Campgrounds and RV parks near Skidmore, TX

Lake Corpus Christi State Park is the anchor attraction. The 18,256-acre lake yields largemouth and white bass, crappie, blue, channel and flathead catfish, and bluegill and redear sunfish, and the park has two lighted fishing piers, two boat ramps, and two fish cleaning shelters. Swimming, paddling, fishing, boating, and water skiing are all permitted, with no lifeguards on duty, and alligators live in the park. Birding is a major draw. The park has identified more than 200 bird species and is an important stopover for Neotropical migrants. Land activities include camping, hiking, biking, geocaching, and nature watching. Day trips reach Corpus Christi, the USS Lexington, the Texas State Aquarium, and Padre Island National Seashore, which protects roughly 130,000 acres of barrier island. Rob and Bessie Welder Park adds a public golf course plus baseball, basketball, and soccer facilities.

South Texas has a long warm season. Summers are hot and humid, with August the warmest month and average highs near 95°F. The August heat index has been calculated at well over 100°F, so RVers should plan on running air conditioning and picking shaded sites where possible. Water activities on Lake Corpus Christi peak from March through September. Spring is the strongest window overall. Daytime highs run from the mid-60s to the mid-80s, wildflowers bloom, and migratory birds move through the area, joining resident species for peak wildlife activity. Weekend sites at the state park fill early during spring break and holiday weekends. Fall brings the wettest stretch of the year. September is the peak rainfall month, with rain falling on around 17 days and accumulating over two inches, and Gulf tropical systems can bring heavy rain or wind through November. Winter is mild and generally dry, with January the coldest month, averaging a high near 63°F and a low near 48°F. Winter Texans occupy many long-stay sites at private parks.

Expect flat brush-country terrain, mesquite and live oak cover, and warm, humid air for most of the year. Cell service is generally reliable along US 181 and I-37, and grocery and fuel stops are easy to reach in Beeville, Mathis, and Sinton. RVers should carry insect repellent year-round and plan for strong sun and limited natural shade at many sites. Wildlife is part of the experience. Deer and raccoons are common around campgrounds, and alligators live in the park at Lake Corpus Christi, so keep pets leashed and food secured. Lake levels on Lake Corpus Christi have fluctuated in recent dry stretches, and the boat ramps at the state park are not always open due to water levels, so shoreline and launch access from some private parks may also be reduced. Check current conditions before booking if lake access is central to the trip.
