Campgrounds and RV parks near Albany, TX

Albany sits in Shackelford County in north central Texas, about 35 miles northeast of Abilene at roughly 1,440 feet elevation. The Clear Fork of the Brazos River winds through the surrounding ranch country, and the town serves as a small county seat with a compact grid of services useful for restocking an RV before heading out. The closest state campground is Fort Griffin State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property about 15 miles north on US 283 with 33 sites along the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. Private RV parks fill in the gaps for travelers who prefer full hookups and pull-through access, including Bridgeview RV Park and Village Inn Motel and RV Park to the east near Breckenridge, plus Dakota Lone Star RV Park and Buck Creek RV Park within reach for longer stays. The mix works well for travelers who want one night of history and stargazing at Fort Griffin followed by a resupply stop at a serviced private park before continuing across Texas.

Fort Griffin State Historic Site is reserved through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system, either online at the TPWD website or by phone through the state reservation line. Camping reservations can be made up to five months in advance on a rolling window, which is shorter than many other state systems. Reservations hold a site type, such as full hookup, water and electric, or tent, rather than a specific numbered pad, so early arrival helps at check-in. A day-use entry fee applies on top of the campsite fee. Private parks near Albany, including Bridgeview RV Park, Village Inn Motel and RV Park, Dakota Lone Star RV Park, and Buck Creek RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekends around the Fort Griffin Fandangle in June and holiday weekends fill first, so book several weeks out.
