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks system. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, with a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite. Individual sites at Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park and Natchez Trace State Park can be booked online or by phone through the park office, subject to current renovation closures.
For Wrangler Horse Camp, campsites are booked through Tennessee State Parks, and horse stall reservations must be made through the Visitor Center at Natchez Trace at 731-968-3742. Private parks such as Birdsong Resort and Marina Lakeside RV and Tent Campground, Nobles Road RV Park, and the Paris Landing / Kentucky Lake KOA Holiday take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites and the KOA reservation platform.
Book summer weekends and holidays several weeks out. Guests who do not occupy a reserved state-park site by noon the day after the first night forfeit all fees and the site may be released.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of hookup levels. At Natchez Trace, the Wrangler Campground offers electric and water sites with 50-amp service, two bathhouses, and a dump station, with each site including a picnic table, ground grill, pedestal grill, lantern holder, and posts to picket horses (currently closed for renovations). At Nathan Bedford Forrest, Happy Hollow historically offered 37 water-and-electric sites on concrete slabs with grills and picnic tables, plus 13 primitive sites at the Lakefront Campground and a dump station, all currently closed pending structural renovations.
GPS routing can mislead drivers of larger rigs. Tennessee State Parks advises entering the park street address rather than the park name. For Nathan Bedford Forrest, use 1825 Pilot Knob Road, Eva, TN 38333, because the park name sends drivers to a back gate on a long route with no cell reception. At Natchez Trace, large rigs should use the Highway 114 entrances from I-40 exit 116 and avoid GPS routes onto county or gravel roads.
Pets are welcome at most sites on a leash, and only certified heat-treated firewood or downed wood collected inside the park is allowed for campfires.
