Camping near Waynesboro, Tennessee
Waynesboro sits in Wayne County in southwest middle Tennessee, along Highway 64 between the Tennessee River and the Natchez Trace Parkway. The area is rural and wooded, with Shoal Creek, the Buffalo River, and the Little Buffalo River cutting through hardwood ridges. It works well as a low-density base for RV travelers who want river access, hiking, and a short drive to the Natchez Trace.
Campgrounds around Waynesboro range from full-hookup private parks to primitive sites on public land. Crazy Horse Recreational Park offers RV-friendly sites near the water, while Natchez Trace RV Campground provides a hookup base close to the Parkway corridor. Laurel Hill Trail and Camp is a private horse-friendly campground adjoining Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area, and Shoal Creek Canoe Run in Iron City combines primitive camping with paddling access. Tennessee Fitness Spa on Highway 99 has historically offered on-property lodging tied to its wellness program; travelers should confirm current status and any RV accommodations directly with the property before routing there.
Things to do around Waynesboro
Paddling is the headline activity. Shoal Creek Canoe Run rents canoes, kayaks, and tubes for float trips on a mostly Class I stretch of Shoal Creek, with primitive camping behind the store. The Buffalo River, one of Tennessee's longest unimpounded rivers, is another popular float within a short drive.
Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area covers roughly 15,000 acres of oak-hickory forest with about 30 miles of chert gravel roads and 30 miles of horse trails, plus stocked bass, crappie, and catfish fishing at Laurel Hill Lake and VFW Lake. The Natchez Trace Parkway corridor is close by for scenic driving, cycling, and historic stops, including the Meriwether Lewis site near Hohenwald. Families can also use Waynesboro City Park as a low-key day stop.

December - February
48° / 32°F 125 mmCool and wet; freezing January nights; quietest season
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers, and higher creek flow that is good for paddling, though March is typically the wettest month and can affect road conditions on the way to primitive sites. Mid-September through October delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and reliable float conditions, though popular sites book earlier as fall color arrives.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging near 90 degrees and heat indices that make shaded, water-adjacent sites valuable. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Wayne County sits in one of the wetter zones of middle Tennessee, with normal annual precipitation between 55 and 60 inches, so plan for rain across every season.
Winter camping is quiet but wet. Many private amenities scale back, and Laurel Hill WMA has periodic closures tied to big-game hunts. Freezing nights are regular in January, so RVs should be winter-ready if traveling December through February.
How to book a site near Waynesboro
Private parks in the Waynesboro area typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Crazy Horse Recreational Park, Natchez Trace RV Campground, Laurel Hill Trail and Camp, and Tennessee Fitness Spa are best contacted directly, especially for holiday weekends and fall color weeks. Laurel Hill Trail and Camp offers water and electric hookups and is open year round, but calls ahead when big-game hunts are underway on the adjoining WMA.
Public land rules differ. On Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area itself, camping is only allowed in designated camping areas and no backcountry camping is permitted, with stays limited to three weeks. Tennessee State Parks farther afield use the official Tennessee State Parks reservation system and are worth checking if local sites are full.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, low-service setting. Most campgrounds sit 15 to 30 minutes from full grocery shopping, with Lawrenceburg being the closest larger town for supplies. Stock up before arriving, especially for primitive stays.
Cell service is inconsistent across the area, and several campgrounds along the Natchez Trace corridor report weak or no signal on major carriers. Download maps offline and plan communication before leaving pavement. Sites range from full hookups at private RV parks to tent-only primitive pads with picnic tables and fire rings but limited restrooms.
Wildlife is active: expect deer, wild turkeys, and, in warmer months, snakes including cottonmouths and copperheads. Keep food secured and check sites before setting up in tall grass.

September through early November is arguably even better: crisp mornings, fall color peaking in mid-to-late October, and fewer bugs. Summers (June through August) are hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to 90s, so look for RVs with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild but can dip into the 20s overnight. Pro tip: time your trip for mid-October to catch peak foliage on the Natchez Trace Parkway, it's one of the most underrated leaf-peeping drives in the South.

The Parkway even has a 50 mph speed limit and no commercial trucks, which makes it perfect for new RVers. Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. Tennessee gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. Most travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves (your tow vehicle does), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg. For a 300-mile loop from Waynesboro to Nashville and back in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up in Waynesboro or Lawrenceburg before heading onto the Natchez Trace, there are no gas stations on the Parkway itself, and the nearest exits can be 20 or more miles apart.

Private parks like Green Valley RV Park and Natchez Trace RV Park typically take reservations 6-9 months out. For National Park Service sites along the Natchez Trace, use recreation.gov. Pro tip: if you're booking last-minute, weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) almost always have openings, and free first-come sites like Meriwether Lewis Campground are great backups.
