Campgrounds near Gates, Tennessee
Gates sits in Lauderdale County in northwest Tennessee, within easy RV range of two Tennessee State Parks and several private RV parks. The area is rural and flat to gently rolling, with the Mississippi River bluffs to the west and the Hatchie River bottoms to the south. Most trips here center on fishing, birding, and Civil War history rather than mountain scenery.
The closest developed hookup options are private parks north and east of town. Hidden Acres RV Park in nearby Brownsville offers RV sites in a countryside setting, and Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park sits in the same corridor. Century Casino and RV Park adds a hookup option tied to a gaming property farther north.
For state-park camping, Fort Pillow State Park lies on the Chickasaw Bluffs above the Mississippi River, and the South Campground at Reelfoot Lake State Park sits about an hour north on Tennessee Highway 21-22. Both are booked through the Tennessee State Parks reservation system.
Things to do near Gates
Fishing drives much of the recreation. Reelfoot Lake, a shallow flooded cypress forest created by the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812, is known for crappie, bluegill, bass, and catfish, with a boat launch and a fish cleaning house with electricity and water near the South Campground. Bait shops and boat rentals are available within a short drive.
Fort Pillow State Park layers Civil War history over Mississippi River bluff scenery, with a reconstructed inner fort, well-preserved breastworks, and interpretive trails. Fort Pillow Lake is a 15-acre stocked lake where electric trolling motors are allowed and gas motors must follow a no-wake policy.
Birders come for bald and golden eagles, migrating waterfowl, and forest songbirds in spring and summer. Families can add short trails, a playground and pavilion at Reelfoot, and interpretive programs during the warmer months.

Spring is peak season for state-park camping in this corner of Tennessee. The South Campground at Reelfoot Lake is extremely busy during April and May, when crappie fishing peaks and the campground fills quickly on weekends. Spring also brings the region's heaviest rain and West Tennessee's peak severe-weather risk, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts and choose sites with good drainage.
Summer is hot and humid. Mosquitoes are heavy near Reelfoot's shoreline sites, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Sites with 50-amp service and shade are worth targeting for air-conditioning loads, and interpretive programs run at both parks through the warmer months.
Fall is the most comfortable stretch: cooler nights, lower humidity, and thinning crowds after the summer holidays. Winter is the off-season for most campers but a strong window for eagle watching at Reelfoot, where the park runs guided bald eagle tours during the coldest months and hosts an annual Eagle Festival.
How to book
Fort Pillow State Park and Reelfoot Lake State Park both reserve through the Tennessee State Parks system at tnstateparks.com or by phone. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite. Nightly rates vary based on date and availability, with applicable taxes and fees applied at checkout.
Check-in at Reelfoot's South Campground is 4:00 pm at the Camp Store, with checkout at 12:00 noon. Campground hosts are on site around the clock.
Private parks such as Hidden Acres RV Park, Serendipity Brownsville's Venue, Resort, and RV Park, and Century Casino and RV Park handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone rather than through the state portal.
What to expect on-site
At Fort Pillow, the Family Campground has fifteen sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electrical and water hookups, and some sites accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. Six additional sites offer 20-amp electric with nearby water stations, and nine primitive sites round out the campground. The area is trashcan-free, with a dump station, dumpster, recycling bins, and a gray and black water spot at the entrance.
Reelfoot's South Campground has 86 paved sites, all with 20/30/50-amp electric and water hookups, plus three bathhouses, laundry and dishwashing facilities, and a dump station at the entrance. Cell service can be spotty around the lake, and sites are close together.
Tennessee State Parks asks that all campfires use certified heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park. Bringing untreated firewood is discouraged to protect against invasive pests.
