Campgrounds near Alton, Texas
Alton sits in Hidalgo County in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, minutes west of McAllen and just north of Mission. The area is a well-known winter destination for RV travelers, and most of the closest campgrounds sit along the Mission and McAllen corridor rather than in Alton proper. Nearby Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is located just south of Mission in Hidalgo County, and the closest private RV options include Canyon Lake RV Resort Of Mission, Eldorado Acres RV Park, J-Five RV Park, Bentsen Palm RV Park, and Bluebonnet RV Resort.
Many of the parks are long-stay, snowbird-oriented communities with paved pads, full hookups, clubhouses, and organized winter activities. Some, such as Bentsen Palm RV Park, are age-restricted 55+ communities, so families traveling with kids should confirm rules before booking.
For a public-land experience, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is a 797-acre nature sanctuary that serves as headquarters for the World Birding Center. The park offers primitive walk-in campsites, but no longer allows RV camping inside the park boundaries since becoming the World Birding Center headquarters in 2004, so most RV travelers combine a private park stay in Mission or McAllen with day trips into Bentsen and other Valley birding sites.
Things to do near Alton
The Rio Grande Valley is one of the top birdwatching regions in North America, and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is the anchor site. The park encourages exploration by foot, bike, or tram to protect its natural beauty, so plan to leave the RV at the entrance and explore trails on foot or by bike. Visitors can expect to see species such as green jays, Altamira orioles, plain chachalacas, and many more, and the park also features butterfly gardens since the area is a hotspot for butterfly migrations and diversity. The National Butterfly Center and additional World Birding Center sites add more wildlife stops within a short drive.
Beyond wildlife, day trips include the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse Museum, La Lomita Mission, Mission Historical Museum, and the shops and restaurants of McAllen. South Padre Island beaches are about a two-hour drive east for a coastal day out. Many local RV parks run community amenities such as pools, shuffleboard, and organized events during the winter season.

March - May
88° / 66°F 45 mmWarming fast; migrant birding peaks mid-April to early May.
- summer
June - August
97° / 75°F 60 mmHot, humid; plan outdoor time early and run AC midday.

84° / 64°F 70 mmWettest stretch; watch Atlantic hurricane forecasts.
- winter
December - February
75° / 54°F 25 mmMild and dry; peak Winter Texan and birding season.
The Valley has a two-track season. From roughly November through March, mild temperatures and peak birding draw Winter Texans from northern states and Canada, and RV parks in Mission and McAllen fill up for multi-month stays. Reservations several months out are the norm.
Spring brings a second birding peak in April and early May, when neotropical migrants pass through alongside resident species. The best time to visit for bird-watching is in the spring or fall when migratory species pass through the area. Weather is warm and comfortable early in spring, then rapidly heats up.
Summer months can be intensely hot, making outdoor activities less comfortable, so plan to visit during the busy season to witness the spectacular hawk migration. Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs often near or above the upper 90s and a wetter pattern that peaks in September. The highest amount of precipitation occurs during the month of September, and fall also overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season, so travelers should watch tropical forecasts before booking short-notice trips.
How to book near Alton
For private parks such as Canyon Lake RV Resort Of Mission, Eldorado Acres RV Park, J-Five RV Park, Bentsen Palm RV Park, and Bluebonnet RV Resort, book directly with the park by phone or through their websites. Winter Texan sites are typically reserved months, sometimes a year, in advance for stays running December through March, so book as early as possible if targeting that window.
For Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, reservations can be made online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's reservation system, and campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 5 months in advance. The park store closes at 4:30pm, and the last park shuttle is at 12:00pm; if arriving after 12:00pm, visitors will need to walk or bicycle into the park with camping equipment.
What to expect near Alton
Expect flat terrain, palm trees, subtropical vegetation, and a strong bilingual, cross-border character in food, signage, and radio. Roads are generally RV-friendly, with easy access from Expressway 83 through McAllen and Mission to the campground corridors south of the highway.
Winter parks in this area function as small communities, with regular potlucks, card games, and clubhouse activities. Many of the closest RV resorts are 55+ or heavily snowbird-oriented, so families with young children should confirm age policies and amenity access when booking.
Inside Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, RVs stay at the parking area and visitors enter on foot, bike, or the tram. The distance to the walk-in primitive camping area is 3/4 mile to site from the parking lot, so this is a day-use destination for most RV renters rather than a hookup base.

On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A coaches run $250 to $400 per night. Weekly bookings often unlock automatic host discounts of 10 to 25 percent, which is the easiest way to lower your nightly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alton,TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Alton, TX?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Alton. Texas does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for any motorhome or trailer rented on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, fifth wheels, and travel trailers. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most first-time renters in the Rio Grande Valley are surprised how straightforward it is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Alton protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Alton, TX booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pick up the keys. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV, giving you real financial peace of mind without arranging coverage yourself. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (hosts don't pick it for you), so you control how much coverage you want. With South Texas thunderstorms occasionally rolling through in spring, that built-in protection is one less thing to think about on your Alton RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Alton RV trip plans change?
Plans change, and RVezy gets that. Every booking falls under an RVezy-set cancellation policy (not a host-set one), and there's a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. You won't see different policies on different Alton listings because the cancellation policy is standardized across the platform and isn't displayed in individual listings. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. If you're unsure, RVezy support can walk you through your options before you book or anytime after.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Alton, TX?
Pets are welcome on plenty of Alton RV trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to narrow the list to hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats), then message the host to confirm size or breed details. A pet-friendly RV rental in Alton, TX pairs perfectly with local outdoor spots: leashed dogs are welcome on the trails at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in nearby Mission, at Edinburg Scenic Wetlands, and along the hike-and-bike paths in Anzalduas County Park. Bring a portable shade canopy and extra water bowls. South Texas heat is intense for pups, even in cooler winter months when the sun is still strong by midday.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/pets-in-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Alton?
Yes, RV delivery in Alton is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers and families. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to your campsite at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort, Mission Bell RV Resort, or even your driveway in Alton, McAllen, or Mission. They'll level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through everything from the awning to the AC. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see hosts who service your area. Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip distance, so booking a rig closer to Alton keeps that cost down.

tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bentsen-rio-grande-valleyWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Alton, TX?

weather.gov/bro/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Alton?
You'll be more than okay, first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, slide-outs, generator use, tanks, and the propane system, and they stay reachable by message throughout your trip. Alton is flat, with wide roads on FM 676 and Mile 5 Road, making it one of the easier spots in Texas to get comfortable behind the wheel. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Alton RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing across Texas. If something happens on US-83 between Alton and Mission, on a rural road heading toward Roma, or anywhere on your route, one phone call gets help dispatched. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alton RV rental into Mexico or up to other states?
Trips into Mexico are not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection plan and roadside assistance don't extend across the border, even though Reynosa is right across the river. Inside the US, you have freedom to roam, you can take your Alton, TX rental to South Padre Island, Big Bend, Austin, San Antonio, or up to Oklahoma if the host's mileage policy supports it. Always confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking by messaging them through the listing. Popular RV road trip from Alton routes include the Texas Gulf Coast loop and the Hill Country wineries circuit through Fredericksburg.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Alton?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's predictable. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches 6 to 10, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg combined). Gas prices in the Rio Grande Valley tend to run below the Texas state average, with stations along Business 83 in Alton and Mission often the cheapest in the region. For a typical 500-mile loop to South Padre Island and back in a Class C, expect roughly $150 to $220 in fuel. Fill up in Alton or Edinburg before heading west, since prices climb noticeably once you pass Laredo.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Alton?
For peak Winter Texan season (December through February), book your campground 3 to 6 months ahead. The large parks like Bentsen Palm Village and Mission Bell RV Resort fill up with returning snowbirds. State park sites at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park open for reservations 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and weekends in cool months go fast. Spring and fall trips usually only need 2 to 4 weeks of lead time, and summer is the most relaxed, you can often book within a week. Reserve your RV on RVezy first, then lock in your campground to avoid scheduling headaches.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Alton, TX?
Driving an RV around Alton is one of the easier setups in Texas. The terrain is flat, roads like US-83, FM 676, and Trosper Road have wide lanes, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Watch for two things: sudden afternoon thunderstorms from May through October that can drop heavy rain quickly, and strong crosswinds on the open stretches between Alton and La Joya, which can push taller Class A rigs. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, so check the National Weather Service Brownsville forecast before any summer trip. Otherwise, South Texas drivers are laid-back and the RV-friendly road network is forgiving.
weather.gov/bro/What amenities do campgrounds near Alton typically offer?
Most RV parks within 20 minutes of Alton are full-service resorts catering to Winter Texans, so expect generous amenities. Bentsen Palm Village, Mission Bell, and Chimney Park typically offer 30/50 amp electric, water and sewer hookups at the site, free Wi-Fi, laundry, heated pools, clubhouses, and dog parks. Dump stations are available at all major RV resorts in the area. Potable water fills are easy at any full-hookup site. If you're staying somewhere primitive like Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, plan to fill water and dump at a resort before or after, since state park sites are walk-in only.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/bentsen-rio-grande-valleyWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Alton, TX?
More comfort than most first-timers expect. A typical motorhome rental in Alton sleeps 4 to 8 people and comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a private bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with roof-mounted AC, and a propane furnace for occasional January cold snaps. Most rigs include a TV, basic kitchenware, linens (often as an optional add-on), and seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class A and Class C models often have generators for boondocking, exterior speakers, and outdoor kitchens. Cellular coverage can be spotty in the Rio Grande Valley brushlands, so a mobile hotspot is smart if you need to work. Filter by sleeps count on RVezy to match your group size.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alton,TexasWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Alton RV rental?
Alton hosts offer a helpful menu of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), portable grills, generators, camp chairs, bike racks, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is typically at the host's address in Alton, Mission, McAllen, or Edinburg, with most offering a 60 to 90 minute orientation. Delivery is widely available and especially handy if you're flying into McAllen International Airport (MFE), which is roughly 10 miles east. Mileage policies vary: the most common is 100 free miles per night, with overage at $0.25 to $0.45 per mile, though some hosts advertise unlimited mileage. Always read the listing's policy section before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alton,TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Alton?
Payment is fully handled through RVezy, you'll never pay the host directly in cash. When you book your RV rental in Alton, TX, your card is charged for the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons through the secure platform. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, separate from the booking payment itself. As long as the RV is returned on time, clean, and undamaged, the hold is released after your trip ends. Do a quick walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone and makes any deposit questions easy to resolve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the South Texas heat on a summer Alton RV trip?
With a little planning, summer can absolutely work. Most Alton RV rentals come with roof-mounted AC that handles even 100-degree afternoons, but the AC needs a 30 or 50 amp shore power connection to run continuously, so book a full-hookup site. Drive in the early morning or evening to reduce engine strain and crosswind fatigue, and park with the RV's long side facing north when possible to keep the living area shaded. Hydration is non-negotiable, every campground store in the Rio Grande Valley sells large water jugs. Head to South Padre Island or the Gulf Coast for a cooler sea breeze, it's typically several degrees cooler than inland Alton.
