Camping near Hohenwald, Tennessee
Hohenwald sits in the rolling hills of Lewis County in south-central Tennessee, roughly 80 miles southwest of Nashville and adjacent to the northern reaches of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The town, whose name comes from German for "High Forest," is the county seat and serves as a practical base for RV travellers exploring the parkway corridor, the Buffalo River watershed, and surrounding wildlife management areas.
Campground options range from free primitive sites to full-hookup resorts. Meriwether Lewis Campground, a National Park Service site at milepost 385.9 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, offers 32 no-fee sites on a first-come basis. Fall Hollow Campground on Highway 412 sits adjacent to the parkway near milepost 391 with full hookups, tent sites, and cabins. Natchez Trace RV Campground on Napier Road is a large Thousand Trails lakeside resort spread across roughly 830 wooded acres around a three-mile lake.
Smaller options include Tennessee Fitness Spa southwest of town near Natural Bridge, and Laurel Hill Trail and Camp inside the Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area in northwest Lawrence County.
Things to do around Hohenwald
The Natchez Trace Parkway is the main draw. The two-lane road is closed to commercial traffic, which makes it a relaxed drive or cycling route, with pull-offs for the Meriwether Lewis memorial and gravesite, hiking on preserved sections of the Old Trace, and waterfalls including Fall Hollow Falls and Jackson Falls.
In town, the Elephant Discovery Center connects to the Elephant Sanctuary, the largest natural-habitat sanctuary for elephants in the United States. The Lewis County Museum of Local and Natural History houses the third largest animal-trophy mount collection in North America.
Outdoor recreation is close at hand. Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area has stocked lakes for bass, bluegill, and crappie, plus gravel roads and horse trails through mixed hardwood forest. The Buffalo River and Big Swan Creek offer paddling, swimming, and fishing.

Hohenwald has a humid subtropical climate: hot, muggy summers and cool, wet winters. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 88°F, and January the coldest, with overnight lows around 31°F. The town receives roughly 50 inches of precipitation annually, spread fairly evenly, with December and March typically the wettest months and late summer, particularly August and September, the driest.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. April and May bring wildflowers along the parkway and manageable temperatures, though thunderstorms are frequent. Fall foliage in the surrounding hardwood forest generally peaks from mid-October into early November, and cool nights make campfires pleasant.
Summer is peak booking season for parkway campgrounds, and humidity, ticks, and mosquitoes are all pronounced near creeks. Winter camping is available year-round at the National Park Service and Thousand Trails sites, but hunting seasons periodically close portions of Laurel Hill WMA to non-hunters.
How to book campgrounds near Hohenwald
Reservation systems vary by campground type. Meriwether Lewis Campground on the Natchez Trace Parkway does not accept reservations through Recreation.gov or any other system; all sites are first-come, first-served and free, with no electricity, showers, or dump stations. Arrive early on holiday weekends and during fall foliage to secure a spot.
Private parks take direct bookings. Fall Hollow Campground reserves through its own website or by phone, with special deposit and cancellation terms for holidays and special events. Natchez Trace RV Campground is a Thousand Trails property; non-members can book through the Thousand Trails site, while seasonal and annual stays require a membership pass.
Tennessee Fitness Spa and Laurel Hill Trail and Camp take bookings directly through their operators. Camping inside Laurel Hill WMA is restricted to designated campgrounds, and users should check the state wildlife agency for hunt-season closures before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Hohenwald is rolling to hilly with mature hardwood forest, and cellular coverage varies by carrier and site. Roads at the National Park Service campground are paved with pull-through and back-in sites; there are no hookups, but drinking water and flush toilets are provided and there are no showers.
Full-hookup sites at Fall Hollow and Natchez Trace RV Campground offer 30 and 50 amp service. RVers heading to either property should confirm rig length and route in advance, as some approach roads are narrow. The Thousand Trails park has a mix of transient sites and long-term residents, and interior roads have been reported to have potholes in places.
Ticks, chiggers, and poison ivy are common in warm months, so insect repellent is essential. The nearest full-service town is Hohenwald itself, with a Walmart, gas, laundromat, and propane.

tnvacation.com/local/hohenwald-natchez-trace-parkway-meriwether-lewis-park-and-monumentWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Hohenwald?
Good news: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hohenwald. Tennessee does not require a special endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) for recreational vehicles driven for personal use, so a standard license covers everything from a Class B campervan to a 30-foot Class C motorhome on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified during the booking process so there is no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? You can book with confidence. RVezy applies a consistent, platform-wide cancellation policy to every reservation, so hosts do not set their own cancellation rules. The policy includes a full-refund grace period shortly after booking, with refund amounts after that based on how close to the trip start date you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps rebook you or issues a refund or travel credit, which matters in Middle Tennessee where spring storms occasionally roll through Lewis County. Pro tip: locking in your dates early gets you the best RV selection in Hohenwald and the longest window to cancel for a full refund.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hohenwald RV rental?

