Camping near Clifton, Tennessee
Clifton sits on the east bank of the Tennessee River in Wayne County, in the Western Highland Rim of middle Tennessee. The area is small-town rural, with river access, farmland, and hardwood ridges shaping most of the camping options. RV renters typically use Clifton as a quiet river base for exploring the middle Tennessee River corridor and the nearby Buffalo River.
Campground choices split between state park sites and private parks. Mousetail Landing State Park, north of Clifton near Linden in Perry County, has two camping areas on the Tennessee River: the Main campground with water and electric hookups at most sites, and the Spring Creek primitive campground on the riverbank. To the southwest, near Waynesboro on the Buffalo River, Crazy Horse Recreational Park offers riverside camping alongside its canoe and kayak operation, and Green Acres RV Resort provides a private RV option with modern hookups.
Tennessee Fitness Spa, also near Waynesboro, is a wellness retreat rather than a traditional campground, but appears on regional camping searches.
Things to do around Clifton
The Tennessee River is the main draw, with boat ramps, bank fishing, and paddling on the water. The river holds bass, bream, crappie, stripe, and catfish. Both Mousetail Landing State Park campgrounds sit directly on the Tennessee River, which makes launching kayaks or small boats straightforward.
Mousetail Landing State Park has hiking, including the eight-mile Eagle Point Loop Trail, plus a day-use area on the river. To the southwest, the Buffalo River near Waynesboro is a popular float stream, and Crazy Horse Recreational Park runs canoe and kayak rentals with shuttle service.
Farther afield, the Natchez Trace Parkway is within reach for scenic driving and short walks, and the Meriwether Lewis Monument and burial site near Hohenwald sits at milepost 385.9. Shiloh National Military Park is roughly an hour southwest for a longer day trip.

Peak camping season in this part of Tennessee runs from April through October. Spring brings wildflowers, dogwood bloom, and comfortable daytime temperatures, though it is also a wet stretch, with thunderstorms common from March into May. River levels can run high on the Tennessee and Buffalo after heavy rain, and low-lying riverside sites occasionally see closures.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs regularly in the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit. Weekends fill quickly at Mousetail Landing's Main and Spring Creek loops, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Reserve early for summer holiday weekends.
Fall is the strongest shoulder season. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October and early November make it the most comfortable stretch for RV camping. Winter is mild but damp, with occasional freezes and ice storms possible; Mousetail Landing accepts reservations year-round, while some private parks may reduce services. Confirm winter hookup availability before booking.
How to book campgrounds near Clifton
Sites at the Main and Spring Creek campgrounds at Mousetail Landing State Park are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks system at tnstateparks.com or by calling 1-888-TN-PARKS. The booking window opens up to one year in advance, and popular waterfront sites for summer weekends often go quickly. A non-refundable advanced reservation fee applies per campsite, and cancellation windows determine what portion of fees is refunded.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Crazy Horse Recreational Park and Green Acres RV Resort take bookings by phone or through their websites, and both are options when state park sites are full. Tennessee Fitness Spa operates on a program-based stay model rather than nightly camping, so contact them directly.
RV renters should verify site length, hookup type (30 versus 50 amp), and dump station availability before finalizing.
What to expect on site
The Main campground at Mousetail Landing has 25 sites, with 19 offering water and electric hookups, plus a modern bathhouse, laundromat, and dump station. Sites include picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and lantern holders, with Wi-Fi available at some sites. The Spring Creek campground is primitive, with 21 sites along the Tennessee River, portable restrooms rather than a bathhouse, and fire rings, grills, and picnic tables at each site.
Private parks in the area typically provide a mix of hookup and primitive sites, with shower and restroom facilities on site. Crazy Horse Recreational Park has multiple camping sections along the Buffalo River, some quieter than others.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent. Tennessee State Parks asks campers to use heat-treated firewood or wood gathered on site rather than bringing untreated wood from home.
