Campgrounds and RV parks near Mason, TN

Fort Pillow State Park anchors the area's outdoor activities. The park is designated as a Wildlife Observation Area by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, with interpretive signs identifying species and habitat, and it provides sanctuary for deer, turkey, and a range of birds popular with birders. Electric trolling motors are allowed on the 15-acre Fort Pillow Lake, gas motors must adhere to a No Wake policy, and the lake is stocked with bass, bream, and crappie. A Tennessee fishing license is required. Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park offers hiking, cycling, and paddling along the Mississippi River bluffs. Day trips into Memphis put Beale Street, the National Civil Rights Museum, the Memphis Zoo, and Graceland within a short drive. Closer to home, the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge is a draw for anglers, birders, and paddlers.

West Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate with high annual precipitation, hot summers, and cold winters that show strong seasonal differences. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating birds along the Mississippi flyway, and warming river temperatures, but it also brings the region's peak severe-weather season, with thunderstorms and tornado risk running highest from March through May. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the low 90s and frequent late-day thunderstorms. Shaded state-park sites near the river bluffs tend to feel cooler than open private lots. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms can occur during the warmer months. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable dry stretches through October. Winter is generally mild by national standards but includes cold snaps, occasional ice, and rare snowfall, and some private parks reduce services during the off-season.

State park campgrounds in the area lean rustic. At Fort Pillow, the Family Campground offers hookups on the north side, with nine primitive sites on the south side and a backcountry site along the Blue Chickasaw Bluff Trail. The campground is trashcan-free and has a dump station, a dumpster, recycling bins, and a spot for gray and black water, with the dump station and dumpster conveniently located at the entrance. The park sells firewood, and campers may also use dead wood that has fallen near their campsite. Private parks near Mason typically offer full hookups, level pads, and Wi-Fi, with amenities varying by property. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate corridors but can weaken inside the river-bluff parks. Wildlife is common: expect deer, wild turkey, raccoons, and songbirds, along with mosquitoes and ticks in the warmer months. Secure food and trash, and pack insect repellent from late spring through early fall.
