Camping near Huntingdon, Tennessee
Huntingdon sits in Carroll County in West Tennessee, roughly midway between Jackson and the Tennessee River. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Carroll County Recreation Lake, which is approximately 1,000 acres and the largest man-made lake in West Tennessee, with over 22 miles of shoreline and two swimming areas complete with beaches. Interstate 40 runs about twenty minutes south, connecting campers to Natchez Trace State Park and, further east, the Kentucky Lake shoreline.
Most overnight options in the area fall into three categories: a small campground at the county lake, private RV parks along the I-40 corridor, and the large state park system to the south. Natchez Trace State Park sits within a larger 48,000-acre landscape that includes a state forest and wildlife management area, giving the region its deepest concentration of RV sites, cabins, and trails.
Campers using Huntingdon typically split their days between water time on the lakes, trail time in the state park, and short drives to small-town stops in Carroll and Benton counties. The mix works well for families who want lake swimming without booking far from the interstate.
Things to do near Huntingdon
Water recreation anchors most trips. Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake is designed for fishing and water-sports, with 600 acres dedicated to water sports and 400 acres dedicated to fishing, and the area is open 30 minutes before sunrise to 20 minutes after sunset, with beaches open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A lake use permit is required for fishing, boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, and other water sports.
At Natchez Trace State Park, the park offers a wooded setting with multiple lakes and opportunities for hiking, paddling, fishing, boating, and horseback riding. Wrangler Camp connects riders to over 250 miles of public use trails, which also serve hikers and cyclists outside horse-use windows. Park amenities include a softball field, archery range, swim beach, equestrian center, wrangler campground, firing range, recreation lodge, picnic areas, pavilion areas, museum, and boat ramp.
For a longer day trip, campers head east to Kentucky Lake for pontoon rentals, freshwater pearl tours, and marina restaurants.

Spring and fall are the strongest camping windows. Daytime highs sit in the 60s and 70s, humidity is manageable, and state park sites see steady but not overwhelming demand. Wildflowers peak in April, and fall color in the oak-hickory forest around Natchez Trace typically arrives in late October and early November.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also when the lakes come alive. The concession stand at the county lake runs from late May until Labor Day, which frames the local swim season. Holiday weekends fill fastest at both the county lake and Pin Oak, so booking early matters.
Winter camping is quieter and workable for cold-tolerant travelers, but ongoing construction affects the state park side of the area. The Natchez Trace State Park Cub Lake Campground 2 and Wrangler Campground are currently closed for renovations, and Pin Oak Campground is being upgraded. The Lodge at Natchez Trace and its restaurant are also undergoing a rebuild with an anticipated reopening in spring 2028, and during construction the pool is unavailable. Campers should check the park website for current status before planning a trip.
How to book campgrounds near Huntingdon
State park sites at Pin Oak and Wrangler Horse Camp are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks system. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, with a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite that supports the reservation system. Horse stall reservations must be made through the Visitor Center at Natchez Trace at 731-968-3742. Note that the Cub Lake Campground 2 and Wrangler Campground are currently closed for renovations, so availability is limited.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground takes reservations by phone and online. At Birdsong Resort and Marina Lakeside RV and Tent Campground, campers contact the reservation specialist at (731) 584-7880 to reserve a pad. Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreation Lake operates a smaller lakeside campground reserved through the county lake office.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the area range from basic county-run pads to full-hookup private parks. Pin Oak offers 77 full hookup sites, and reservations are recommended in advance, especially during peak seasons. The Pin Oak campground has 2 bathhouses with 50-amp electric, sewer, and water hookups, sits on the shore of Pin Oak Lake, and can accommodate RVs.
At Birdsong, the setup is similar on Kentucky Lake: over 50 RV pads, most concrete and some pull-through, overlooking the river, with 20/30/50 amp electrical, water, and some sewer.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than open plains. Cell service is generally reliable near I-40 and thins inside the park; there is very limited, if any, cell service in the Pin Oak campground area.
Pet rules vary. Birdsong requires pets to remain in the RV, not tied outside, and to be walked on leash in the designated pet walking area. Check each campground's specific policy before arrival.
