Camping near Covington, Tennessee
Covington sits in Tipton County in west Tennessee, roughly 40 miles north of Memphis and a short drive east of the Mississippi River. The town anchors a rural stretch of the state where campgrounds cluster around river bluffs, hardwood bottomland, and small private parks off Highway 51. RV travelers typically use Covington as a base for exploring the Chickasaw Bluffs, Civil War history sites, and greater Memphis.
The closest public camping is at Fort Pillow State Park, a Civil War site on the Mississippi River bluffs about 40 miles north of Memphis. Private options nearby include Hidden Acres RV Park in Brownsville, Willow RV Park, and Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park to the east.
For a larger state-park campground with full amenities, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park sits along the Mississippi River less than 20 miles north of Memphis, with portions of the park situated atop the Chickasaw Bluffs, placing it within an easy drive south of Covington.
Things to do around Covington
History and river landscapes dominate the local itinerary. Tipton County history can be explored at the Tipton County Museum, Veterans Memorial and Nature Center, while the historic Covington square holds antique shops, boutiques, and local restaurants ranging from tea rooms to barbecue and country cooking.
Outdoors, Fort Pillow offers hiking on bluff trails above the Mississippi, tours of the reconstructed fortifications, and an on-site museum with Civil War artifacts. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park delivers wildlife viewing across roughly 12,500 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails through cypress swamps, and paddling on Poplar Tree Lake.
Families can add a Memphis day trip for the zoo, Beale Street, and barbecue.

West Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and winters are cool, with rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year and heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms during the warmer months. The area also sees occasional snowfall. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days and lower humidity.
Summer camping is doable but hot and buggy. Bottomland and wetland settings produce mosquitoes at dusk, so quality repellent is worth packing for warm-weather visits. River-bluff campgrounds hold shade well, though sites can feel humid in July and August.
Winter stays are possible at the major state parks, which remain open year-round. Maximum stay at Meeman-Shelby and other Tennessee State Parks is 14 days, extended to 28 days from December 1 to February 28 or 29, after which the party must vacate the park for 3 consecutive nights before returning. Expect occasional freezes and short cold snaps.
How to book campgrounds near Covington
Tennessee State Park sites are reserved through the state's central portal. Reservations at Meeman-Shelby and Fort Pillow are available through reserve.tnstateparks.com up to one year in advance, and only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed in the parks. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite.
Fort Pillow's Family Campground has fifteen sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical and water hookups, and some sites can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. A backcountry campsite and a group campsite are also bookable through the state system.
Private parks such as Hidden Acres RV Park, Willow RV Park, and Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park typically book direct by phone or through their websites.
What to expect on the ground
Sites are generally shaded and wooded. Meeman-Shelby's 49-site campground spreads across three loops with sites accommodating RVs up to about 40 feet. All sites have water and electric hookups, and several also include sewer connections; a dump station serves rigs without full hookups. Dense tree coverage provides shade but can create clearance challenges for larger rigs.
At Fort Pillow, the campground is trashcan-free and has a dump station, a dumpster, recycling bins, and a spot for gray and black water, with the dump station and dumpster located at the campground entrance. Two accessible bathhouses serve the family campground.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the bluff parks, and some carriers report weak or no signal. Plan for offline maps, bring long freshwater hoses for spread-out hookups, and pack repellent from late spring through early fall.