Once you arrive, the area is a dog lover's dream: the Natchez Trace Parkway allows leashed pets on trails and at picnic areas, the Meriwether Lewis Site has wide grassy areas perfect for a stretch, and Buffalo River sandbars are great for water-loving dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and bring a tick preventative because the wooded hollows around Hohenwald are prime tick territory in spring and summer.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Hohenwald?
Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Hohenwald, which means they'll tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at Thousand Trails Natchez Trace, Fall Hollow Campground, or the free Meriwether Lewis Campground at milepost 385.9, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. This is a game-changer if you're a first-timer or simply don't want to deal with backing a trailer down a wooded campground road. Use the Delivery filter on the listing page, then message the host to confirm the destination and any delivery fee, which often scales with mileage from their location.
nps.gov/places/meriwether-lewis-campground-milepost-385-9.htmHow far can I drive on a typical Hohenwald RV rental?
You'll have plenty of range for a great RV road trip from Hohenwald. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. That's more than enough to reach the highlights: Nashville is about 85 miles north, Memphis sits roughly 160 miles west, the Tennessee River and Pickwick Landing State Park are about 90 miles southwest, and Huntsville, Alabama is around 110 miles south. Extra miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 each, so if you're planning a big loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front and save yourself the math at drop-off.

Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it's also peak swimming season on the Buffalo River. Winter is mild, with average highs in the 50s F, making January and February surprisingly pleasant for a quiet RV camping in Hohenwald getaway. weather.gov/ohx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Hohenwald?
You'll be in great shape. Hohenwald is one of the easiest places in Tennessee to learn the ropes because traffic is light, US 412 and TN-20 are wide rural highways, and the iconic Natchez Trace Parkway has a 50 mph speed limit with no commercial trucks allowed, making it incredibly relaxed for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, leveling, water, and dump procedures, and you can message them mid-trip with questions. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet for your first Hohenwald trip. They handle just like an oversized van and fit every local campground site easily.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Your host is also your first line of support for quirks specific to that RV, and most respond within minutes via the in-app messenger. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the host's number to your phone so any small issue gets resolved fast.

Hohenwald is a brilliant launchpad for an RV road trip from Hohenwald in any direction. Head north 85 miles to Nashville for honky-tonks and Centennial Park, southwest 90 miles to Pickwick Landing State Park on the Tennessee River, southeast 110 miles to Huntsville, Alabama and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, or simply drive the full 100-mile Tennessee section of the Natchez Trace Parkway south to the Alabama border. Cross-state travel within the US is welcome on RVezy rentals (just confirm any specific routes with your host), but travel into Mexico is not permitted because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: build in a stop at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills, about 45 minutes northwest.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/things2do.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how should I budget for gas?
Plan generously for fuel and you'll never be surprised. Class A motorhomes in the Hohenwald area typically get 7 to 10 mpg, Class C motorhomes 9 to 12 mpg, campervans 15 to 20 mpg, and gas-powered tow vehicles pulling a travel trailer around 10 to 13 mpg. Tennessee gas prices tend to run below the national average, and Hohenwald has multiple stations along US 412 (Murphy USA at Walmart, Jug's One Stop, and a Shell on East Main) that easily accommodate big rigs. Pro tip: fill up in town before you hit the Natchez Trace Parkway, because there are no gas stations on the Parkway itself for the entire 100-mile Tennessee stretch.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hohenwald?
For most of the year, you can book campgrounds near Hohenwald just a week or two ahead, but a few sweet spots fill faster. Reserve Thousand Trails Natchez Trace and Fall Hollow Campground 4 to 6 weeks out for spring and fall weekends, and aim for 2 to 3 months ahead for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. The free Meriwether Lewis Campground at milepost 385.9 is first-come, first-served only, so plan to arrive by early Friday afternoon. For state parks and other NPS sites, use Recreation.gov, which opens reservations 6 months in advance. Pro tip: weekday arrivals almost always have availability, even during peak fall foliage.

Pickup is typically at the host's home or a nearby meeting spot, with a 45 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing for free nightly miles and per-mile overage fees. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking for the smoothest start.
nps.gov/natr/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Hohenwald is handled securely through the RVezy platform, never in cash to the host. You pay your trip total at booking with a credit or debit card, and funds are released to your host after pickup, which protects both sides. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card a few days before the trip starts, then released after drop-off assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Pro tip: walk around the RV with your host at pickup and drop-off and take time-stamped photos and video inside and out so the deposit return is smooth.
